You’ve all missed the point on the supposed ambassador money - IT CANNOT BE OFFERRED AS PART OF CLARKOS SALARY OR CONTRACT. You sign him within the soft cap then APPLY TO THE AFL AFTER THAT to see if they approve the ambassador payment. This puts us at a huge advantage as we will have soft cap space to cover Clarko and whoever he wants to bring in - as for GWS if they asked about the ambassador payment last week and got rejected then clearly they are struggling with the soft cap and cannot afford Clarkson. It’s clearly advantage North.
alright whats the latest you are hearing?

announcement before sydney game didnt happen.

new timeline?

It isn’t. Officially they pay the cap and surprise surprise the ambassador money gets approved paid for by the afl

Unfortunately the only advantage is that Clarko would need to be convinced to take a leap of faith that the Ambassador money would come. Let's be honest, it would.

This ****ing club man , can we ever just get something good without strings/stress/bollocks

No ifs buts or maybes. He's the only real marquee coach around, and the expansion clubs are the only clubs to get approved big dollar marquee contracts anyway.

I also reckon the AFL would outright tell him they would have no issue giving him the extra ??? dollars if they actually wanted him to GWS.

These don't seem like the actions of someone who has a verbal agreement with us. There is no reason for him to meet them just to bluff anyone.

It's not done until it's done.
Exactly. As if someone of Clarkson’s calibre would be wasting his time and GWS’s time for ‘bluffing’ purposes. He’s a professional not a moron!

Or is he the ultimate professional and would prefer to fly over and shake hands with GWS powerbrokers in person to thank them for the opportunity but he’s officially taking the NMFC position?..

No new news other than what I posted earlier today in that this weeks window dressing meetings have pushed back any announcement but I have no info on a timeline other than confirming he has verbally agreed to coach us. The problem for GWS is for instance they may only be able to offer say $1.2 under the soft cap and need the ambassador payment to top up - we can offer say $1.6 if needed so we are already in front before any extra payment. Fact is that extra payment can only come if approved AFTER the contact is signed. Clearly GWS know that and tried to get in early. They clearly cannot offer what we can purely under the soft cap / therefore advantage North.

surely with clarko its not just who can offer the most money

id like to think keeping the family in melbs, coaching a non plastic team, coaching a side he has connections to etc play a big part

People scoffed but the Ziebull comments about setting an ultimatum might actually be on the money.

One thing this club has excelled at in the 13 years has been standing with roses in one hand and our dick in the other trying to woo "the one".

Buckley, Cook, Martin, Gaff, Kelly.

Excluding Cook there we were allowing our targets unlimited consideration time and counter-offering ourselves up and up while blocking ourselves from pursuing alternative paths when there was a natural time to cut and run.

I hope this is all smokescreen and the club really have him wrapt up because otherwise we could be costing ourselves critical time to investigate other candidates, appoint other positions and start re-signing some of our most important players. He's been a great coach but in a couple of weeks a 7/10 coach will be a lot better than no coach.

As tazaa said time is the enemy who has ****ed time and again the last decade.
I have no doubt they have given a timeline, it may not be the one we all want but there's no way we've gone into the negotiations with Clarko saying take as long as you want. We have (according to all reports) said the job is his if he wants it, but if he doesn't we need time to run a process to find another coach.

We won't be sitting around in October waiting for the phone to ring.
