What?! He lives in Seymour...His father played in Brisbane but that was it.

Cheers for that, but still, can you really play down that his father played for Brisbane? It's been reported he stated early on he'd "love to play for Brisbane" (although, if he was asked directly, you'd probably expect that). You seem to know a lot, zeeCFC, has he given indication somewhere else that it won't be much of a factor?

He has stated that he'd love to play for Brisbane. Haven't heard him say the same about us.

Think he said "It would be cool to play at Brisbane, finish what dad started".

That's a far cry from "It would be a dream come true to play for the Lions - if I could choose any club it would be them!".

Reckon he's played his cards pretty well - probably knew he was amongst the top 10-15 at the time, but in linking himself to Brisbane who were always gonna be down the bottom of the ladder, he's positioned himself as a strong candidate for the top few picks.

I accept he there is a link with Brisbane and he'll probably end up there but I think he'd be happy to forge a career in Victoria and will be happy with it if we decide he's worth pick 1.

Saying there's a 'go home risk' for him going to Brisbane is way off the mark though.

Just on recruiting and development, Kane Lucas clearly was a bust, but obviously I feel was clearly a drafting lemon, more than a player development one. It doesn't look like Lucas will get a game at a strong WCE outfit.

Our player development in the past few years of Cripps, Graham, Buckley, Holman has been much better, which is a start, this is a controversial thought, but I firmly agree with Mick's philosophy of making kids earn their stripes in the VFL (even if he probably took it too far with Graham)

Holman especially strikes me as a self-made footballer, who is/will succeed at AFL level by serving an lengthy apprenticeship and basically reducing any compliancy in his game to a minimum (a trait that's sadly cropped into Menzel's game)

We didn't our due homework into Kane Lucas and his attitude/work rate etc, something I trust we have rectified with SOS and McKay on board ...

This.

I think you can add Whiley to the apprenticeship list

Would rather we take Schache instead of Aish and #3.

I'm clearly in the minority but i just don't rate schache.

I rate him, but from what I've heard Francis would be a very good get too.

Effectively if you were to look at it as a trade it's Schache and say a pick in the 20-40 range for Francis & Aish.

Wonder how that would come out in the old AFL Traderoo scalamatic?

I still don't think, based merely on what he is quoted as saying in the press, that it's unreasonable to suggest that there's some go-home risk, but yeah, my wording in the original reply to PumpyChowdown was bad and more definitive than what was intended.

No player at Carlton has failed to make it because of poor player development over the years, they have just been no good. There are a few players at Carlton who are regular senior players who could perhaps be better because of player development. I think Gibbs and Kreuzer are two example, Kreuzer with his forward play and marking and Gibbs developed a lot when Malthouse arrived, Casboult's kicking is another example. Lucas was just a really poor quality football who lacked competitiveness which can't be taught. It's not as bad as people go on about but it was bad. I think our development has been fairly decent the last few years, it's just a pity that our VFL side wasn't a little better so we could give our forwards more of a go. We've recruited guys who have more competitiveness about them like Cripps, Graham and Holman and these are the sort who can be developed, they do have a go and have footy smarts and you can work with that. Main thing is that we pick genuine elite players and do it based on both ability and position played, not best available with our early picks and pick those competitive sorts who can be developed and worked on with our later picks.

I recon if we finish last we'll be getting an Aish or a Carlisle for free in the PSD you'd think so no worry about trading here. To get picks one and two, you'd bend over backwards for but can't see that happening. Lions have trouble retaining players and need to do more work in regards to personality screening and picking ones who will stay but can't see that influencing their first pick, but could see them bend over backwards a bit more for a guy like Bell if rumors are true.

We've had a few go at rebuilding right 2005 we took Kennedy and Bower, we off loaded Kennedy and Bower was a flop. This really set us back to starting position in regards to building a serious team. 2010 we took a whole heap of talls and they all failed. We've had the right idea at times but we've missed the mark in terms of quality. Get it right and we will get somewhere and that would be really really exciting.

The reputation of SOS will only last another year. We eat reputations. At carlton town!

I reckon the Carlton online community should lay out realistic expectations for SOS, the new coach, the board during this offseason so we can avoid the hysterical hindsight reactions after the fact.

Clearly in the minority... I watched him in a few games and kicked a bag of 5 or 6 and didn't even look like missing, his opponent kept getting lost while ball was in transition and Schaches movement was brilliant... Everyone entitled to their opinion but this 1 might come back to bite you :D Would prefer weiters though, kid will be a freak for us, could probably hold up the whole back line single handedly!! ( If we get him)

Silvagni looking to adopt similar tactic to that he used at GWS - obtain as many first-rounders as possible. If we land number 1 pick, we're then expecting pick 2 in compensation for Hendo. Will then be aiming for an end of first round pick in trade for Yarran.
Netting us picks 1,2,15-18,19 #bluemour

Hendo isn't a free agent so there won't be compensation.

I don't know how you can definitively say this. Yes some of it is recruiting but surely development has been horrid. Even now do you honestly think if Menzel had spent the last three seasons at Hawthorn he would currently be dishing up same quality of output. He would not have been getting games so he would have had to lift his work ethic.

This. It's been reiterated numerous times throughout the year and we're at the point where its getting annoying every-time I see someone make the mistake.
