Am hearing from a few mates in the know that are Avid hawthorns supporters, that D Shiel is almost a done deal to hawthorn, this years first and J Ceglar to help fill there ruck void.

Getting Dunstan in isn't going to prevent us from taking Shiel, Setterfield et al, and they are all fairly different players with different skilsets. Add in Smith and that's a good combination of skill, speed and toughness.

Cripps, Shiel, Murphy, Setterfield, Dunstan, Dow, Kennedy, Fisher, SPS, Smith is actually quite a deep midfield with a decent age-distribution.

I have been having similar thoughts to you. The big forward line that doesnt get any shorter. Lots of heavy and hard bodies that play hard. Mixed with fleet of foot lads that evade tackles or beat them off. That is where we are heading.

Actually see a lot of parallels with the Eagles and our current squad - lots of intercept markers in defence and talented tall targets up forward. They also play a very deliberate controlled game but are capable of coming up with some skilful ball movement in attack. I think that was pretty much where our game plan was headed, and showed that in patches in 2016 and 2017.

The Eagles also have an incredible ability to recover after turning that ball over because of how capable their defence is and how hard their midfield works to get numbers back.

They don’t have many flashy mids, and guys like Redden and Hutchings and Sheed are all pivotal parts of their midfield despite not being especially skilled. A lot of it comes down to just consistently making good decisions. And speedy ball movement beats having speedy players. This is something Dunstan has shown he’s capable of.

He's a long, penetrating kick too is Dunstan, could be good, quick delivery to our forwards. Can be hit and miss though.

Sheed - SPS (not that similar)

They don't have anyone remotely similar to Cripps.

Not sure who else WC had running through...maybe a bit from Duggan/Ryan types.

Now i've gone for player type comparisons...obviously Shuey and Gaff are far above Dow and LOB at this stage but their ceiling is similar.
All those WC mids are 23+ though...imo ours stacks up well for talent just way too young atm to run out games over a season.

Get Shiel in and a healthy list and our midfield should be a powerhouse in as little as 2 years. Plus any additions on top of him in the years to come (eg Setterfield and/or Walsh).

In making a decision Shiel should be looking at things prospectively rather than retrospectively. Things can change very quickly and Carlton with Shiel is potentially a significantly different club for the following reasons:

1.Round 1 next year includes McGovern, Doc and Shiel;
2.If Shiel chooses us on the back of McGovern, another big fish or two will follow in due course;
3. 8-10 wins next year and a list including Cripps, Charlie, Doc, Shiel, McGovern will attract some momentum in terms of membership - 60k by 2020 and growing;
4.Our latent fan base will come back and once again we will have the G rocking with big crowds. It was only 5 years ago we knocked off Richmond in front of the loudest crowd I have witnessed.

We should not cower to the likes of Hawthorn and Essendon.

Hope Shiel can envisage this!

I think that pick 14 is worth more by itself. Adding Ceglar de-values the pick. Surely not enough to get the deal done. Ceglar is a spud
