But according to a few movies I've seen the hilarity factor will be off the charts...

Expect to see some steamy sexual tension between Bolts and Barks.

You didnt rate him as an assistant coach?, why, do you know him, are you inside the club? The reality is no one has any idea how good an assistant he was. As a senior coach hes been front and center and been very impressive

He's been impressive as a senior coach has he, do you know him?are you inside the club?
See i can do that too.
This is a forum where carlton faithful can discuss there opinions, if you disagree fine, that's the beauty of the forum what you don't have to do is be a dick about it.
Imo every line (forward and back) he touched suffered. This could be for Number of reasons but he was the common denominator at the time.

However as i said in my previous post he impressed me as a senior coach and maybe to develop him as a future senior coach the best roll for him could be vfl development coach.

You are deadset not well. :thumbsu::D

Maybe they just find a different role for him. It does sound ludicrous when you think of it. New employee in ... points to people and says ... you, you and you. Don't know you but your presence makes me uneasy. Fire them please.

Did Bolton and Barker work together at Hawthorn?
Yeah perhaps. I'd rather Bolton get in the people he feels comfortable working with though. If he thinks external people will best assist him in reaching his goal, so be it.

I do get your point though!

barker staying on is just good modern management approach. It's about time we embraced a collegiate approach.

Exactly. Carlton didn't explain it very well when they said this is what they are aiming for but it seems like a good idea and a little bit of a break from tradition.

Job security for performance creates a happy environment that people want to see.

I'm happy for him, but I think Bolton should should have a word if not the final one on whether he wants Barker to stay.
If they had committed to it during the caretaker process, you would have to assume that it was conveyed to all prospective coaches during the interview process.

I can see two sides to this "Should Barker stay?" question.

On one hand, he's done a terrific job (in my opinion) during this caretaker period. The players are obviously comfortable with him and he's gotten a lot out of the juniors--I'd love to see him in a development role. He could potentially be a good support to Bolton because he knows and understands everyone on our list.

On the other hand, I'm under the impression that most senior coaches choose their assistants, and Bolton and Barker may not be comfortable working with each other after having applied for the same job.

Hopefully both men are mature enough (and I really have no reason to think that they would be otherwise) to work together and get the best out of the team...that's all I can ask for.

Even more of a reason to get it right....Big job.

Exactly. Havent been much chop since 11.

The NBs need some serious resources.

Just not sure Barker would want to go back to VFL... though the VFL worked wonders for Boltons career

Gee, if Barker is the type to only take the top job after receiving guarantees about his future post-season, I'm pretty glad we didn't give him the gig full time. Doesn't say a lot about his ambition or confidence. (Yes, I appreciate that is a bit of a generalisation)

That said, if Bolton knew about the deal and is ok with it, there is on reason for anyone else to second guess it. Barker seems like a decent person and the players like him, so can't hurt to keep him. Who know, he and Brendon may have already discussed it.

It's getting warm in here...

Maybe it was explained to all aspirate coaches during the interview process. Just speculating.
It was actually announced by the CEO when the panel was appointed that the coach they select will come in and work within the footy department structure defined by Carlton, not the other way around.

Who seriously thinks that a 36 year old rookie coach should coming in and immediately tell the club what the make up of their whole coaching operation should be?

I thought we all wanted Carlton to be professional and progressive. This is a 1980s mentality.

I'm sure as the club moves forward with Bolton he will have a major say in who his support staff will be but hopefully this is always as part of a selection process that draws on different opinions and perspectives. That's the best way to identify coaching talent for the club.

Beveridge is using the existing assistants.

Is it official Barker has been guaranteed a position?

I can't imaging Bolton signing if he did know and wasn't happy with who he'd be working with.

Seems to be an push on here to think the worst of Barker . Maybe Bolton demanded Barker stays . Who the **** would know?

Barker has done a fantastic job.
Certainly hasn't dodged any of the tough calls or big decisions at selection. First steps to turning our culture around !!

Barker is coach Yoast and Bolton is coach Boone. I'm sure they will help the boys settle their differences and become a united, undefeated team.

I mean, there are rumours that Sunshine might be headed our way... Let the dancing and singing commence, I say.
One of the all time great movies :thumbsu:

Is there any intel on whether Fagan is coming with him? Would be a good get.

Fair point and he may have had an existing contract.....but it doesn't seem that way given what has been said.
Why guarantee for Barker to stay on? What happens if Bolton doesn't want him? Bad luck? Another payout? We haven't got money.

The other thing is that if some players favour Barker as coach, divisions can come into play....Last thing we need is more distractions.
Anyway, first things first, in announcing Bolton and let's hope (?) that it's only smooth sailing from here on in.
You've hit the panic button here Harks.

You don't let good football people go just because things might get "awkward" in the work place. We let Mick Malthouse pick his own assistants and he bought in his mates. Barkers a grown man seems like a decent one, if he feels bitter about not getting the job I'm sure he would put his hand up and say "I don't want to work in these conditions, I'm out".

It's clear the players love Barker and he love the club. He's had Carltons interest at heart all year, and did a good job communicating it when he could.

Barker stays if he wants to and the club wants to. Bolton is too fresh to be hand picking assistants anyway.

Can't work against us unless Barker tries to sabotage Bolton by sabotaging the team.

We have expressed a desire to keep good people at the club even if we find other positions for them. So you become an employee of the CFC who can fill various roles rather than just a coach for a contracted timeframe.

Maybe keeps the place positive and players get some continuity. It will be down to Barkers attitude. He never spoke of his ambitions and spoke club first during the whole process. He could be a Darren Crocker for us. Beats putting a broom through the place every time a senior coach fails.

I can see the sense in this especially with a first time coach. I mean, what does Bolton know about assessing other assistant coaches right now? He'd pick people he liked or some he admired as players and take a chance they can coach.

Besides, I'm guessing this is not a surprise to Bolton and he was aware before he signed.

Assuming the story is completely accurate of course.
I'm related to this guy.

When he took the interim gig there weren't really any other jobs going around. Phil Walsh was still alive, Hird was bullet proof, there wasn't really any heat on Buckley, there's already a succession plan in place at Melbourne, and GC and Brisbane have fairly fresh coaches that probably aren't going to be shown the door.
A lot of the time when an interim coach is replaced, the rest of the coaching staff gets swept out for a fresh start. Why wouldn't you want some kind of assurance of job security?

I suppose because you are backing yourself to get the gig and you might lose your job under a new coach anyway. Unless he never really wanted it and only wanted to keep his old job, in which case I'm still happy he didn't get the gig.

Anyhoo, whatever I think about BArker as a coach, he's proven himself to be a well spoken and decent bloke who the players love... Footy clubs need to keep those kind of people

For me: It's not so much about whether Barker or Bolton are professional enough to get along. That won't be an issue.

But what about players that wanted Barker to stay? Look at MM when he said Collingwood players came to his office saying they would basically mutiny the club if he left and Buckley took over.

I doubt the players will be vindictive, but the players don't own the club. Nothing to do with being 'progressive' either.
