You are assuming an either/or scenario and overlooking the fact that the older supporters could continue to support their existing side AND support a Tassie side. The only conflict would be when the two sides play each other.

Although I admit that it's a little different in circumstances (less of an Aussie rules state, and a relocation), but this happened when the Swans setup camp in Sydney. I sat with plenty of members who supported another team primarily, but who quickly adopted Sydney as their second team.
