I just hope there's more strategy to this than "the members like Carr so that should shut them up"

At least he's a winner and coaching under Longmuir would have helped.

I'll be happier is a succession is announced.

I think we are a bit obsessed with bringing past players back to coach rather than looking for the best option.

Gunna need more than Carr to get Hinkley close to a premiership
Getting Carr is not about getting Hinkley closer to a premiership.

I still maintain that Bassett will be the SANFL coach and if that's what does happen, I think it's an excellent move- both for the AFL program and the Magpies. Only my opinion, but I think Bassett is far better suited to SANFL Senior coach, than he is AFL line coach.

We still need to find some more coaches. Voss, Schofield gone now Monty and Lokan

Coach Hinkley
Senior Assistant: …….
Def chad
Mid Carr
Fwd: ………

Reserves: Bassett

Unless I’ve missed something

Ginever reckons it's Goldsack for the SANFL job so Bassett still there with Donuts in that scenario.

I thought that Carr was recruited to be the senior assistant.

PORT Adelaide has secured midfield coach Josh Carr from Fremantle after headhunting the former Power player as a senior assistant to coach Ken Hinkley.

I’m the only person here that probably thinks Bass is a good coach full stop and would be much better than Ken. People raving on in the media about Carr and North premiership when Bass took Norwood to 3 GF’s in 4 years winning 2. He’s got more cred in running his own team than Ken and Carr hasn't he?

The whole discussion around assessing the performance of individual assistant coaches based on on-field results is pointless. Ultimately the coaching group as a whole, led by Hinkley, set the game plan for defence and attack. And the performance of the backline is so dependant on how the mids are playing it is impossible to know whether the defensive line is the problem or the midfield. And it is the same for the forward line.

It's not a easy as just saying "the forward line is crap so Bassett is crap" or "the midfield is ok so Montgomery is doing ok". All you can really say is that in general it is all crap and the coaching group as a whole are not performing.

One thing I do strongly believe is that coaching turnover is a good and necessary part of a well run football club, almost regardless of on-field performance. You need fresh ideas and IP from other clubs. The players hearing the same message from the same guys year after year gets stale.

And as such, I'm happy with Montgomery leaving. Ideally Bassett would also go, but him moving into the Magpies role is probably a satisfactory outcome. I wasn't entirely happy with the Cornes appointment but I'm happy to see him continue for a while longer.

However if you are going to move on coaches you need to actually bring in outsiders. We don't need more "internal promotions". That's just cheap. We need a full coaching group and we need fresh ideas. I don't want to see Goldsack or Sutcliffe or whoever else being promoted to a line coach.

The problem was that in winning those premierships he played the most dour, boring defensive football possible and there is no way that would hold up in the AFL. We've seen a bit of it at times with Port and it has been ghastly. I don't mind Bassett. But there are question marks about if he actually knows how to run a successful AFL game plan that has a sufficient balance between offence and defence.

All of this is completely moot whilst the head coach is still a certified moron. I just finished watching Chris Scott's press conference from last night. It couldn't be any clearer why they're a great club and we're a shit one. Leadership is chalk and cheese.

Perhaps, but it's his style most don't like. Very defensive minded.

Carr is seen as an attacking coach.

Anyone will do at this point, however.

We gotta bring in Schulz in some capacity into the club and instill some good goal kicking techniques into these games. We never make the most of our opportunities and he's offered to help several times
Schulz would be very brave to give up a safe job in Tassie to work under Ken.

Maybe just maybe, Monty did a deal for us to pick his son. Coach and son Schofield did not work

I think we made that position redundant last season. Hinks took on more responsibility.
