Angus Graham to Adelaide

We need a backup ruckman, albeit someone who is happy to spend most (if not all) of the season playing in the SANFL. They're not easy to come by. Most of them either aren't good enough (which is why they're already playing in the SANFL) or have delusions of grandeur (daring to dream of being 1st ruck and playing regular AFL football).

Graham comes to us on minimum wages and in the knowledge that he is nothing more than a "break glass in case of emergency" type player - should something happen to Jacobs.

We can't afford and don't need a high quality ruckman - Jacobs is capable of filling that role. We just need someone who is capable of doing the task to an adequate standard if our primary ruckman falls over. Graham fits the bill nicely.

As long as all that is really true, that all makes a lot of sense.

A proper backup ruckman does put that whole Jenkins/Smack as the backup ruckman to bed. In fact aside from filling in a KDP, kinda makes Smack look morel like tradebait, with Lynch and Johnstone looking for a game up forward.

Hmmm so pretty much you seemed to get Graham for the same reason he was on our list
Pretty much.

If it all goes well.Graham wont get a game in the next two years.

Had to chuckle when Noble.mentioned on AA he wants the Lead Ruck role. Hopefully this means he will be more than mere fodder for Sauce at training.

I know nothing about him, but it seems like we essentially got a backup Ruckman for free.

From what I can tell from this thread, he's not much good. Can anyone give me a quick description of him and his ability?

I guess it points out a few other things too:

1. The club doesn't see mckernan or Jenkins as anything other than pinch-hitters in the ruck, clearly not able to replace sauce should the unmentionable happen.

2. Unless either of the two mentioned above leave, I really can't see us getting Jesse white now. That would be completely pointless, as he wouldn't have a place as our 2nd ruck (now occupied by graham), or in our forward line. Hopefully this should put the "white + 22 for Tippett" rumors to bed.

That's pretty much it really, couldn't understand why all the issue with trading late draft picks for some depth.

Some pics of Angus playing in the VFL this season - you don't realise how big he is until you get close.
Super nice bloke who is very approachable. Will be a good club asset for whichever SANFL team gets him.

Also, for people to come out and call him an oxygen thief is pretty poor form. Call it a dud trade or call him a spud footballer if you must but to have a go at the bloke himself, when he's done us no wrong, is pretty disgusting.
Couldnt agree more. The way so called Tiger supporters are bagging him is similar to the pathetic Port supporters bagging Chapman.

Gus is no way as bad as they make out. Might not be the greatest ruck going around, but in his favor he is a MASSIVE unit who takes an excellent contested mark, is a very accurate set shot, and in my opinion his best asset is his ground work in and around packs in a contested situation with terrific hands, also very good below his knees. His time was well and truly up at the Tiges, and i reckon he will come on in leaps and bounds with you lot.

Why the haters for this trade?

Graham was the Tiges' first ruck last year. He averaged 24 hitouts. He's just about the Tippett build. And the guy he's shrugging away in the middle pic looks like Hodge.

IMO, he'll make some sort of impact in '13, even if it's minimal.

Happy to give a run down on him

His ruck tap work is satisfactory and can generally compete with 80% of the leagues other rucks in this area.

Is probably one of the softest talls in the history of the game, will struggle against the crash and bash type ruck me, so therefore he is not the type of player you want to take into a final series. His lack of strength and aggression has been laughable over the years. Ir recall him being muscled out of a one on one in a vfl final by a guy who was about 7 inches and 15 kilos lighter than him.

Has below average speed, moves like giraffe on stilts, poor agility. Had no feel for the game down back and offers nothing in regards to midfield or around the ground influence.

Has showen glimpses of being able to drop forward and take a few marks and goals, as his set shot is quite good, but it all depends on the opponent. Against the dogs, port, roos & gws I could see him doing this, but against collingwood, cats, swans & hawks , ext to no chance.

If you had told me 3 years so that Richard tambling would have to be delisted to facilitate room to keep Angus graham on the list, I would have a probably thought Greg miller had returned and was dead set on finishing his job at smashing the tigers deep into the grave. The fact it's happening at the crows right now is just weird.

Will watch with interest to see how he develops. Sanderson seems like the kind of guy that can make anyone tough, well this is the ultimate case for him

Agree with everything there except his tap work. He just palms it to his feet, he hits the ball with no aim or purpose. Something I found infuriating with him.

It was pretty clear that we were going to need another genuine ruck backup for Jacobs, personally I was happy to rookie list a state league ruck, but the club obviously feels they'd rather have one on the main list and that they'd rather not wait until the draft.

As a back up for Jacobs he's probably ideal, cheap, but capable of stepping in when required and allows McKernan and Jenkins to focus more on their KPP work. Although I do think McKernan would be more than capable of holding down the first ruck role if required.

I think the SANFL may help develop Graham. I was upset about the trade as it seemed White was in play too.

I have worried a lot this season about our ruck depth and how we keep a viable option on our list but play him in the SANFL all the time. But the good thing is if Jacobs has a niggle, we can rest him for a game strategically. He seems to have the right attitude. And the new ruck rules put everything up in the air again.
