I'm starting to think who are we seriously going to get who will want to come to Collingwood under Buckley?
Especially when pressure will be extremely high.

We won't be attracting any high quality assistants…therefore you wonder what difference more poor quality assistants will achieve with our current coach?

The other ironic thing is we have assistants who have more qualifications than Buckley does from a coaching stand point…
Wow.
UMMMM . . . . what part of NOT a buckley thread didn't you get??????
JEEZUZ I'm sick of one topic posters at present.

I have no idea about the quality of Assistant Coaches.
Is there any on our staff that you believe are worth keeping.
While I am at it. Why all the hype about Hodge.
I'd like Hodge for his experience and obvious leadership qualities (sans his slip ups with drinking)

But really it's only based on him going through a successful era.

Closer to the truth is we don't really know who is good or bad in coaching, we look at the scoreboard and then just use that. Ofcourse sometimes it's glaring someone lacks any authority eg Neeld, Rhodes, Britain
Has player issues eg Watters
The rest well how do people really know.

Does one put cones out nicely in a very straight line?

And assistants generally move a bit to build CVs

I'm very confident we'll get a few nice ones, just like all clubs.

But don't worry, once any assistant leaves Collingwood they suddenly become an outstanding assistant.

He is the forward line coach, we have the worst functioning forward line in the comp. We get plenty of the ball in there but have one of the worst stats for turning fwd50 entries into goals.
That's true.

But let me know when you see a strong key forward there?
That and accuracy kills us.

I have one golden rule, if a player gets the ball and can't kick to target, they aren't being coached to do that.

Heaven help us if Elliott was out for long periods.

Hopefully Moore takes more steps forward.

Also makes a huge difference with Wells there, just is accurate in passing, makes good decisions quickly.

I know it's only basic instructions, but this is not the Buckley thread.
There are plenty of those.

Besides lots of assistants would go to Collingwood.

To start.
So you saying that potential assistants would rather be unemployed than work for Collingwood?
How ridiculous.

This may escape you, but assistants are in the system to learn, coach, improve their CVs.
Their brief is work with players.

This may also escape you, but it's highly likely many in the football clubs actually like Buckley. Doubt he meets a new assistant and is just rude to them. He's so off putting that an assistant says, nah, won't go there. How ridiculous.

Assistants would look at the opportunity, they may see players like Moore, De Goey, Maynard, Grundy, and think potential there.

Just because you have a Buckley fetish doesn't mean every assistant coach out there has the same fetish.

Harvey would have to be the most overrated coaching employee in the AFL
Besides Steve Silvagni

(As if I could ever resist such an opening to give overblown sos a great whack)

Yeah. I'd keep Rocca and Gotch. IMO, they possess the ability to say the word no to Nathan Buckley which will be the most important factor in his survival beyond 2017. If the club can surround him with a group that isn't filled to the brim with yes men he might actually be able to become a reasonable coach as opposed to the poor one he is currently.

I believe the fascination with Hodge is that he brings with him a tenacious will to win, the knowledge of how to impart that on others, he has a strong footy brain and is universally loved and respected. I'm in the yes corner with Hodge, but only if we make the right call and ditch Buckley. We're a weak club and won't sack him so he isn't a going to be a good fit because the club can't afford another guy learning on the job under Buckley.

By the way is Collingwood the only club where assistants move on?

Just wondering aloud

Well it's a quandry then because I don't see how bringing in a bunch of new no-name assistants is going to help much. Surely we seek out the absolute best available and really throw some $$ at them this time. We need assistants who have a real voice of authority and can meaningfully create improvement on their own rather than just be implementing what they are instructed to do.
Come to think of it... If Bucks has to be reappointed then I want coaching by committee to see if that can work. Will probably make a camel but we know we get an ass if it's all left up to Bucks, so worth a try.
No one has ever tried that actually... Could have a committee of say 3 head coaches.. all with equal say, and a mentor arbiter, 4 assistants, democracy rules. Coaching by committee...yeah I like it! Bring in leading teams to help the coaching team bond... Happy days

different sport but Liverpool tried the 2 manager approach years ago and it didn't work. Rule by consensus rarely works as it often operates on compromise.
I prefer the NFL method. A head coach who oversees the other coaches with position coaches reporting into defensive or offensive coordinators. On game day the head coach runs the show but in many cases the coordinators make the call on position and line-up changes.

