Official Matchday Programme;

http://www.collingwoodfc.com.au/portals/0/magpies_docs/Round6_matchProgram.pdf

My Thoughts;

Both teams have been hit by injuries, and with both coming off a 6 day break, this game may get a bit scrappy in periods, especially late. The Dogs were dealt a blow during the week, with the loss of Hall, Higgins and Hudson to injury, while the Pies lost Darren Jolly, who underwent surgery on his troublesome knee, and who will be missing for a few weeks yet, although the impact is softened somewhat by the bye for the Pies next weekend.

The Dogs and Pies traditionally play their home and away games at Etihad Stadium, so it will be a welcome change for both teams to play at the home of football, the MCG.

Collingwood welcomes back Andrew Krakouer, and the understudy ruck in Cameron Wood, while Dayne Beams is this weeks unlucky player, although with rumours abound surrounding several players struggling after Monday's tough win, he still may get a reprieve.

The Dogs performance last week has been criticised, but it was only late in the game they let themselves down, missing key shots at goal and allowing Fremantle to finish stronger then them over the closing periods.

Adam Cooney has copped most of the blame, but the backline has to take as much blame, as they didn't exactly hold up their end of the deal late either.

As for the Pies, Mick Malthouse described the Essendon win as “the best performance of the season”, and while many saw it as the reigning champs doing just enough to win, it shouldn't be underestimated just how hard the Bombers are to beat at this stage of the season.

The standout performances of the match came from Pendlebury, Jolly and Cloke, yet it was the efforts of Wellingham, Reid, Toovey and Davis that had as much, if not more of an impact on the four quarter effort.

It will be interesting to see how the Dogs approach this game, it could be a real season turning game for them, or it could be just another game that sees them drop further down the table, after being rated so high by so many pre season.

The interesting factor this week could be the weather, with rain a near certainty during the afternoon and evening in Melbourne, it would we would be lucky to get away with no rain during the match. Which team that favours is undetermined, as both teams don't really have a heap of recent experience in wet conditions.

Player Focus;

CHRIS TARRANT

Many questioned whether Chris, when he returned to Collingwood could hold down a key defensive post, but the last 2 weeks have gone a long way to proven those doubters wrong.
His performance against arguably the best forward in the game, Jack Riewoldt, followed by maybe an even better defensive effort against both Hurley and Ryder on ANZAC day, surely has put any long term doubts to bed.
Yes, there are still question marks over whether his body can stand up over the whole season, but with the likes of Goldsack and Lachie Keefe as able backup in the VFL, we will be able to rest Tarrant at different stages in the season.
Anyway, with the injury to Nathan Brown, we should all feel blessed that Taz chose to come back to us, because without him we would have a serious problem down back at this very stage.

Tip;

Ultimately, the Dogs loss of 3 key players, adding to the others already missing makes it almost mission impossible against the rampaging Pies, and with no need to hold anything back with the bye coming up next week, you would expect Collingwood to leave everything on the park and run away clear winners here, although the wet conditions might keep it closer then most expect.

NEXT WEEKEND;

With both VFL and AFL teams having the bye next weekend, the players and staff will get a well deserved rest, with Senior Football Analyst at the club, Marcus Wagner stating “On Tuesday the guys are going out for a few country visits to Echuca. The footy department will give the boys off next weekend for a bit of R&R. It's only five rounds but you have to remember we were trekking in Arizona in mid Nov.

I'm aware that Dayne Beams and Simon Buckley didn't play in the VFL, but who are the rumoured players Matty? I haven't heard anything about that.

I think there were rumours re Chris Dawes with a hammy, and also Harry O who was hobbling the last half on Anzac day, that they may not come up.

But apparently, they both trained yesterday, so seems like they'll be OK?

PS great job Matty

I'm only going on what was reported at our Thursday (?) training session by the media, that Wellingham, Dawes and O'Brien seemed to be really struggling throughout the sessions, in fact I believe O'Brien left the track early.

Mick mentioned himself in his press conference that several player had pulled up particularly sore after Monday's match, and stated that they would be tested in the leadup to Sundays (todays) game.

I wouldn't be shocked if there was a late change, especially considering we left both Buckley and Beams out of the VFL lineup.

Edit: So, basically what Swoop says above.;):)

Re: Collingwood vs Western Bulldogs Matchday Discussion.

Dick and Krakouer to bounce back with 3 goals each.

Dogs lacking experienced players!

Pies will play four quarters and flex their muscles.

