Ask yourself the question, if someone said to you pregame that despite losing Tarryn & LDU to injury, we’d still get the W, Larkey would kick 6 & JHF had 20, would you take it?

Absolutely I’d take it.

We were never going to blow them away. We just aren’t good enough. Take two of our most talented mids out mid game, just no chance. If you expected to belt them going in, well that was a mistake.

Positives:
  • JHF first win
  • Souv leading the coleman
  • Corrs best game for the club
  • Xerri really exceeding my expectations
  • Powell another 20 disposal game
  • Turner being quite influential when swung forward
  • Bonar was handy when he came on
  • Mahoney is so clean

Negatives:
  • Injuries to LDU & Tarryn
  • Game Plan. Inability to transition the ball from D50 fluently, we slow it down, give the opposition time to zone up & we don’t have players with the skill/speed to do it quicker. Rome wasn’t built in a day, I understand that the likes of Perez/Goater are likely to take the reigns but unfortunately they’re just not ready yet, which I can accept. Our game plan also invites pressure though by overposessing and not taking territory, which I won’t accept. That’s on the coaching.

First game I've been to in a good long while. Was great to see a win.

You forget what it's like to be at the ground amongst it all. I've missed it.

Will Powell - this guy is so smart and creative. Thought his play was the most impactful of our young crop.
Jhf - still needs to build his fitness base as blowing pretty hard at times and wasn't able to go with some players but Jesus is he a monster in the contest.
Ldu - I went just to see him and crunch... I hope he isn't one to be perpetually knocked around. He has the highest ceiling of out crop.
Bailey Scott - covers the ground better than anyone on the list. Wish he could execute.

We tried hall, Turner, Corr on Willie Rioli. No one could defend him. Will be a problem area for a while for us I feel.

There was an odd patch of game from midway through the third to three quarter time. We played a lot of possession football for no reward but no loss. Feel like it was the only period you could analyse because we hit targets. Chaos the rest of the game.

Lachie young has something. Just saying.

Turner
Lazarro
Scott
Hall
Ziebell
Walker
Young
Bonar

I came up with 8.

It’s a pretty good crack at it though not sure Bonar should be on the list. Pretty inconspicuous, but doesn’t do much wrong either.
I’d add Polec, who can kick but is stuck in 2nd gear

Paranoid about a loss, got the win, so exceeding expectations there.

We don’t know how to win, let alone bury sides yet.

JHF looked like putting us on his shoulders and carry us to a win when they were coming. He was huge I thought. Bleeding from the head suits him. The bloke who gut punched him should get 2 weeks. ******* mug.

Powell’s game was fine, good mixed with bad, lacking in confidence from being a late in and possibly not at peak fitness. Least of our worries.

Same old story with small forwards killing us. Bring in Atu to give us some dash also.

Walker is a liability with the ball. Competes hard in the air. Corr was good. JZ his usual hack it forward. No creativity in the backline.

Xerri has really come on. Goldy should of been traded if we plan on using him the way we are.

Larkey was good, left a couple out there.

LDU and TT stay on the park and we look a lot better.

A win, no matter how ugly, can build confidence in a young group which is important to where we’re at.

The Powell last minute in 2 weeks in a row is absolute rubbish. He is best 22 and should be respected as such for his own sake

Spot on

I’ve let it stew for a while. I think I echo what a lot of people have said before me in that you come away from something like that feeling like you’ve lost.

The reality is, we were in a no win situation coming into today, and that wasn’t a good feeling to have as a fan, so I can only imagine what it was like for some of the players.

I think we just have to keep looking for the positives, and getting to watch a special kid in JHF wear our colours always is going to be that positive.

Having said that, the inability to execute extremely basic skills, something which has dogged this club for well over a decade, it’s very frustrating.

When LDU got tackled and went pretty hard into the ground it was good to see Rioli make sure he was ok.

It's a tough game, but making sure your opponent is gonna be alright is even tougher. :thumbsu:
Yeah. It was all class. Great to see. I think Rioli checked a couple of times during the match.

We lost LDU and Thomas and Simpkin played nearly his worst game ever. I suppose it’s some sort of positive that we actually managed to win.

Jy was so ineffectual, we could have lost all three and probably have the same result. A rare occurrence over the last 24 months. He will bounce back.

Considering we are missing Cunners, Jed, Phillips and lost LDU and TT before half time I think the fact our mids held their own was a positive.

Xerri is a massive positive as well, he’s playing great at the moment.

Ford, Curtis and Steevo all had good VFL games.

Zurhaar’s way down on confidence at the moment, we need him firing.

I don't think you were at the same game the rest of us watched..

For some perspective, we started 2021 with:

52 point loss
59 point loss
128 point loss
41 point loss

We’re miles ahead of where we were at the start of last year, and last year ended up being a pretty exciting and promising year by the end of it.
Our next month is looking horrendous. We may have a percentage lower than 50% by then.

I am not trying to be overly critical. We all know we are 18th side and it will take time, but we are within our rights to expect progress. Based on our improved showing after the bye last season we were hoping for 8 wins. Right now it seems we’ve gone backwards.

The reality is we have too many blokes badly out of form. How we manage that every season under different coaches I don’t know. But the fact is 80% of the side look like they touched the footy for the first time in 6 months. Zurhaar is a perfect example. Still works hard but is nowhere near it.

To make the matters worse, we lost the two classiest players we had early in the game.

It’s got to be the ugliest win in my recent memory if not ever. But win it was.
