You'd take an off-spinner with a 30 ish average every day of the week.
Not unlikely that he retires with an average under 30 based on how he's trended the past few years anyway. IIRC he was averaging around 32 2-3 years ago.

Harbhajan Singh, Tim Southee, Dan Vettori, Ishant Sharma, Zaheer Khan.

30 is an arbitrary cut-off point anyway. The difference between having an average if 30 vs 29 is the same as 29 vs 28. At an average of over 29 you can also chuck in Anil Kumble, Kapil Dev, Chaminda Vaas and Lance Gibbs.

An average of 30.4 with such longevity is frankly absurd for someone that has played most of their matches in Australia. To try to dispute his record is ridiculous.

I'm not against dropping Lyon if we see his form drop off for a while and Todd Murphy (or whoever else) is banging down the door, but we haven't seen him bowl enough to make that judgement yet.

Absurd is something of an exaggeration.

He’s spent a little over half of that career - and the more successful half at that - bowling behind a trio who have made his job as comfortable as it can physically be as a spinner in Australia (which still isn’t that easy, certainly).

But yes if you are going to be a spinner in Australia, the best possible scenario in which to do it is have 3 quicks that bowl ahead of you consistently reducing opponents to 4-80 and taking their wickets at around 23 at home.

Taking his home wickets at 31 and change is strong and speaks to his reliability and the fact that you know he will wring every ounce out of himself especially over 12 years but absurd is a loose term for it.

He has almost 400 more wickets than any other Australia finger spinner ever. I know the likes of Mallet and Trumble didn't play nearly as many Tests, but I'd say that's worthy of the use of "absurd" as a descriptor. And even looking at the Mallet and Trumble examples, Lyon has a better strike rate than Mallet over a far greater amount of Tests. He's our best finger spinner since Trumble, so in over 100 years.

Other than Warne, there's MacGill (208) that's taken over 200 wickets as an Australian spinner post-Benaud. That's it. He's been aided by a great fast bowling attacks, but as were many that came before him.

Man, you gotta send em in today on a spicy Gabba wicket

No offence Nasser

Maybe Nasser made the right call but didn't have the bowlers to pull it off

Eh, he was probably ****ed either way

Relativity doesn’t make it any more absurd, though.

Keshav Maharaj is about to break 200 test wickets at under 29 and his average even in SA is under 30. He’s the first South African spinner to reach the landmark and to do it at that average in their conditions is impressive in itself but again it’s only just breaching the 30 barrier and he’s still getting great assistance from Rabada and now Jansen and in his early days from Steyn and Philander.

One thing that we ignore when we talk about these guys is that these are the conditions they grow up on:

Bumrah with his ridiculous average in India is, after all, bowling where he grew up. The W’s in Pakistan, Vaas in Sri Lanka, Warne here etc.

It doesn’t of course make it less impressive, but it makes it understandable - you play enough cricket somewhere you get to know a bit about it.

He’s a great bowler I just don’t see 30 as being a number that makes him a freak. If anything the length of time he’s done it probably does

I've reviewed every pic and video of the pitch, this will be a good toss to lose, my prediction is whoever bats first will get rolled Day 1 and then runs will come.

****ed either way, he didn't have the side, that decision has nothing on Pontings call to bowl when he just lost McGrath in the warm ups in 2005 and your best player is a legspinner.

We better not bowl first. When in doubt you bat and it will be a typical GABBA pitch where it settles down quick

Hussain was one of about a dozen captains who’s done the same thing against strong Australian sides and paid the price. If it wasn’t the first day of an Ashes I don’t think anyone would remember it relative to any other instance

Simon Jones doing his knee probably wasn't part of Nasser's pre match plan either.

Should leave Hazlewood out and play Boland. Better bowler imo.
Otherwise just go the 4 quicks and bowl first if it's greenish

lol nice try and no he’s not a better bowler. Hazelwood is our BEST bowler off the ICC rankings and no we aren’t going 4 quicks to cater for the whinging from Victorians. You need a spinner in Australia

Should've left the grass on it. The test 2 years ago v SA was a hum dinger
Make it a challenge for batting.

Just what broadcasters would love and other 2 day test. Think we want at least a 4 day test at least

Appears the side is up.
Ridiculous selections. Leaving Boland and Inglis out is ridiculous
The selection of that team is a law into itself. Continually baffling

Why is it ridiculous we won the last test in 2 and a bit days. The batting was never changing so can that thought. Haze was always ahead of Boland who is solid backup that’s it. Nothing wrong with admitting he’s backup he has done a good job but Haze is just a bit better

No you don't. MCG and SCG yes not for the pink ball or Perth or Brisbane.
Play them sure but don't see them as a walk up.
Use them as a 5th bowling option.
Ship has long sailed but baffling Maxwell never played in Australia.
