Well here's some cause for optimism.
Irish players in club B&F counts
Note those players performed well for an even spread of teams in terms of strength--a mix of contenders (including a premiership winner), mid-ladder and cellar dwellers (including a wooden spooner).
- Sarah Rowe (Coll): 5th in 2019 (1st season)
- Aileen Gilroy (NM): 5th in 2020 (1st season), 8th in 2021
- Cora Staunton (GWS): 6th in 2018 (1st season), =2nd in 2019, 7th in 2020, 3rd in 2021
- Yvonne Bonner (GWS): 7th in 2019 (1st season)
- Niamh Kelly (WC): =8th in 2020 (1st season), =4th in 2021
- Aisling McCarthy (WB/WC): 11th in 2019 (1st season), 4th in 2020, 2nd in 2021 (missed 2 games)
- Orla O'Dwyer (BL): 2nd in 2021 (2nd season)
- Grace Kelly (WC): =4th in 2021 (2nd season)
- Aishling Sheridan (Coll): 8th in 2021 (2nd season)
And there's also been a few others who have had unlucky runs with injury. The least common outcome has been a player not cracking a regular game (only 2 or 3 instances of that).
Weighing up all of the above, the most likely outcome in 4-5 months from now is Geelong supporters asking 'why the hell didn't we recruit a/multiple Irish player(s) 3 years ago!'.
thanks for that; if I'm being honest I was only really aware of maybe 4 of those players - promising precedents for Kearns to draw upon!
