Contracts mean very little these days to players or clubs, security and leverage that’s it. Player gets paid, club has bargaining power nothing more sadly.

Contracts do mean something, they mean that the player will at minimum be paid that amount.

Whether its playing football at one club or another or even retiring, they will be paid that figure.

I’m not buying the current narrative about next years draft, 12 months out they have no idea. Wasn’t this years draft rubbish, how’s that looking now ?.

Any club throwing away future firsts deserves to have it come back and bite them badly, including st Kilda.
Recruiters have plenty of idea. They've been watching these kids for years.

Losing that F1 makes me very uncomfortable. Look at how much trouble Collingwood are having with Houston without a first rounder & the price teams are paying to trade back in. We say we'll just use futures for Callaghan, but 2027 futures are compromised by Tassie and clubs (e.g. Port) want picks now not later.

This is essentially saying (for example's sake) Lindsay + F1 for Smith. Or Travaglia + F1 for Draper, or whatever example you want to use. Is the gap clearly that big? To FOS/Lalor maybe yes but every chance they go 1/2
Three points I'd like to make about this.

1) We won't be trading out of next year to get a Lachie Schultz, we will be trading out of it to bring in a pick in a stronger draft.

2) This year Collingwood got in a free agent, so even if the 'miss' Houston, they've still brought in someone on a band 1 contract. Hopefully we could do the same.

3) Trading rules are changing next year, meaning more flexibility with trading future firsts. So clubs trading out of next year won't be as hamstrung as Collingwood were this year. For example, if Finn wants us next year, we could still trade 2 future firsts. I'm sure the AFL would allow based on us having (hopefully) 3 firsts this year.

So, trading out of this year, regardless of whether the quality next year improves, is still a smart move imo

Isn’t pick 20 the first pick of the second round?

The pick we begin the second night of the draft?

If so that is a darn good pick. Lots of reassessing after the end of the first round. Could get some big offers with live trading.

No. Pick 20 is brisbanes first rounder for winning the flag.

I think it’s pick 24 that starts the second round

I think the OP said that, although I doubt a player retiring would get paid out.

I think the point was more that having a contract with a specific club means little in respect of that relationship continuing if the player decides he wants out.

Okay hear me out, what if Richmond’s Pick 1 was on the table?

Richmond give 1 and Baker, receive 3 and 8.
West Coast give 3 and 26, receive Baker and future first round pick.
St Kilda give future first round pick and 8, receive picks 1 and 26.

You missed the part where we give 7 as well. Pick 1 is never worth the trade.

out. Feels like us saying no to Soldo has had no effect and also seems like most supporters do feel like it is a disaster if we don't get Macrae.
I think LDU and Brayshaw will be OOC so a bit different.
And by do, I assume you mean don’t 😉

If Bailey Smith gets walked we should downgrade pick 8 to 11 or 13 and take him with that. Ready made and proven.

I dunno man, a two pick downgrade for another top 10 pick in a draft where there is no standout number 1 seems pretty appetising to me.

I wonder if Soldo comes to us for a packet of chips at the last moment on a 1 year deal.

we need a ruck

a) if one goes down
b) because Marshall should be playing the Daniher role. (IMHO)

I’m going to give this potential 3 way trade a crack.

SAINTS give: 8, F1, 27
SAINTS get: 3, 18, Tigers F2, 51

RICHMOND give: Baker, 18, F2,51
RICHMOND get: Saints F1, 27

EAGLES give: 3,
EAGLES get: 8, Baker

(This was a lot harder then I thought)

Perfect, and then we trade 18 to Hawks for Josh Battle.

Because thats what his compo pick should have been.

I reckon the Tigers would be very unhappy there.

Dunno how that is fixed though.

I’d love that, but Saints are getting too much from the Tigers there.

Saints 8 is being upgraded to 3.
Saints 27 is being upgraded to 18
Saints F1 is being downgraded to Richmond’s F2 (which won’t be many picks)
Saints additionally get 51.

We win on almost every level there.

Not sure Tigers will agree to that. Maybe pick 51 is a brokerage fee but the F2 wouldn’t be included.

I would absolutely do a trade where we traded out 8, 27 and F1 and traded-in 3 and 20.

Effective paying a F1 for jumping from 8 to 3 and 27 to 20.

It gives us a draft hand of 3, 7, 20 and 47.

Yeah ok, I'd be happy with that.

F1 2025 would be with the new point system.

Straight swapping 8 (1551) and 27 (703) for 3 (2234) and 20 (912) leaves 892 points in our favour.

892 points sits between pick 16 and 17 next year, so if we finish top 3 (unlikely obviously) we actually break even, or slightly win the trade.

Remove the tigers F2?

Yeah I’m really not sure.

As I said. It was pretty hard to work out.
Maybe Tigers keep F2;

SAINTS give: 8, F1, 27
SAINTS get: 3, 18, 51, Eagles F3

RICHMOND give: Baker, 18, 51
RICHMOND get: Saints F1, 27

EAGLES give: 3, F3
EAGLES get: 8, Baker

Points wise it works out (rates Baker at pick 10 which is overs but probably satisfies the Tigs... maybe they get Eagles F3 too)

So we would be left with:

3,7,18,47,51,85

F2,F3,F3
