We were PUTRID last night.

Nobles presser was spot on. He is no dodo.

I’m coming to the realisation we simply have a stack of young C-D grade footballers that for some reason, are not progressing. It is shattering as a hard-core NM fan to see where we are. Maybe our current playing group is just not AFL standard, and never will be…….

It might be like Australia playing Holland in Test cricket and the Dutch coach is trying to implement plans to knock the Aussies off. No matter what he does, it ain’t happening because his players are so much inferior.

I’m interested to see what response the players provide next week. Sadly, I’m not expecting a great deal because like the Dutch cricketers, no matter how hard they train or how hard they try, they’re not going to trouble their more talented opponents.

Yes spot on.

If you take it that a player takes 4-5 years to be established from the Draft we are looking at you 2016-17-18 Draft…and our Coach was..?

The defence is the biggest issue
It’s old, slow and can’t string 3-4 kicks together to give the team some respite up the wing
It can’t intercept, apart from McDonald when opposition is not moving it quick
The team knows that’s once the ball goes in there we are stuffed
Any sports team no matter what’s the sport needs a defence that gives some confidence
If it’s young, confidence it will get better
If it’s old and terrible, its like driving a car with 3 wheels
How we’ve left our defence to rot and wilt to such an extent is an indictment on everyone at the club

I have a lot of faith in our young blokes, it's the senior ones that don't quite hit the mark for me.

I know the ages aren't exactly comparable, but 5-6 years ago our senior players were guys like Boomer, Petrie, Firitto, Thompson, etc. and the equivalents now are Goldstein, Ziebell, Hall, Polec, Walker

Goldstein is a gun obviously, but I just feel that the others are a bit off the mark

Posted this on another thread and it's an exact C+V

Not saying history is going to repeat completley but...
This was a game in Fagan's second year. No goals until late in the third quarter

By the end of the year they didn't look horrible and we know what happens. Just asking for some people not to be so reactionary and just chill. We don't need a 4th coach in 4 years

This is very true, had to flush out some average emerging/senior players to. Mayes, Cutler, Bewick, Taylor, Walker (sorry).. even rockcliff, Robertson and more in that line up - all gone or not getting a game by the same time next year. You had several in that bracket last night. A lot have said this, but you need to cut the deadwood and drop them, never to play again, tomorrow.

Also got Neale, McCarthy and Adams (2 of which were not playing footy due to injury) in and they have been 3 of our 5 best players this year. So a bit of looking outside the box interms of injecting senior players in to our side for a low cost (bar Neale).

The issue I see for you guys is we went to a top 4 finish and a semi final the next year - and I think that is probably not the trajectory for your list right now, it will take a bit more time.

All I know is Noble was as much a game day coach in the box as he was administrator. We attribute 50% of our succsess to him at the Lions, along with Fages. He was basically co-coaching.

When you got him I said, “if he can’t do it, no one can”. He is even tempered, intelligent, likeable and he knows every inch of a football program.

I know it’s frustrating right now, he just doesent have the cattle.

Took no pleasure in last night as we still have scaring from a decade long era of similar performances, you guys touched us up a bunch of times in that period.

Get a grip. Brisbane and many others have been here before during their rebuild.

It’s seems to a first time experience for many on here.

Well yeah, you have a point there. Remember when Laidley said we couldn't afford to rebuild? Turns out it wasn't economic. Turns out it was the impatience of a number of supporters.

We’re not getting near the swans next week , so it’s a great opportunity for nobes to make a statement.
Drop the skipper - he’s unbalancing us in the backline.
And drop polec forever - what a bad role model he is for the younguns. Soft and not interested in being out there.

Jess Sinclair (who was with Ben Robbins as they were leaving) - ''Hey Simmo you coming with us to get a coffee?''

Adam Simpson - ''Nah I gotta stick around and take bullshit photos with supporters''

Said that in front of 50 odd north supporters outside the old change rooms after an open training session. I couldn't believe it and those around me were shocked. This was the captain of the football club. I've heard similar things from others regarding players at open training during the early 2000's. David King was another pig in that regard.

Drew Petrie who would have been no older than 19-20 at the time was the polar opposite and had time for everybody.

