I believe Lucas's traits might transition better to AFL level than Ben's
Think we're getting two very good players.

Everytime I watch Ben I find it hard to believe hard far he's slid.

His hands at ground level are absolutely elite. He's as good around clearance as any of the top 5-6 plus great at linking up around the ground. Yes his kicking is worse but most of the top 5-6 this year aren't elite kicks themselves.

Really should be a teens pick. Reckon he ends up top 5 from this class.

SA MVP, All Australian, SANFL Under 18 MVP (BOG in every game he played). Futures Game Medal Winner, Top 3 for possessions in both academy games.

Yeah very interesting. I also find it hard to believe how far he's fallen.

He was rated quite highly and then has backed it up with a great U18 year. Seems odd to me, but I'll happily take it!

He seems to have fallen down the order whilst not playing. Always a better sign then a player sliding while they are playing. :tearsofjoy:

It is definitely his kicking which is the knock on him. I don't claim to be any expert on the subject but it doesn't look to me to be fundamentally flawed and I suspect it could well improve significantly in a full-time professional environment. Also if he is to be an inside mid the kicking weakness is less problematic than in a role where he might be kicking with time and space more often. Will be a value pick for us IMO, as will Lucas albeit later.

I'd say his kicking is fundamentally flawed which is the reason it's such a knock. His ball drop and point of connection is out of whack

There’s a bit of a likeness in Ben to Ed Curnow’s kicking action and effectiveness, particularly early days before he improved his ball drop and overall quality throughout his career…

I think it may be more similar to Ben Johnson from Collingwood. While his ball drop was a bit awkward, his kicking was relatively effective nonetheless.

Agreed. Very happy he's slid but I do wonder how it's possible.

He's way better than a late 30s pick on pure footballing ability. Being able to find the pill is so underrated by recruiters it drives me nuts. They get lost in their spreadsheets.
