The threat of Gaff going to the draft is stupid, won't happen. If we indicate to North that we'll match and they walk away Gaff has many other suitors in Melb who'll be prepared to trade for him. Or he stays on very good coin and we go around again in 12 months time if he wants to leave.

People need to understand that Gaff isn't unhappy at the Eagles and isn't a homesick 18yo threatening to sit out of the game for a year.

Finally some sense, if you match the offer Gaff is staying.

Gaff is a FREE agent. Other teams won't trade for Gaff either. If WC match I assume he would stay. But if he is desperate to come to Melbourne the PSD is a good back-up option.

Only North Melbourne have made an offer that presumably the Eagles wouldn't match, the several other sides that want him would have expected the Eagles to match there offers, thus creating a trade scenario. All other interested Vic sides offers to him were basically the same as the Eagles.

We don't have to match for him to stay, and as said he isn't desperate to return to Melbourne and nor is he any risk of going into the PSD. Carlton could easily have smashed all other teams out of the water for him already, they are not in the discussion at all and he wouldn't risk falling to them.

Gaff is a RESTRICTED FREE agent, he is not a free hit.

Man you're going to be disappointed when you don't match.
I'm getting this vision...

So he's coming to North then?

I’m asking you because you’ve suggested, not recuiting him somehow magically hurts North.

Do North lose big footy points or something?

Were Norths better off failing to land Dusty or Kelly.

If Gaff elects to go to Norths and the club fails to land him that is embarrassing to say the least. All because the club wouldnt beat a compo pick 22ish and were too anal to act reasonably at the trade table.

So Norths fail to land a big fish and fail to dramatically improve their list AND at the same time come out looking like amatures.

Then the Saints come along and offer up Acres and a second rounder and get Gaff.

Well done........well done.

Wonder if any other players would bother even talking to North if it panned out that way? Suppose they could always offer $1.5m next time.

Not forgotten.

Conveniently ignored by those with one eye closed.

Who is ignoring it? West Coast has every right to match any bid, but that doesn't mean North are then obligated to propose a trade that beats your compo.

So then a narrative is invented that we somehow have an obligation to Gaff to try and trade for him if a bid is matched, and that it will "look bad" if we don't, even though Gaff would be well aware of all the permutations and likely outcomes in advance.

As if Gaff wants to go to the dwarf burning rabble.

what you’ve written is all in your head. It’s very imaginative but it shows you’re way to emotionally invested in this already.
It’s time to switch off the radio put the papers down.. if you keep going at this rate your brain will be scrambled before the start of trade week.

Think long and hard..
Gaff may or may not leave west coast..
If he comes to North, great.
If he doesn’t, we’re in the same position. How does that hurt north?

Ignoring some of the circular discussion for a minute and pardon my ignorance, but how many moving parts are involved in potential compo for Gaff? Eg: Dilution of the pick, where the pick stands at the mo (pending WC finishing position)

North aren't obliged to do anything, but if you think walking way from a FA signing won't affect future FA signings that is very naive.

If North go to Gaff and say 'we're interested in signing you for one.. hundred... billion dollars... - but if we have to trade then seeya' then the likelihood of Gaff signing is pretty slim. Why would any player commit to a new club in a new city after 8 years and 175 games knowing that the club is more interested in Jared Polec and chasing more 'big fish' in the future?
