So the deal smacks of desperation? Then you agree with my original point.
I've previously nominated numerous ways in which we could have navigated this if we weren't wedded to the idea of MM, but BB wanted him badly.
That's really not what I said at all, Jimbo.
Not desperation - simply the reality of the situation.
We rate McGovern - not sure why you're assuming it's all on Bolton, as undoubtedly there would have been input from Teague, Silvagni and Agresta as well.
He's only 23yo, which is young enough to be a long term player, and old enough to be able to slot into the side immediately and have an impact.
He was contracted at Adelaide for a further two seasons.
So yes, we overpaid a little, because that's what you need to do when you target a contracted player. But evidently we made that decision knowing full well what price we'd potentially have to pay.
And the price wasn't exorbitant. 2x second rounders. I really don't see much in the draft around the 25-30 mark to get all that excited about, and certainly nothing that meets our stated objective of bringing in best 22 players in the 23-26yo age range. Other options at the trade table? I'm not seeing any midfielders valued in the mid/late 20's who've been traded so far. And I'm not really seeing any being discussed.
So all in all - I think we made a calculated trade to bring in a young, talented player who will improve our forward line, using two second round picks which don't seem to be particularly well placed to secure a best 22 midfielder.