This game is our first real test, make no mistake. We haven't even played anyone from the 2010 top 8 bar Carlton and I simply don't rate them, so this is going to be a big deal IMO. The games for us this season which are going to challenge dramatically are those against Freo, Dogs, Cats, and the Hawks.

Essendon would have been a pretty decent challenge this year and I think Carlton will be up there but I don't rate them as a great team either. I don't think the Dogs will challenge you as much as you believe, they are without a number of best 22 players such as: Giansiracusa, Hall, Hargrave, Higgins and Hudson. A few of their players I still think are a touch underdone in Lake and Cooney so The Dogs are from their best. I think they will really struggle without their key full forward and ruckman as well as losing Higgins who really stepped it up when they came back at Freo last week.

Hopefully it's a good game for all watching/listening. :thumbsu:

I just hope we're on our game and not suffering from complacency.

Go pies.:thumbsu::)

I said earlier in the week MM has made said several times this year it was all about getting to the bye and reassessing. I think he will have us fired up.

If you look back in hindsight last year, out of the 26 games last year how many did we not come out committed? Even in the NAB cup we looked hungry. I know it has plagued us in the past (inconsistency) and I will hold onto that fear for awhile longer but I get the feeling the boys will not let up again this year.

Pretty happy as the game is on (starts 3am) in Canada. Pies by plenty.

I just watched In Black and White... loving licuria's attempts to sound like a news presenter!! hahaha

I think that Beams is just being rested. Today is a real test for us. Just hope that Umpire 25 S.Ryan (he is the one that gave a hand up to St.Kilda player after Grand Final) can give us the benefit of any 50/50 decision. He is a shocker. Just hate it when this happens, yet we seem to have him almost ever game.

The outs from both teams seem to even out, so hopefully we can put four quarters together for a good win. First time going to match at this time for me and taking the grandkids.

What do you think of the twilight time slot?:confused:

We will have to get used to it, as the AFL seem likely to add it as the 9th fixture from next year on, be it a Saturday Twilight match.

Personally, I don't mind it, even on a Sunday, you don't get home too late, it starts at a decent time, and obviously if you can't go, you will always have the option of watching it live on Foxtel.

I hope we get away to a good start and therefore deflate the Bulldogs.

The only way they beat us is if they get off to a flyer and then throw their bodies in desperately.

im starting to really enjoy it.Friday night used to be my fave timeslot but not since I moved back to perth and have to suffer the delay.

Starting to get a really bad feeling about today just think that the Bulldogs are setting this as their own little home and away GF and we look just about ripe for the picking with a few players sore from last week. Fingers crossed we can get away with a win no matter how small/ big it is!

I really hope MM starts each of Dick and Krak on the ground. Not sure who I'd have as sub (possibly Sidey) - but I feel it would be a real incentive for these two guys to really show their wares.

Looking at the Dogs they have plenty of grunt in the midfield - Boyd looks to be fully wound up since the birth of his child (daughter iirc), Cross hard at it, Griffen in career best form and Cooney who we all know has much more improvement left in him. Ward is a tough nut and Picken is likely to be given a run with role. With little Libba, Wallis, Addison there is certainly no shortage of rotations through the centre and we should be in for a real fight in there - certainly without Beamer it weakens us somewhat here.

In defence the Dogs look sturdy Lake while down on form is still formidable Morris/Williams/Markovic should pick up Didak/Cloke/Dawes. Murphy has been good this year, Gilbee back can be damaging also.

Where the Dogs look thin is how to counter our rebounding backs especially Heater who has been consistently good every game - perhaps they will allocate Picken/Addison to this onerous role.

It is hard to see where the Dogs forwards can get on top of our backs - so this is where we should gain clear ascendancy as the game wears on. The Dogs will be looking for multiple goals from Sherman, Griffen and Cooney.

While at first glance this game looked a soda - the mid field strength and tenacity of the Dogs should keep them in it for a fair while. Hopefully once the initial intensity goes out of the game we can close out this game relatively comfortably.

Sub Wellingham, have Krakouer play through the middle and Dick forward.
If our sub history tells us anything, it's that the player(s) coming into the side have more of a chance of being the sub then not.

I hope Krak isn't the sub, but there's a possibility he will be.

My tip, and hope would be a bigger name player, maybe even a Luke Ball or a Davis.

Not with half their team out or playing injured.

I am confident the will put kraks as sub unfortunatly. I think Mick will want to bring his excitment and freakishness in the second half if we need someone to break the game open. I cant see him putting in anyone else as a sub unless Beams is a late inclusion.

As for todays game, I am more condident then I was against Carlton and Essendon. I rekon we will win 8 goals +.