And was always like that in his time at North......you'll never hear/read people say a negative thing about Drew Petrie.

I think if you are calling someone a pig of a person based on one loose comment then you are being awfully quick to judge. You may also find it hard to choose a new coach if your main criterion is that he must be as nice as Drew Petrie. That's a pretty high bar and also has no connection with coaching. And also, I haven't met the man but I'm told David Noble is one of the nicest people you would ever meet.

If you want the clearest indication of where we are.

Our best Ruckman is Goldy. Every game where we play him in the forward line the focus is not really winning. It is on getting kids through while keeping what senior players we do have out there.

Brace yourselves there is more pain coming as this transition is protracted.

FWIW I still believe we will not win the spoon this year. The back half is going to be better than the first.

After sleeping on it, last nights loss was mostly in between the ears. You can teach skills but we were clearly not out there to win.

It’s up to the coaches to get them mentally ready, every game.
Rubbish.

That is so far from the reality of the situation its not funny. Do you seriously think if last nights 22 players were "mentally ready" that we would've beaten Bris??? We still wouldn't have got within 10 goals. Come on Horizons_00, you're better than that.

Make no mistakes, this is a long journey that we're on.

The talent discrepancy between us and the next worst side is extreme. You look at Adelaide as a comparison of a young side that's outperforming us, but it'd be bloody nice to have guys like Ben Keays, Matt Crouch, Rory Laird, Jordan Dawson, Brodie Smith, Rory Sloane and Tom Doedee running around for us. Who are our best three or four in that age group? Luke Mcdonald, Aaron Hall, Aidan Corr and Greenwood? It gets pretty grim after that as well. And that's a comparison with a side that'll be lucky to get out of the bottom four or six.

Melbourne had six players play in both Round 1 2016 and Grand Final day 2021. There was a ton of fat on that list, but they also had guys like Clayton Oliver, Max Gawn, Christian Petracca, Christian Salem, and Angus Brayshaw. We're hopefully on a similar journey. There could be as many as 35 players on our list that don't survive the next 5-6 years, but when we look back at this year hopefully we're thinking of our own band of young players that used this period to develop into players that you could depend on to win a premiership.

Noble may not be the best tactician, but if he can keep morale high and get the boys to keep fighting through these dark days then he'll have done his job. I wouldn't be surprised if Noble was humble enough to understand his role here as well. When it's time to push up the ladder I could easily see him stepping aside and taking a more behind the scenes role.

It is pretty funny, very few coaches have a smooth ride to success, a number of successful recent coaches were almost on the chopping block before the sides clicked into gear.

I have the same kind of warning signs I had with Brad though, poor skill levels, no real system of moving the ball or retaining the ball. I'd say actually we are in a worse predicament than Scott was in, we at least had Wells, Harvey, Swallow and had recently recruited Cunners, we also had a number of players who came out of the blocks firing like Harper, Black, etc... even if they didn't make it, we got a lot more out of them in their early years than most of our young players are producing atm.

Aside from Goldy, our senior players are shit, the only guys over 25 that are of a decent quality is Cunners who wasn't out there and Goldy. The others will play some good footy now and then but it is almost zero leadership.

It really wasn't helped with Cunners, Anderson, Thomas, LDU and Phillips being unavailable, however, the greater concern is the standard those who are fit and healthy are playing to, it is not like this performance was a surprise, we have been flatter than a pancake so far and not sure why.

Remember Harvey asking more of our youth at this time? We had the opposite problem - a strong senior group without the youth supporting them. Now the kids are here and they're the leaders and they're found wanting.

Firrito wasn't even a top 4-5 player for us - he was around the Kayne Turner mark now. But my god he always had a dip and was a leader. You wouldn't want to drop your standards playing alongside firrito.

Couple of thoughts...

This is the recession we had to have... but it is an existential threat? I'd be asking for that priority pick.

We always looked well drilled coming out of defence under Scott with the run and gun. Sometimes it worked beautifully... and sometimes we would be badly punished. With a moderate sprinkling of talent you could still see some nice passages of play.

I haven't seen this under Nobes.
