Power Play: Port Adelaide must outbid the Crows for super Saint Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera

If St Kilda star Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera really is coming home to SA, the Power can’t let history repeat, writes Andrew Capel.

Mentions crows 8 year offer

If St Kilda playmaker Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera is serious about wanting to return home to South Australia at the end of the season, the Power must win the bidding war against its arch-rival Adelaide for the silky-smooth defender. It lost the fight for now Crows captain Jordan Dawson when he left Sydney four years ago to return to SA and it can’t afford to be outpointed in this arm-wrestle.

The Crows, who, if the Round 1 results are anything to go by, appear closer to their next premiership than Port, have reportedly tabled a “massive offer’’ to sign Wanganeen-Milera.
The best thing we can do is have a successful year & Port slide, making us a more attractive destination.

I would think we have a decent chance. All media has said Power are “favourites” due to his relationship with JHF and Burgoyne and being Wanganeen nephew IIRC

Unless Bergman leaves (small chance Butters) we also have better draft collateral and are MUCH closer to a flag. Power have missed their chance with Gray, Boak and elite midfield and other A grade talent 2020-2024. They are coming down the other side now and need a decent rebuild - just at the time Tassie will be taking the most elite youngsters

If NWM wants good money and long term contract back home (can’t imagine Saints would be offering THAT much more - 200k ish/year? either) then Crows are the team with a much stronger short/medium/long term outlook IMO. Bigger crowds, more supporters, money, sponsors etc.

I would like to believe we are a real shot if he leaves and glad we have at least one more premium player up our salary cap

Money won't be the deciding factor as he will get great money wherever he chooses.

Yes we have better picks than Port, but again this is not a deciding factor as Port would get the deal done if he selected them. They always do.

So it comes down where does he want to play his football. Hopefully we are on the way up & Port are sliding to make us more attractive.

Or Bergman

Can’t see Butters leaving one year before FA. It’s not in his interests to maximise $$ and club of choice
Yeah Butters won’t dip for another year, if at all

Bergman will leave. Then it’s a matter of actually getting NWM across the line, they’ll have the pick capital (just)

I’d still love to have him for us, though, the godfather offer is a good start

Port can’t trade a future first can they?

If that’s the case, there’s no way port can satisfy St Kilda with Bergman or the pick that they’d get for him.
Think they can, given they used a first last year

Unless the rule is two firsts within four years? I thought it was one first

Yeah agree re $$$$. Will be a well of young man at 35

But our footy outlook is definitely looking better - hopefully important if he is leaving a smaller underperforming team like the Saints - and IMO you can’t discount the ability to get the deal done. We do have a clear advantage here as Power have blown up first rounders on Luko and Ratugolea. Not sure Power can get the deal done with out trading out a best 5 player (which then makes the deal more marginal)

Ratugolea wasn't a 1st rounder was he? Thought was a 2nd?

Edit pick 25 & junk picks.

Still overs.

Port took a first round pick in 2024.
They have no 2025 1st rd pick currently. Only 2026 and 2027 future picks.
They can't trade 2026 pick currently as only Berry would count for the 4 yr period 2023 to 2026. Sinn(2021) and JHF2022) picks will no longer be relevant.
2027 future pick won't have as much currency 'cos of Tassie team entry.
So in short if they want to trade a big fish in this year they need to trade a big fish out.

I think they would get clearance to trade 2026 pick. Given they have a first rounder in 21,22,24

Also I assume now that clubs can trade 2 years into the future that rule will change a bit?

21 and 22 aren't within the necessary period which would be 23 to 26, there has been no change to the 2 in 4 year rule announced

The AFL is open to letting clubs exceed that on a per club basis.
With JHF they counted trading out their first for him as a first round selection, due to his age. If the players they are trading for are young then they will overlook it.

The JHF scenario was exceptional as he was still a teenager, don't hold your breath waiting for that situation to be repeated. The initial contracts for early selections was increased from 2 years to 3 specifically to reduce likelihood of a repeat.

The AFL are willing to bend their own rules whenever it suits them so they can manipulate outcomes?

That doesn't sound like the AFL at all!
