How good was Ollie Henry here? 2 on 1 in the marking contest and if the ball got over the back the Crows would've rebounded, yet he still managed to get the ball down to the front of the pack to two loose teammates.

He was much improved on last week’s (cameo) effort.

Someone noted OH skirked a couple which I also saw. He will get worked on for that.

But I'm not sure I'd want the ball with anyone but him or Jez taking a shot at the end of a close GF.

I’m fine with that. Holmes did the same and my immediate response was outrage but then I thought about it. Imagine he did go for that ball and gets smashed missing a month of footy. I reckon the coaches have said to some of the lighter framed players no point getting flattened and missing a month or more when there is no benefit in that particular contest or you will get cleaned up. Particularly with new concussion rules.

Footy is changing, we might see more players ‘shirking’. If it means they stay on the park that’s okay with me.

Wrong Ollie?

I know we're only 2 games into our season, but one player where there seems consensus that is already having a better 2024 than they did 2023 is Kolodjashnij - and this may raise a couple of eyebrows, but I think that is at least in part due to Ratugolea moving to Port

In 2022 we were playing a defensive structure that consisted of SDK as our main KPD and JK as our second KPD option - he had more of a set role, and knew what his focus was each week

Last year, especially in games where we played all 3 of SDK, JK & Ratugolea, it was JK who was shifted to the third tall option or even a mobile medium forward, and while he had some success in that type of role when he was younger, he has bulked up over recent years to play as more of that KPD option

This year in a limited sample size he seems to have gone back to that 2nd KPD role, a position he looks more comfortable playing & is backing himself with the decisions his making

I'm hoping he takes some confidence out of these first couple of matches, as he's not just playing "solid" football but having a positive influence in our defensive unit

Early days in terms of season 2024, but I'm liking the look of our defensive group, how they're working together & backing each other up - yes there's improvement to be had, but good signs:

Round 1 - 44 inside 50s for 23 scoring shots
Round 2 - 66 inside 50s for 22 scoring shots
I would suggest that as much as he is benefitting from Sav out, it is more due to J Henry being back. His versatility and poise lets the rest of the backline fill their best roles. Sav did not allow this, and his role overlapped too much with Kolo’s.

Funny how all the howlers went Adelaide's way though, huh?
This is not unusual though. This always happens to a club playing interstate. Home teams always get the rub of the umpires (it happens in most sports). Other teams would argue that it happens when they play against us at KP.

It is infuriating, but it is consistent.

It is also why finishing high enough on the ladder to get home field in finals is important. What is infuriating is that we never get the opportunity to benefit from this in finals, and often are treated like the away team at the mcg against big Melbourne teams who finished lower than us.

He was better than i thought he would be but he is going to be straight out for atkins because he cant play any position except inside mid. But if he plays like that he might be on a list next year (it could get him a deal elsewhere even if it isnt with us).

You have to pick him over Clark after a performance like that. Similar roles and certainly had a greater impact on the game.

I'm not sure it's bias, more incompetence.
Being at the game the “noise of affirmation” seems to be real. It is complete silence when we should get a free kick. If that dempsey one happened at gmhba the Joel Selwood stand would have shaken with noise and the umpire would have paid it for sure

I'm with you re Parfitt and Clark.

Clark continually lost his feet (like he did last week) and when in a pack he was just given no room. It's only his 3rd game (2nd really) so I don't want to be too harsh but everyone talking about keeping Clark in and Parfitt out have rocks in their head.
The difference is by the end of this year if we keep playing Clark he will most likely pass Parfitt in every area except experience.

I have met a Parfitt a few times IRL and i love him as he is an incredible person i can see why Scott and the rest of the club love him
but he has pretty much hit his celling which is fringe 22/back up for us.

Clark has the possibility to be in our best midfield group for the next 10+ years

Combination of no Sav Henry back and the fact the defence doesn't have injuries left and right like last year

Outstanding win! Feeling like we have a pretty deep squad this year. My only gripe was mannagh - did some good things and will be an astute pick up, but needs to learn we don't need heroes, team goals and unselfishness is more important. You have gryan miers as a mentor
I didn’t mind that really- he’s taking it on-great to see such confidence in him. He’ll adapt no problem, but in the interim, I’m all for backing himself.

I thought Mullin was ok… but still feel like he just needs to work on getting the ball as much as possible in the VFL and building confidence.

Legit chuck him in ball in the VFL and let him go.

Locking down in the backline on someone and hardly getting a touch isn’t gonna fast track his hurt factor.

It sound weird to say, but I kind of wish he failed a bit more.

What I mean by that is as someone learning the sport he’s obviously going to make mistakes, and I’d rather he try and bite off too much off and get caught holding th ball rather than be a bit timid and give the easy handball sometimes.

At the game and at one stage he was 60 out from our goal in the flank 1 vs 1 and he hesitated and handballed backwards. That’s the time I want to see him use his pace and go for it. If he gets caught, so be it.

He seems to have elite athletic traits, but doesn’t seem to use them. This will probably change once he’s more comfortable/familiar with the game I guess.

I had to laugh at Jeremy Cameron's assessment of the ground invader.

Best game ive seen blicavs play in probably 2 years. Was excellent. But he wasnt even in our top 2 players tonight in one of his best ever games. Best player in the league

Best player is debatable, but probably the most versatile.

Nicky D can get 40+ touches and what-not, but pretty sure you couldn't throw him into the ruck if needed or shuffle him into a KPF/KPD role and have him do at a decent (if not outstanding) job.
