I hope Hogan and (any other tall) aren't spoiling each other in the marking contests this week. More of that Sean Darcy sacrificial attempt that effectively blocks the defender for the other tall to mark please.

The feature of our forward entries during JLT was Hogan and Lobb knocking each other aside in the mark

The JLT was a fake out, watch our tall forwards coordinate like its a 1940s aquamusical.

going off the bench last week, the order of names meant nothing on who was omitted. Can't see Cerra missing. More likely, RBB taking the pi55, like having Wilson listed in the CHF position on Wright.

It might work against gold coast but that forward line is too tall, the 18 looks a bit unbalanced to me to be honest

Cerra was named with the emergencies (in the bottom half of the 8 man bench) so he might be out for Matera. Taberner named on the field.
There is no bottom half of the bench. They dont name them in order. I dont think we will play 8 forwards. (Hogan, Lobb, Tabs, Walters, McCarthy, Matera, Shultz, Banfield). Means in my view its a choice between Matera or Shultz. Think we definitely need the forward pressure of Banfield. Hoping for Shultz.

Sort of agree here. Makes me think Darc may be a late out and Lobb into the middle.

A report from the training thread legends should hopefully shed some light.

Hope so, Quokka. The Freo forward clashes tempered my excitement seeing Hogan on the field for us during JLT. Intraclub featured bit of that too. Hope they reach a gentleman's agreement on Sunday.

Hill, Blakely,Logue , Sandy to fit in makes for one hell of a line up. I think we might be underestimating what this squad can achieve.
Feels a bit like 2012 but our current list is a lot more skilful. I love where our list is at; depth on all lines and the age demographic is spot on to be right up there for the next few years.

I don't mind trying a really tall forward line. If you look at some of the forward lines West Coast played last season it's arguably similar in terms of mobility.

Vardy, Kennedy, Darling, Waterman, LeCras - not exactly a super fast forward line.

Lobb, Taberner, Hogan, McCarthy might be a bit taller but just as mobile imo.

Don't expect us to play 4 talls all season but worth an experiment. Is McCarthy really a tall or a medium forward like LeCras, just a lot taller?

McCarthy and Hogan have more upside to them. They’re mobile that they can play midfield, move up the ground. So exclusively we’re playing two talls with 3 medium forwards. It’s flexible.

Cerra as emergency. Wow. That’s a big message. Not his fault he’s playing out of position.
We brought in Matera for him. Really. Honestly Ross
Ummmm they dont announce final teams till tomorrow

Gone a bit early there mate, teams aren't out til 2pm tomorrow
Generally the teams on the field are a lock. The interchange is where the outs come from.
Not sending the right message to a youngster like Cerra, if true, though. Hogan and Matera in, you would be stiff as a second year player out of position.

Actually I think rotations make it work provided we give Darcy more rest time rather than pushing him forward. Last week the forward players (even talls) had to spend a bit more time on ground on ground with Ballaz only playing 67% time on ground with Lobb played 88% of game time, McCarthy 93%, Tabs 86%. and Sean Darcy 88%. Darcy spent a fair bit of time forward as a guess our ruck rotation was Darcy 70% Lobb 30%. Even if the tall forwards continued to play as high numbers as the North then Lobb's not in the forward for 42% of a game by my estimation. If that became our average rotation Tabs isnt in the forward line for 14% of a game. Darcy was in the forward line for 18% of a game as a guess ish. If you add McCarthy off the ground for 7%. By my maths it means we can afford to play all 4 of Lobb, McCarthy, Hogan and Tabs while only having three on the ground the vast majority of the time even with them all playing high numbers for tall players.

Actually love the idea of playing all 4 because it allows us to continue to kick long to marking targets for the entire game with three tall forward options always on the ground.
Advantages in my view.
Allows us to get Darcy's ground minutes down to say around 70%. Which should help him to run out games better. Any change in midfield mix could be made up by increasing time on ground for Cerra and Colyer.
Allows for the awesome situation of going with Lobb in the ruck against the oppositions second ruck while still having Hogan, Tabs and McCarthy still marking targets forward.
Provides flexiblity in using Hogan mid if required.
Allows Tabs to play on the opposition's third tall defender for longer periods.
Dont mind the four talls in the forward line when Walters is mid or on the bench. When the four are there we need two players with great pressure as their partners. Walters is great, but I loved the pressure of Shultz and Banfield last week and I think we need great pressure if we go with four talls for say 15% of a game. Hogan is also way quicker in my view that most seem to think here. His leading speed and acceleration over 20 metres is his biggest strength from what I remember watching him at Melbourne. Last year Im pretty sure he was second in tackles per game (behind Darling) in terms of tackles by tall forwards. The speed of Hogan and McCarthy also makes it more realistic to have four talls in the team as they can exert more tackle pressure than some might think.

Plenty of things in footy look better in theory or on paper. But if McCarthy keeps playing well and Hogan can come in and plays as well as last year then I think we have the perfect balance of leading speed and marking power. Should be interesting to see if my theory turns into reality or not o the weekend.Obviously I could be way wrong as well.
