Boyd has had an outstanding year, No1 in the comp for clearances can he get up and win?

Maybe top 5 but i dont think he has any chance to win the brownlow because this is the first year hes established himself as a gun of the competition.

Cooney won last year because he polls more easily due to his name. Hes the first player that come to mind for most neutrals when the dogs have won.

Has been our most consistent outstanding player all season and we did win 15 games. He has been in the engine room all year and always in the play. Lake will poll a few but very hard from full back to get too many. Might be an interesting count.

He certainly can. His stats suggest he's a huge chance.

Interesting that a bookmaker on SEN yesterday said there'd been "a flood of money for Boyd, he's in from $250 a couple of weeks ago to $16 today".

A couple of others out there obviously think he can win, too...

That is the Kiss of Death for Boydy!

Every year the Bookies 'Leak' who has been heavily backed only for them to struggle to poll well.
Be suspicious of a bookie leading us to back some-one!

I would be looking at the umpires fav's in Judd & Goodes with Judd getting the nod as they made the 8 this year & no-one to take votes off him.

Fair point!

Anyway, who'd back him now, seeing as the good odds are gone?;)

I dont no where to start?

it will be a disgrace if goodes wins again
hes been a great player in the past but come on, it hurt to see him take it off scotty west a few years ago when i thought westy deserved it so much. and i just hope like hell he doesn't win this year cause he hasn't been THAT convincing..

I think Boyd has a chance and I put ten on him but for me Reiwoldt is the one. Or maybe a another saints player. They won 20 games which means they are going to get a heap of 2 and 3 votes. Seeing as Revolt is the AFL's current golden haired boy I think he will win. Another thing that has me leanign to him is the fact that everyone says a forward or defender can't win the medal. I think the umpires might use this year to umm correct this perception.

I see Boyd as no realistic chance. Remember the umpires cast the votes and Cooney will be the leading vote getter at the Dogs.

I expect Dane Swan to win. He has had a very good year accumulating possession and the tatts will help. He will also get assistance from the reasonable year of the other tattooed Da(y)ne in Collingwood Colours (Beames).

I have been saying that Boyd is a smoky since about round 14.
He is a definate chance of winning it and I am willing to punt some money on him. No. 1 for clearances, averaged 28 disposals the last 8 weeks and in the top 10 for most inside 50's I think, he has had an outstanding year.
What I think will happen
Boyd 22 votes
Ablett 20 votes ( runners up again) cries and bellows all night long hahahaha!
Judd 19 votes
Black 19 votes
Goodes 16 votes
Riewoldt 15 votes
Go Boydy!!!!!!!!!

The Brownlow goes to a midfielder from a club inside the top 8 (usually top 4 now). It's definitely not a "fairest and best in the league" if ever it was that.

2008 Cooney (mf) WB (3rd on ladder)
2007 Bartel (mf) Gee (1st)
2006 Goodes (mf) Syd (4th)
2005 Cousins (mf) WCE (2nd)
2004 Judd (mf) WCE (7th)
2003 Ricciutto (mf) Adel (6th)
Goodes (mf) Syd (4th)
Buckley (mf) Coll (2nd)
2002 Black (mf) Bris (2nd)
2001 Akermanis (mf) Bris (2nd)
2000 Woewodin (mf) Melb (3rd)
1999 Crawford (mf) Haw (9th)
1998 Harvey (mf) StK (6th)
1997 Harvey (mf) Stk (1st)
and so it goes on with Voss & Hird (96), Kelly (95), Diesel (94)

It's only when you get to Wanganeen (back pocket, 93), Scott Wynd (ruck, 92) and Stynes (ruck, 91) that the pattern changes. Of course Grant should have got a brownlow in '97 if it weren't for Collo intervening and should also have got one in '96 if the Bulldogs hadn't lost to Essendon by 3 points in the final round... see below.

When I was a kid (a fair while ago now) they used to award 3 votes to the best player on the ground. So blokes like Skilton who hardly ever played a final won three Brownlows. That was because they were recognised as good players no matter what the score. Somewhere along the way (I reckon it happened in the 80s) the media started saying things like: "well, I'll give three votes to xx because his side won" and then: "well, I thought yy played a great game but you can't give three votes to a player in a losing side" etc etc. This was just a BIG CON (or at best an exercise in sheepish groupthink as DR might say). No longer was it about the best (& fairest) player - it was about who on the winning side should get votes.

So fast forward to the final round of 1996, Footscray v Essendon. Close game throughout, doggies in front close to the finish. Grantplays a blinder. Hird also plays very well. However Essendon get the winning goal and home by 3 points (or thereabouts - memory is a bit hazy on exact details). Come Brownlow night Hird gets 3 votes and Grant gets 2. Hird shares the medal with Voss and McKernan (disq) on 21 votes and Grant is the forgotten man on 20 votes. If the last goal had hit the post it probably would have been Voss and Grant sharing the medal.

So, like the RS award, folks, the Brownlow is just an opportunity to trot out a few celebs and low cut dresses, and to stretch out the media circus and ratings a little bit further.

Enjoy it but don't take it too seriously.

FWIW I reckon Boyd will get about 16-17 votes and finish about 4th but I'd still be very happy for him if he won it. Riewoldt is a chance to break the midfield stranglehold because he's exceptional (and blond) but otherwise it's between Swan and Ablett.
