Just thinking out loud, but * are notoriously difficult to deal with at the trade table.

I wonder if there's a possibility that their bark is bigger than their bite and they'll struggle to come to an agreement. I wonder, if that happens, if that could pave the way for other teams to get involved again.

Not saying it would or should be us, but is there any precedent for a player ending up at a different team to the one they nominate?

How about me

I posted yesterday morning that the Bombers were back in the hunt. I don’t think too many believed me. The key factor - I think - was GWS was pushing Shiel and Connors in their direction. That’s who they wanted to deal with once Shiel indicated he didn’t want to go to StKilda - they had the best “now” pick on the table. Hawthorn’s was too low and ours was 2019. I reckon from that point, Connors worked to convince Shiel that he could get him to Essendon with less fuss than either Carlton or Hawthorn. Essendon, for their part, had to up their $ offer which they did.

I reckon we could have become GWS “club of choice” - and perhaps, by extension, obtained Shiel, if we had put pick one on the table. I’m glad we didn’t and, in any case, he may have been reluctant to come to us given our ladder position

As for the quietness this morning, nobody knew anything. Shiel notified Carlton of his decision about 5 minutes before it was made public

Trade week is your time to shine EP. We love your contributions.

Why did they allow him to keep playing much of the year? Was it him pushing himself or bad advice by others ? Very curious on this. It reminded me of Dylan Buckley always seemed to have ankle issues but often still playing weeks after looking like needed an extended lay off. I hope those staff members most in control of both situations no longer there.
Probably was only going to be fixed with surgery which wouldve perhaps ended his season. Probably able to manage throughout year to a degree. He’s a great kid, should be a big difference to our mids group this coming season. Training with & learning off Cripps as well as doing a preseason & being fit will really see Matt improve his output.

Signed up as I needed to rant.

The plan was to go to the draft for three years which we've done - as it turns out, this strategy results in us having Pick #1, which really should be the perfect platform to use to now attract senior quality players. Lo and behold, the allure of another high pick sees us deviate from the plan and hold firm to go to the draft, yet again.

Irrespective of how good Walsh may be down the track, how anyone can preference him over an established mid like Shiel shows how defeatist we've become. Posters have praised us all year for not deviating from the plan, yet are now celebrating that missing Shiel guarantees us pick #1.

What will change next year when we have a top 3 pick with another strong crop on offer. No one was talking about Walsh 12 months ago, and guarantee there will be another Walsh next year. There always is.

We're never going to be contenders without being aggressive and moving away from chasing the best new kid in the land. We're going to enter next year with 4 number 1 picks/9 top 5 picks/12 top 10 picks/18 first round picks. We would have got something back for pick 1 if we offered it for Shiel - who knows, still possibly the best kid 5 years from now...

McGovern and Setterfield will no doubt be great additions, neither improves our need for mids in the 23-27 year age bracket that the club stated was the plan. If they are all we get, see you back here in 12 months in exact the same position, and no more attractive for the next 'Shiel' on offer...
It's not a dictatorship, Shiel gets to decide on this one. Easy to say in hindsight but may have dodged a bullet. We all want a big fish but I'm not sure Shiel is the right player to command 1.1 - 1.2 million.

If we had of got Shiel it would have been an amazing result given the fact we have come off a 2 win season with question marks over our coaches ability to be a successful AFL coach. Maybe 12 months to early to snag a player of that experience and caliber.

Regardless we have done well attracting two good up and coming players.

One million percent agree with this!

Somehow we have become the ‘accumulate No.1 picks’ club.

This year we get a No.1 pick that none of us has planned on because of how bad our season was, a bonus in a very bad year, and we act like we need to protect this No.1 pick at all costs as though the club plan involved having this pick available to us this year.
Once before we hit the draft 3 years in a row and then recruited a gun and that didn't work out for us. Shiel is not Josh Kelly and is not worth giving up a future gun for.

* fans lapping it up. TBF so would we.
Exactly. The cost is likely to bite them down the road. Shiel was worth no more than our single first rounder next year. The cost is heavy to have landed him in end. If we had a second pick around pick 7 this draft that would be what would have be willing to part with. We did not though so what will be , will be. Setterfield is a very good get in spite of this so swings and roundabouts.

It's a little ironic how it worked out, really. Setters nominated us which freed up some extra cash for Dons to throw at Shiel at the midnight hour. If Setters waited to nominate us after Shiel, we nab both of them.

Bitterly disappointed.
Still pretty happy to have gotten Setterfield. Our young midfield would have to be the envy of most of the comp.

Buggered if I’m reading all this mess but are people really bagging the club?? Because Dylan Shiel didn’t choose us?

What’s to say it wasn’t * all along and he’s played the other 3 clubs on their say so? Would it surprise you with them?

We had a crack, it sucks to miss out, we reload and go again.

We can’t go from having a ripping day yesterday to nowhere just because some ill informed bloke wants to wear red and black next year.

Nothing major but it does make for boring reading when all it seems to amount to is 'do anything to improve the midfield for next year or I'll implode'.

I appreciate there are 17 other clubs and you can't make a result happen just because you want it.

But has been alluded to, had we dangled pick #1 GWS would have pushed for Shiel to choose us and that very well may have gotten us over the line.

Equally, if we dangled pick #1 as being seriously on offer for an established mid heading into trade week, we might have had a few more knocks on the door...
I see your point, maybe it is a year too soon after only winning two games.. Maybe SOS didn't want to overpay in terms of trading when some better options could be available next season?

I believe he will hook a big fish in either 19 or 20, just need to be patient for now.

Spoke to Kennedy at the b&f.. he played with torn ligaments in his ankle from round 1, never got to recover.
He will be what we wanted, Big body support for Crippa

That's disgraceful player mismanagement if true.

Frightens me that our match committee including our coach would condone that.

Rather than any derogatory comments, we need to have a closer look at what Essendon is doing to become a “destination club”.

They are a doing something right.

Shiel, Smith and Stringer. Before that, Goddard.

It seems that the Essendon players meeting with Shield last week was a big deal for him, this is something that we should learn from? We should 100% not be sending Mr Pokies to any of these meetings in the future, that’s the old Carlton as are private jets. This may have actually put Dylan off.

You can have your Carlton blindfold on and give Essendon stick, call them names or get nasty, but they are doing something right. We need to learn from it and change going forward.

We should go hard for Lachie Neale.

We do not have the currency. Neale is not going for our 2019 first rounder and he is not worth pick 1 this year so good luck to Fremantle and Lions working out a deal there. That is one glad not involved in. Fremantle without a proper list manager now a nightmare to deal with this off season.

I reckon we have enough potential A Graders already on our list to not lose much sleep over Shiel.
Cripps/Doc - confirmed
Dow, Charlie - Likely
Weiters, Marchbank, McKay, Fisher, SPS, Willo - Potentially
Kennedy, LOB, Pickett, GOV, Setterfield - who knows
sure I've forgotten a few
2-3 yrs from now...….everyone will be wanting to join us.
