News 2024 St.Kilda Media Thread

On the couch just put the spotlight on the Saints tonight. I am usually over sensitive to anti St Kilda talk. And they weren’t really anti. Just raising some good points I thought.

The bit about supporting each other and celebrating their successes onfield was fair observation. Something that I hadn’t noticed. They noted we didn’t have the cattle and don’t have success getting free agents. So we fight from a difficult position. Partly our fault, but partly not.

Not going to go through it, but watch it if you can. And despite all our shortcomings and shortfalls, they did point out we only lost by 2 points. Against a high calibre midfield. Which we do not have. Some things are good. But we are a fair way back for the time being.
Yep.

Funny thing is for those that tell us "double and triple teamed" most of those he had metres separation and didn't demand the ball. If it is the shoulder reco's then bloody tell us as I'm sure the AFL inside world knows. Oh but a player might attack his shoulders. Oh ya not heard of tik tok great grandpa Louie? Everyone knows everything about everyone in 2024. They all know so Tell Us All.

On one of the shows it was said the club needs to sit with him and ask him what he wants to be. Do you think we need to ask Pou? None of us doubt that.

I was with a group of 23 year old peers. Young Saints fans. Men trying as hard as they can in the current times to make a living. To say they weren't impressed with the body language and intenstity is an understatement.

The club has probably seen this coming and prepared for it internally - the house always wins as they say in casinos - and if they haven't they deserve to cop it anyway.

All we can do is prepare for it too and support our club through the storm. They are fighting to survive as ever, we need to be battle hard mentally and stick together.

Remember: ALL the media work, directly or indirectly, for the institution Bassat and Lyon are currently criticising. That includes most SM pundits with media connections like Cherny etc. "Liquor license" Morris is like the weird Smeegle bloke from Lord of the Rings, there's no-one he won't knife to get his precious media status back after he destroyed it.
Tommy - Old Melbourne Grammarian- I’ll leave it at that

The most interesting thing about St.Kilda at the moment is the war its waging against AFL inequalities.
Our team reflects those blatant inequalities.
The proof is there.
If the media bitches want to sharpen their nails with clickity clicks, then I hope the Saints management come out swinging f*#kin' chainsaws come Wednesday/ Thursday's Preview day.
Bring it on.

It's 100% time to fix the ****ed system so that clubs can't double dip and use trash picks for first round players but we are ****ed because we did dumb shit for 20 years worth of drafts and trades.

I understand why there isn't sympathy for us but just as a totally separate issue they need to fix the inequity that the draft has started to install.

They stopped the priority picks to stop tanking but this is every bit as destructive as the bottom few teams putting mature players into surgery early.

Caro just whacked Bassett yet again. She can’t help herself. Debate the issue you old hag. What is he saying that isn’t 100% accurate.
As for Walsh saying we have forgotten about Mitch and Windy. He must have been pissed and forgot every club had the opportunity to take either of them. Just like Hawthorn took McKenzie off us.
Ugle Hagan on the other hand🙄

It's both. You can't look at our decisions without context.

I absolutely agree with this strategy. The AFL will set their dogs on us but we should scream louder each time. If they get properly vindictive and screw us with fixturing or FA compo then we scream louder again and say "see l told you all so". Then we scream louder again.

Just watched that, really insightful actually and great vision.

One of Ross' strengths was meant to be his ability to set a high performance, strong culture that gets the best out of every player. That's what he was renowned for in his first stint, getting buy in and making role players play well.

It's not happening this time around and he seems different, the game is different.

Vision you speak of was Butler busting a gut in the forward line 2 v 1 to force a stoppage. King was right next to him and instead of helping Butler up, maybe giving him a pat on the back like you see top teams do, he just turned around and walked/jogged away. Maybe doesn't sound like much, but it is a big deal and is a symptom of the culture.

Another was King himself crashing a pack that led to a Saints goal and no Saints player went over to him to congratulate the effort. King himself barely moved and didn't run over to the goal scorer to celebrate. A lot of the players, especially King, just seem despondent and don't really have their head in the game.

The fact we didn't ask for compo after losing Paddy, Hugh, Robbo, Koby in 18 months was poor by us. There was another IIRC.

Dempster.

Well done highlighting that. I couldn’t bring myself to describe it. Maybe they were isolated incidents. But it was quite stark. Ross talks about our character quite a bit. And we do fight games out. Maybe there is a disconnect between the younger and older guys. And 14 players from other clubs.

Perhaps starting again (for the umpteenth time) with the Windy/Mitch group as a central point might bring that inner spirit. They seem to be very together. Draft our own guys and get them growing together. Worked with the 2000-2010 group.

Absolutely fair comment - but let’s see how that plays out in the next few weeks and the off season - maybe cuddly Ross is coming to an end - who knows

They have a good point with King and Butler and its pretty evident of him being inside his own head and not enjoying football at the moment but the last point is an absolute joke and all three of them should know better. Nearly every single player in the forward half is rushing in to congratulate Hill on kicking a great goal. King was good in that he managed to bring the ball to ground but that kind of action is lost in amongst the rest of the play extremely easily and hardly indicative of the culture. You literally just do not get enough time to congratulate everyone involved post goal. Hell, half the time when im playing myself you dont even get enough time to get to the actual goal kicker without literally sprinting over to them.

Look back two weeks to Henry's great goal. It was setup due to Owens hitting the ball forward whilst contesting on the ground, coping one high for his troubles, but no one is questioning everyone running to Henry.

King is definitely in the wrong headspace at the moment but examples like the above are purposely trying to find greater issue then already exists in my opinion.

It could be old Ross is pressuring the more experienced guys and cuddling some of the younger ones. Speculation. But he has form. I think he has pretty much decided the future and not everyone is thrilled. Have no idea who or why. But that what he was brought in to do.

Good observations. I know we have spirit in fighting hard in games. So it doesn’t all add up. Hard to know without being in there.

One thing I have noticed with Max is when the team song is sung after a win he hardly looks like he is busting a lung to get the words out

He barely mouths the words which is damn strange given he grew up a one eyed Saints fan

Either he doesn't like the sound of his own voice, or he doesn't know the words or he is quite the introverted type and lacks the confidence to really show emotion or confidence in general

Check it out next time .... whenever that may be

I have actually noticed that. Not a very demonstrative guy. Doesn’t scream leadership. Maybe on a personal level he is better.

He was definitely more lively if you go back and watch the Collingwood and Richmond wins but then its kind of noticeable across the whole group. Beating Collingwood was a big scalp and felt like the season was alive.

Hes always been a bit subdued though in the song.

But if were going to be critical of celebrations during losses we should at least have a look at what happens when they are winning as well.

Its funny the difference having a good season vs a bad season has to the overall demeanour.

Love Fox's take on Hammer's game. If you needed a reminder to take media analysis with a grain of salt.

Now THAT is truly hilarious.
And a timely reminder for all of us to take the footy gossip columnists with a tiny grain of salt.

Wonder if anyone ever calls the writer out on it?

Interesting at the end of the On The Couch piece, Lewis mentioning the man on the mark rule (how it's changed from when he was playing for Hawthorn) and how if teams can take advantage of it, it's a huge advantage for the offensive team these days. Couldn't agree more with that.
