Anyone that is interested in having a look at Henry Smith re the future he's playing VFL today vs Port Melbourne #25 shoulders heavily strapped playing forward. Former Crow Matt Signorello #17 for PM.

Not sure the Lions see Smith as a ruckman given 1st year draftee Ty Gallop is doing the Relieving ruck when Darcy Fort rests. Ty Goallop mind you is doing very well against the 2 big PM ruckmen giving away plenty of height.

Sorry to intrude ya'll, just wanted to ask what's going on with big Jordan Butts? Been a fan of his a few years despite his limitations as a player. As you know Carlton's 2nd KPD stocks behind Weitering are about as dogshite as they come and with you guys apparently being the favourite to land Leek Aleer (according to C4) I would think Butts might look for a move back to Vic?

Is he injured? Out of favour? Big fan of Worrell and Murray so just assuming they're currently seen as ahead of him for now?

Just out of favour. He may get the nod over Keane some weeks (depending on match-ups) but he’s deserving of a secure first team position. He’d be a great pick up for a number of clubs.

Agree. And good trade bait to improve our draft hand ahead of Tasmania-compromised drafts arriving.

But solid cover to have in case of injuries this season

Butts is very solid and would start for probably half of the current teams in the AFL, but assuming that none of Keane / N Murray / Worrell suffer a significant injury, it’s unlikely that Butts will get back into our senior side any time soon.

Butts is undoubtedly a better one on one defender than Keane. It’s not particularly close. However, Keane has a better intercept game, and is a far more creative player offensively.

Murray is our best key defender and he’s probably the main reason why Butts isn’t getting a game. It just feels like having both of Murray and Butts in our back 7 makes us a bit too one-dimensional back there and that it wouldn’t suit the game style we are trying to play.

Worrell is the preferred option as that “third tall”, and has a raking left boot plus the highest upside of any of these players.

I would describe Butts as a very good one on one defender, who is strong in the contest and best suited to playing on resting ruckmen, and the likes of Amartey, the King brothers, Oscar Allen, Treacy and Mabior Chol.

Offensively, he lacks creativity, tends to stifle ball movement and take the safest option, which sometimes hems us in. He reminds me a lot of Daniel Talia in this regard. Not unusual for key defenders and it’s not like he makes a high percentage of howler errors. I think his disposal efficiency (a shithouse stat which tells false stories) was the highest in our entire squad in 2024. Is he capable of seeing something in the centre of the ground and lacing out a high risk / high reward 45m pass to a moving target which leads to an offensive burst? Absolutely not on your life.

The other thing worth mentioning in relation to Butts is that he’s had multiple serious foot injuries. That could be a red flag, or they could be completely under control now. Hard to say.

So, assuming there’s no serious injury to one of those 3 guys currently in our side, I would suggest it’s very likely that Butts would seek a trade at season’s end (he will have a number of suitors), and that Carlton would be a perfect landing spot for him. I think we’d likely be willing to release Butts too, especially considering we also have Borlase as a very similar depth option. If Leek Aleer is on our radar as has been suggested, that would make Butts a virtual certainty to leave (again, this assumes all of Murray, Worrell and Keane are fit).

The price? Well if Butts only plays a handful of games for us in 2025, it can hardly be a steep price can it. Pick 40? Something like that.

I would say that right now, Butts is arguably the single most likely player on our entire list to be traded at the end of 2025 (Z Taylor, S Berry and B Cook stand out as others who may request a trade and actually have suitors).

I dont think you'll get much for an out of favour KPD on the open market.

I do like him though, he's a super solid defender. I reckon it's his "safe" disposal keeping him out of the team as much as anything, injury aside.

So that means Brisbane only have two ruckman on their list in big O and Darcy Fort? What are the premiers doing - terrible list management.

The fact that he signed early suggests to me that the $$$ were very good, Kane trying to create disharmony already?

I doubt they were leagues’s best forward good, Kane is likely spot on. Was a strange deal at the time and isn’t getting any stranger as he looks like becoming an unstoppable force.

I'm not sure it will bother him all that much, and as such who cares what Kane thinks.

didn’t hear what else Kane said, only commenting on the size of the contract component. TT’s manager will just renegotiate if there’s too great a disparity between his contract and market value anyway. I think from the club’s perspective, the long deal is more about making the player harder to acquire rather than making out like bandits by ultimately underpaying a player that has turned into a beast.

Otherwise you end up with a Houston situation

It's a pretty tight market, lots of sides could use someone like Jordon. Would be surprised if he fetched a second-rounder but not shocked, to be honest.

2nd rounder would be a good outcome, id love to keep him though
Problem then is the shorter Borlase would be our only other KPD option and he's really not any more decisive or attacking with his ball use than Butts....and not as athletic either. Butts is a must keep IMO. Contracted to 2026.

Butts would only go if he demanded it you’d think. Doubt LM would be looking to shed depth in a contending phase. I’d move Borlase on for a cheap project replacement though.

Hard to know how close we got to actually signing him but it seems like missing out on Redman has worked out alright. It would cost us alot of money.
I was big on getting Redman at the time but I agree. Probably would've prevented us from going after, say, one of Cumming or Peatling, who were bigger needs for us as it stood last year (yes you could say Cumming and Redman are similar-ish, but Cumming has greater positional flexibility)

I would still prefer Redman to Cumming.

Statistically, there’s not a lot of difference between Peatling/Cumming and the players they logically replaced Berry/Jones. But I think they make us better overall, even if they’ve started a little slowly and may not be prolific in terms of stats. Although, I still believe that Jones has a chance to make it.

The unknown part is what does a change of scenery do to Redman and to us?

It's not like Mason form fell off a cliff in 2024 and we were pretty desperate for elite ball users in the half back line last year (which Redman was, seeing he picked up 400+ meters gained with an 83% KE). Downside is it may have prevented us from getting Sid, and that may be worth a bad year on its own.

Been shit after re-signing on a long term contact on big money so he might be that type of player, interesting if the same would have occur had he sign with us long term on big money or whether it would have been different as he had a point to prove at a new club.

I wouldn't as a wingman is more of a need.

Cumming is coming off an interrupted pre-season, so be patient on judging him. Also, needs to get used to playing in a new team.

This will actually be a very interesting sliding doors, for years to come (and yes Damo, an actual 'sliding doors')

Will the bad year end up being looked fondly upon due to the lone fact that it gave us Sid? Not saying our guy will end up anything like this example yet, but Geelong's bad year in 06 gave them Selwood
