I'm not really fussed re Shiel tbh.
I just don't want to see Graham, Kerridge, Lang, Rowe types on our list anymore.

I don't even know if its worth chasing big fish, such as Kelly, Coniglio etc.
I'd much prefer to quietly attract some decent B graders like we have with Gov and like the Tiges did with Prestia/Caddy etc.
So who is available this season that fits the bill?

Wow if * genuinely offered what will end up being 2 mid-first-rounders for Shiel then bloody hell they can have him. We made the right call in not budging - there's no way he's worth that much.

A quick use of the points calculator shows that if * don't improve next year then that will just about be the equivalent of pick 1 - meaning we would have needed to offer pick 1 and get only Shiel in return to beat that.

If this is indeed the case, well done to the club, in spite of our need for experienced mids, for not caving and ridiculously overpaying here.

I’ve caught up. There was some epic melts but wisdom prevails we will live to fight another day. We where all so high yesterday, let’s not forget what we are bringing in.

Does this mean on field looks worst next year? Yep definitely. But does it mean it’s all over and we throw out not only the bath water but the baby? Nope. That would be child cruelty

This years and next years apparently

Spoke to Kennedy at the b&f.. he played with torn ligaments in his ankle from round 1, never got to recover.
He will be what we wanted, Big body support for Crippa

Why did they allow him to keep playing much of the year? Was it him pushing himself or bad advice by others ? Very curious on this. It reminded me of Dylan Buckley always seemed to have ankle issues but often still playing weeks after looking like needed an extended lay off. I hope those staff members most in control of both situations no longer there.

The plan was to go to the draft for three years which we've done - as it turns out, this strategy results in us having Pick #1, which really should be the perfect platform to use to now attract senior quality players. Lo and behold, the allure of another high pick sees us deviate from the plan and hold firm to go to the draft, yet again.

Irrespective of how good Walsh may be down the track, how anyone can preference him over an established mid like Shiel shows how defeatist we've become. Posters have praised us all year for not deviating from the plan, yet are now celebrating that missing Shiel guarantees us pick #1.

What will change next year when we have a top 3 pick with another strong crop on offer. No one was talking about Walsh 12 months ago, and guarantee there will be another Walsh next year. There always is.

We're never going to be contenders without being aggressive and moving away from chasing the best new kid in the land. We're going to enter next year with 4 number 1 picks/9 top 5 picks/12 top 10 picks/18 first round picks. We would have got something back for pick 1 if we offered it for Shiel - who knows, still possibly the best kid 5 years from now...

McGovern and Setterfield will no doubt be great additions, neither improves our need for mids in the 23-27 year age bracket that the club stated was the plan. If they are all we get, see you back here in 12 months in exact the same position, and no more attractive for the next 'Shiel' on offer...
You're missing the most important point which is that Shiel chose the bombers, if he nominated us we would of got the deal done. Same thing happened last season with D.Smith.

I would be picking up J.Bolton with our 3rd/4th rounder if we still have the pick/s. Kennedy will be into his 4th year and should really come on without injury. Same with Lang, he may not be the best footballer but can provide immediate support.

If we can somehow manage to win 8 games then we will have no trouble picking up talent next trade/FA period.

And can we not become a rabble when one decision doesn’t go our way? It’s amazing we were in the hunt with him for as long as we were. Hawthorn and Essendon were always the most logical calls for a bloke turning 26 and who has done the hard yards of a build from scratch already
Fair point EP.

Gov, Doc and fit players back, and organic growth from our kids, let see what sos can do

Buggered if I’m reading all this mess but are people really bagging the club?? Because Dylan Shiel didn’t choose us?

What’s to say it wasn’t * all along and he’s played the other 3 clubs on their say so? Would it surprise you with them?

We had a crack, it sucks to miss out, we reload and go again.

We can’t go from having a ripping day yesterday to nowhere just because some ill informed bloke wants to wear red and black next year.

Wah?

Next year we'll look better on the field than this year by a long way.

At this stage we're adding Walsh, Setterfield, McGovern and our second best player on the list into the side.

Oh well, he is a gun but what can you do. Setterfield and McGovern is still a decent trade period. Plus we will keep our pick 1 and next year's first too.

Not to mention a truck load of cap space for next season to hopefully try again at a big name.

You know, if/when we improve next year and hit the market for FAs/A-graders we arguably won't have to throw quite as many $$$ to lure them as this year (when they would be joining us at our worst).

I appreciate there are 17 other clubs and you can't make a result happen just because you want it.

But has been alluded to, had we dangled pick #1 GWS would have pushed for Shiel to choose us and that very well may have gotten us over the line.

Equally, if we dangled pick #1 as being seriously on offer for an established mid heading into trade week, we might have had a few more knocks on the door...

One million percent agree with this!

Somehow we have become the ‘accumulate No.1 picks’ club.

This year we get a No.1 pick that none of us has planned on because of how bad our season was, a bonus in a very bad year, and we act like we need to protect this No.1 pick at all costs as though the club plan involved having this pick available to us this year.

Nice selective quoting clearly I was saying we would look better on field with Shiel.

Then you missed the part about how I said it was no biggy.

Oh but that’s right you selected quoted me to exclude all of that
