Lewis Melican

Player Profile

Lewis Melican is a young key defender with enormous promise. The Victorian was rookie-listed by the Sydney Swans in November 2014 and enjoyed a breakthrough 2017 season en route to winning the club’s Rising Star award. He kept St Kilda great Nick Riewoldt to just 10 possessions and one goal in Round 18 to claim an AFL Rising Star nomination. Melican has battled a number of injuries in his time in red and white but didn’t suffer any setbacks in 2019. Draft history: 2015 Rookie Draft selection (Sydney) No. 52.

Who thought Melican would be one of our most important players this year? He has been outstanding. Probably more consistent than McCartin.

I thought Hamling might even make it hard for him, but he has been exceptional

Thank **** Ben McKay turned us down.

Massive tonight (and indeed for most of this season).

Was always one of my favourites but must admit I was wondering whether he could overcome his injuries and get a decent opportunity to deliver on his early promise.

Just a guy who I'm really pleased for.
Has overcome adversity and now a fixture in the backline.

Well done Lewis. :)

Continuing my 'trying to be positive' tour, what about the year that this guy had!

Someone who was being negative and a curmudgeon would maybe ask how the **** did he not win Most Improved at the B&F when he literally tripled his games played from last year, and was excellent in many of those games. I won't ask that because I am being positive.

He just looked soooo confident in his ability this year. I think I have praised his confidence now about half a dozen times at least this year. It just stood out so much. The playing in front to win the intercept mark, the taking off off the mark to get some run and dash going, the side-stepping players. Looking at him in action this year you would never know that he is supposed to be one of our gorilla defenders who has a lengthy injury history.

I really hope he can stay fit, and McCartin can stay fit, and both have a full pre-season and continue playing games together, because I think that duo, along with Sir Dane, was probably a top 5 reason we were better this year, and I think they're only just scratching the surface of what they can do. Worth remembering that the famed Grundy-Richards partnership (which still sounds like they are going to write a folk song in 1965) took a few years of playing together to really hit their strides. I think if McCartin-Melican get those years playing together, they'll build their chemistry and you'll see less of the both of them going up for the same mark, spoiling each other etc. that we saw in parts this year.

Congrats to him on a career-best season. Very well-deserved and just reward for his years of resilience and patience and hard work.

I lost track of the number of times I yelled out "well done Lewis" both at home games and the TV. I love Juzzy but Lewis was EASILY our most impressive improver.
I will be delighted if Edwards comes on this season and we can have he and Lewis locking down with Tom intercepting. Add Blakey and we'll be a lot stronger against the tall teams.

Damn it caesar88 , you just had to make me feel a glimmer of positivity with that uplifting post. Now back to roasting coaches and some players.
