Shaun Atley is an unrestricted free agent. Surely we will go all out to get him.

- 29 years old next year
- Has played 226 largely anonymous games, way more than you would think
- Career average of 17 touches
- Plays outside midfield, half back, defender, forward, super versatile
- 2 career Brownlow votes with no other accolades of any kind
- Lightly framed so struggles with tackling and contested possessions

This is the exact sort of player we love, and he would be free to obtain!

I smell a 4-5 year deal

Give it a spell Scorp that's not even funny anymore.

FREE AGENT/RETIREMENT DEPARTURES
Daniel Talia (Ret.)
Tom Lynch (Ret.)
Jake Kelly (band 5 compo)

UNCONTRACTED ROOKIES RELEASED

Patrick Parnell
Tariek Newchurch (Cat B)

UNCONTRACTED RE-SIGN
Taylor Walker (1 year)
Ronin O'Connor (2 years)

Is how I see it shaking out from here. The only point of contention is Daniel Talia. I could see us retaining him.

That's close to what I see but IMP I think Walker, Lynch, Talia, Kelly and Crouch definitely go along with O'Connor and Mad Dog. Borlase is just too slow.

I think you nailed the rest.

TRADES
Elliot Himmelburg

This gives us five list spots, unless lists go back to 46, and we would have 7.

I'm not sure this is enough?

We would at least want two draftees plus the two NGAs, plus Stephens and Dawson?
It’s really interesting isn’t it. We’re now at the point where we’re going to have to make calls on younger players too to clear list spots.

Surely we are taking three draft picks given we have a first rounder and two seconds, plus the two NGAs (unless either of those required the use of a second rounder?). Doesn’t leave any space for trades at all.

I think you are spot on with the two rookie delistings and O’Connor / Gollant moving into those spots.

Perhaps Mrouch and Talia have played their last games for the club. And Lynch moves on too?

It feels like a real pointless waste of energy posting this.

No way we send that much experience out the door in one whack.

So the list size for 2021 were as follows. Are we expecting the same for 2022? Ie Maximum of 42 across main and cat A rookie, plus another 2 cat B rookies = overall max of 44

———————————————

The AFL has confirmed list sizes for the next season, as part of a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the AFL Players’ Association 2021.

It will see clubs permitted to have a minimum of 37 players and a maximum of 44 players on their books.

Primary lists must have between 36 and 38 players. Category A rookies are capped at 4-6, up to a total of 42 players on a list including primary-listed players. Each club can also have two Category B rookies.

I assume the following list is up to date (taken from contract thread)? And our list is currently full at 44 as Parnell has filled Stengles spot.

We don’t have a lot of wriggle room. Assuming we’re bringing in 5 new faces minimum - there are some tough calls to be made.

——————————————-

Contracted until end of 2021
Daniel Talia (11yrs)
Taylor Walker
Matthew Crouch
Tom Lynch
Ben Davis (R)
Jake Kelly
Ronin O'Connor
Lachlan Gollant
Kieran Strachan (R)
David MacKay (R)
James Borlase (R)
Tariek Newchurch (R)
Nick Murray (R)
Patrick Parnell (R)

I've been updating the OP, so that should be accurate. Let me know if it isn't.

3 of the 5 have been injured for most of the season to date. Yes, they're good senior players but they haven't been on the park enough. Tex is a hard choice, personally I would like him to do a Sam Mitchell and Luke Hodge. Go to another club for a year or two and then come back and join our coaching ranks. Lynch is already in a coaching role with the girls side. Talia's body is just about cooked. Again if he wants to coach, do what I suggested for Tex. Crouch we get a reasonable compo/trade pick.

Sure losing experience like that hurts but we appear to be targetting some good players in F/A so it's not like we will sit on our backsides and do nothing. Have to keep churning the list over. Otherwise the rebuild will take longer.

Yeah, agree Tex should do what Mitchell and Hodge did. Playing their last couple of years with a team that is rebuilding and helping out the young developing players with some experienced and capable hands.

Now which rebuilding club that’s developing a young list would be a good fit for Tex?

You're missing my point entirely. He goes there to pick up different ideas and the way another club is run with a view to coaching when he retires from playing. Why is that a hard concept to grasp? Yes, he having a good year to date but the cold weather has hit us and he'll get injured/suspended again soon. The last 3 seasons this has happened. Look he has been the heart and soul of the club but there always comes a time where you have to look at things differently. I expect we'll offer him a 1 year deal, cuz he a club legend.

No, I get it. I was just being a prick.

I think whilst Tex has anything like his current form left in him he is a real benefit to Fog and Thilthorpe. I’d keep him for next year. If he tails off but wants to keep going then ok to head off to another club.

Wow, just had a quick glance at the Gold Coast list management and trade thread and in the last 2 pages alone posters have mentioned Tex, Lynch, Himmelberg, Crouch and Talia as potential targets this offseason...

Seems like 'experience and leadership' is well and truly on the menu up north!
You should tell them we'll swap Lynch, Berg, Crouch and Talia for Rowell, Luko and Rankine.
