Wonder if part of the deal would be to get her a playing role with the AFLW side as well...

Unless she does a Hodgy I reckon it would be 1 year max, and reckon staying at Melbourne for another season or retirement would be likely depending on whether they win the 2022 flag, which I am guessing they won’t.

Sad for Barber. But totally the right decision.

Thought she looked really handy in the ruck last week, despite still preferring to see her play up forward. Hopefully she can get back for the last round and build some more experience at AFLW level.
Barber was excellent last week in tandem with Darby.
I think she could be both a quality ruck and key forward in the mould of King from NM.
I'm bullish on both Fuller and Gunjaca and hope they are given a good run at it in the last couple of games which should give them some confidence heading into next season.

Interesting that Friswell was omitted last week, named in the VFLW side and she's again in the VFLW side

This week it's Gabbi who's been omitted and while she's still an emergency for the AFLW team, she's not named in the VFLW team, not even as an emergency - is that more a sign of managed since it's likely she won't play for either side this weekend?

Curious what happens next week

gah, reeeeeally frustrating loss.

The midfield was absolutely spanked out of the centre clearances; I thought Lowther took far too long to start rotating others through; took til the 2nd quarter before Gardiner and Crockett-Grills were introduced and both ended up being solid contributors.

Good games from Morrison and McMahon, but there were far too many like Sophie Van De Heuval, who does have another gear she can go to in terms of intensity - her 2nd half was ok - but far too often chooses to cruise around without a sense of purpose.

If we're ever going to become a genuinely competitive team then we have to win games against opposition like St Kilda, who I don't think are any better than us.

This may be a stupid question - was there a breeze or strong wind at the ground? I know we're not necessarily the best kicks for goal, but twitter comments read like we had chances but annoying misses - so wasn't sure if it was the ball drifting & us not reading the conditions

There was a wind going towards the end we were kicking to in the first quarter, but it seemed to be blowing a bit across the goal as well instead of straight down the ground.

Didn't see the game. And clearly didn't miss much, given the final score (or lack of it). But you would have to say that while there have been signs of some overall improvement this year, the general outcome is actually not greatly promising.

We've now played all four of the teams that entered the comp after us over the course of the season - for one strong win (Tigers), one extremely narrow win (Eagles), and two quite disappointing losses (Suns and Saints). The prevailing message seems to be that we're not improving any faster than some of the real minnows of the comp. And I end up reflecting again on the relative 'strength' of our list. So many players who would be little more than 'fringe' elsewhere are playing every week in this team. And the mediocre results we're seeing are therefore not that surprising, I guess.

List cull looks as if it will need to be brutal and sustained if we're to get out of this malaise. Retaining some experience is necessary, of course. But it's hard to think of more than half a dozen players who you would be really disappointed to lose from the squad at this point. That tells you everything you need to know about how 'meh' this line-up is looking right now.

I know we could still finish with three times as many wins this year as we did in 2021 (with an extra round of footy included). But I fear that the gap between the better teams and us is only widening considerably at this point.

Lowther and his team will be earning every penny if they can even get this team to 4-5 wins next year, in my opinion. Light years away from being a truly credible outfit at the moment.

EDIT: And I now see we got comfortably beaten at home in the VFLW as well today. Happy days...

Will not be a list cull when 4 new sides are in next year, and no early pics

In terms of a "list cull", it depends on how many players or what percentage of the list is turned over for one to deem it a cull - team lists are 30 active players & we have 3 players inactive this season for various reasons

We know that the new teams can sign up to 14 existing players already on lists, but no confirmation of how many players each existing team can lose or if there'll be a cap as there was with the previous expansion teams

Theoretically we could lose a number of players to the expansion sides and the players we do lose will likely impact further list management decisions. Higgins has only played one match, McWilliams will be 37, and Garing will be 34 returning from a year out due to pregnancy - from the outside, those 3 players may seem easy options to not renew contracts for next season, but if we lose 6/8 players to expansion teams, add in that there's likely to be retirement/s, we might not want to lose another 4 or 5 players on top of that and be looking at 10 - 15 new players being added to the list

There's going to be some tough decisions this off season, and a lot of it may be out of our control
