Burton is actually taller, heavier and more nimble. Jones is 2cm shorter but heavier and seems harder at the ball. Dropping Jonas is 100% the right call

But still looking forward to the selection melts. It will be interesting to see if Boak is selected.

If all the players come back/play for the magpies, I think Port will have just Duursma and Georgiades on the injury list (113 games combined)

that’s not including Boak (336 games) - maybe another week away or Clurey (124 games) - late scratching from last week but not on the offical injury list.

Either way, that’s pretty good for this part of the season.

I applaud the call. Having said that, I thought against Melbourne in the wet was probably his best game of the year. Might be as much about match ups as anything...
More to do with Jones finding some rare form the last 1.5 weeks across the SANFL and AFL. No point doing anything to unsettle that.

I'd also be keeping Dixon out for a week so we can get a look at a Lord/Marshall combo

I want to see Finlayson/Dixon main ruck and drop Lycett instead.

Basically ensures that we have 3 good forward talls at all times.
Lycett has absolutely done his job the last couple weeks. Keeps this up and he wont be dropped. If he drops away then fair enough, but he shouldn't be dropped at the moment.

Let's not kid ourselves, the whole plan changed after Tredrea made his comments.
Yes, let's not kid ourselves. Because I'm sure the poor performances against Collingwood and Adelaide had nothing to do with the fact that we were smashed 98-155 in contested possession while pressure acts were 253-242 one week and the next week we recorded 124-146 in contested possessions while pressure acts were 276-256.

You know what that says? It says that there were too many players standing around waiting for Collingwood/Adelaide players to get the ball and not getting to the secondary contest first. As soon as Butters went into the middle and we started resting Horne-Francis as deep forward and playing him in bursts in the middle, against Sydney we went 184-196 in contested possessions and 311-314. In other words, our contested possession differential to the opposition improved as our pressure differential decreased...instead of getting to the ball second, we started hunting with a bit more urgency and getting to the contest first.

High pressure numbers are only good if you're winning the contested ball as well.

Barely 6 weeks ago Jonas missed a game and afterwards Hinkley was asked about Jonas coming back into the side given he was down on form etc, and Hinkley's response was akin to "well he's the captain so even thought he's not playing his best, as he's the captain he's definitely going to be back in the team next week."

That we are seeing such an about face 6 weeks later makes me think this decision wasn't directed by Ken alone.

Yes and contested ball is about effort, intensity, hunger as much as anything. So what may have driven that change?

Even the most ignorant and blind Hinkley stooge has got to be able to draw a correlation between the post Rnd 3 reaction and the change that has followed.

I don't prescribe to the "Carr's now in charge philosophy", but something has happened. One of the most significant and clearest standout points for change is the reaction post round 3, and the overdue, completely deserved criticism that came at Ken. It seems to have triggered something, even if it is just that it has given the boys a purpose to rebel against. Who cares, whatever it is, it is working, and it isn't just on-field where the changes are clearly drastic.

Agreed. I think the whole Carr in charge is nonsense and a convenient way to set aside positives from the last 8 weeks.

I reckon the intense pressure after the showdown loss was the trigger for a conversation that things needed to change urgently and could be used as a way of selling Hinkley to shake something up - which he's done.

What also has been really interesting since those two games is our combination of goals and behinds. Our goals and behinds combination since then has been higher than our oppositions goals and behinds. I don't think Tredrea can take credit for that.

i cant believe people are trying to convince themselves Hinkley is calling all these shots that he's never called before. some people just refuse to believe things right in front of their eyes until there's official news, a quote, an official press release confirming it for them. but they'll never get that, so this debate will rage on forever...

Wow, in a 9 game winning streak we have kicked more goals and behinds than our opposition. Mindblowing....