Bring in Hodgey development coach
New Assistants - do we try for a Rattan? Poach other potentials from current successful clubs,Sydney,Adelaide,GWS?

why would Ratts come over to be asst coach. Particularly when Hawks are building a new era. And with Cam Bruce leaving it further enhances Ratten's standing as Clarko's right hand man.
It's like choosing between an Audi and a Holden (sponsor analogy is deliberate)

Yeah I know. Wouldn't mind seeing it trialled though.

Back when God was creating the earth and the universe and everything in it he was getting really bogged down in devising the mechanisms to insert the mathematical calculations of quantum physics into the mechanics of his creations... Anyway to cut a long story short it was really doing his head in, so he decided to delegate some of the minor detailed tasks of creation to a committee of angels. The first task he delegated was the creation of the horse.

God gave a detailed description of what he wanted and he imprinted this into the Angels minds. It was a beautiful Arabian stallion, one that would give Saintly a massive boner.

So the Angels got together and bickered and argued because as it turns out they all put an overlay of their own ego into the concise horse plans that God had given them. This is how the camel came into existence. The camel was the committee's first attempt at creating a horse, then came the moose, bison etc.. Lucky for many a lonely Arab that this mistake was made I guess.

Anyway in the end god had a massive melt when he saw what the committee had created and screamed "FFS why do I have to do everything myself!" and sacked them on the spot and had to work back late that night to create the horse himself.
True story.

sometimes you can delegate to the wrong person and they create an ass

Ummm…is this not an assistants coach thread?

So by virtue would these assstants not have to work under the senior coach- Nathan Buckley?

I would have thought the points I raised are very relevant at the moment in the scheme of things.

But hey, I'm sure you enjoy sticking to your rainbows and unicorns and fantasy.

We are in need of high end quality assistants- not just "assistants" to learn.

These types are not "available" readily. They'd need to be poached.
As an outsider looking in why would you leave a stable environment to join one as volatile as Collingwood's right now if you're a highly rated assistant?

Sure people may want to work at Collingwood- but if they're available, just how much quality would they have?
We can ill afford to have complete rookies when it's obvious we need quality. This may have escaped you.

Look at the people that have left under Buckley…2 are on record suggesting he is inflexible to the point that the working relationship doesn't work.
Nice guy is one thing…working with someone is another.

I love how protected the species of Nathan Buckley is.
He is very relevant to this thread of potential assistants are going to need to work with him- which on present history suggests he is very hard to work with.

Who were the 2 that spoke about him being inflexible on record?

It has just been said on the ABC sport's panel a minute ago that Burns leaving for Hawthorn says a lot about what is happening at Collingwood. Posters may excuse the move because of the need to pad out a CV etc but he's only been at the club for a short time and would surely have stayed if he believed the club was likely to achieve success next year. Symbolically the switch seems significant.

And we are by many in the media supposed to have the best midfield in the comp, if that was really the case the club l would think do every thing they can to keep him.
On paper they look good, on the field though they tend to run hard only one way

The midfield is looking alright at quarter time.
That's the problem, we have had many games were we look good at quarter time, then when pressure applied they start to go missing.
Like to see this for more than a quarter or two

That's one way to put a negative spin to it. The other way is that he is very quiet and didn't add a lot (fact)
Lol, a thread about people we hardly speak about all year
Can we start one about new media managers under Bucks?

This is apparently how Nathan likes it....

Seriously though, my biggest fear is we are going to bring in "new assistants"- (probably not high on quality but new nonetheless) and Nathan will still not listen or become flexible.
That could set us back even further.

So why did the Hawks seek out the services of a 'quiet man who doesn't add a lot'? And why does Burns want to leave?
