we need him to turned matches our way and on the sort of money he commands he has to not every week but certainly more often than he currently does. I agree with the chief he is a complacent footballer and has been since saying "premierships will not define me" his very words that says much about his mindset IMV and the reason I never want him as captain.

Unless he pulls his finger out we are stuck with his output he really needs to take a good look at himself and find the desire to compete again, sometimes dropping a player is good for them. People thought I was joking when I suggested he might need a run in 2s he looks like he is just going through the motions atm.

Putting the money to one side, what do you guys think of Brodie as a player? Is he any good? Where do you rank him among the league's ruckman?

The salary is what it is and quite frankly it’s a boring argument. It’s really the length of the contract rather than the annual effect on the salary cap that I have some issues with but we can’t change that.

To regain AA standard is the ideal but realistically speaking we need him to be somewhere near that… even if he doesn’t quite reach those heights. He needs basically to catch the ball more… both contested and uncontested… and that will instantly improve his disposal efficiency because kicks taken after marks give you more time to hit the target.

As a ruckman and ruck/clrearance beast he’s still doing his job very effectively

The salary is a boring argument, except when it comes to the art of list management. The angst is going to go through the roof if we can't afford De Goey. Really, I think the club probably made a misstep on Grundy, but I understand at the time he was probably the number 1 ruck in the game. The length of the deal here plays a role because the game changes so quickly and players get bypassed pretty fast. No one can predict what it'll look like in 5 years. Like, 5 years ago, the keepings-off style was the number one style. That's an aeon ago.

I think it’s fair enough that questions are being asked about his form. With a bit of luck he reads it & pulls his finger out.
A fired up Grundy will make us better.

Hopefully the Media gettting Stuck into him will make him play Better as get Motivation

The salary is important, because you expect more from your highest paid player. If Grundy was on 400-500,000 then his output in recent years would match it and he wouldn't cop anywhere near as much.

You expect any player earning a million a season to be a genuine match winner and Grundy is not. He gets a lot of hitouts that usually go nowhere and that's it. But to the Supercoach generation he is awesome...

Grundy going at 7% effective tap outs to advantage
You might want to re-check your maths. According to that table, he is above most of them in terms of percentages - Pittonet surprisingly is extremely high in terms of HTA% and Witts very high in both hitouts and hta. Those stats suggest that Grundy is probably second to Witts in terms of ruckwork this year.

not when you factor in the amount of ruck contests he's had compared to others, besides witts

Those stats are good. You misread them. Good hta percentages in terms of both contests won and overall contests. They really should look at differentials though rather than just percentage won. Him getting to more ruck contests is a good thing, it has enabled us to play only 2 tall forwards in most of our games, rather than having the liabliity that is our 3rd tall. Grundy's workrate to get to so many contests and the flexibility that creates is an underestimated part of his contribution. He's not worth top dollar, but he's still a valuable player.

Ideally you over pay during the window and then cut costs during the rebuild with youngsters, that's why long contracts don't work, Grundy is 32/33 when our next window genuinely opens, it's a miscalculation regardless of his form at the moment.

I know he's still a good player, it's just been a couple of frustrating years, hopefully he can turn it around

I'll frame it another way, which ruckman in the leauge are better than him?
For purely ruckwork: Witts and Nicnat if he wasn't so unfit.

For contribution after the ruck contest: Gawn is the best by a mile. English probably has Grundy covered, Jackson will soon.

So third best ruckman in the leauge in your opinion.

The irony of that will be how just a month ago Collingwood supporters wanted de goey gone. Now he’s playing well all the talk has quickly returned to how we can retain him.

Besides, not sure how the length of the Grundy deal stops us from signing DeGoey next year. His annual salary whilst high, is not that high that we can’t retain players. We have cleared a lot of cap overhang in recent years so the extra 100-150k that Grundy is allegedly overpaid shouldn’t create an insurmountable cap problem.

His tap work in the last quarter was crucial to us nearly winning the game.

Oh nearly winning the game…..I’m glad that’s where your ambitions lay.

Maybe had he done some of those things that I mentioned, during the game we would have won instead of nearly winning.

I don’t think you actual understand why we came back and almost won. Watch the game again and we might go through a pop quiz. If you’d like.

Not quite with the comparative. We Witts gets it to his mids. Grundy mostly gets it to himself. Remember he taps stat. He gathers stat. He tries to dispose of it with his efficiency stat. And finally he mostly turns it over. Circle complete.

The maths wasn’t right though.

I’d add Nankervis to that list for sheer brutality at the contest. Sometimes you just need a Clark Keating 30m punch out of the contest. And not for much else as Grundy has him mostly covered.
