Dogs v Dees
out - Dunkley, R Smith.
In - Libba, Young.
Such a shame to lose Dunks. Libba hopefully fit and refreshed. I’d bring in Young over Roarke for flexibility. Can play back on Dees big fwds or chop out in ruck allowing Bruce to stay forward.
Agree with these changes.

We will go in with a very similar team to when we played them rd 11. We just played poorly that night and let them set the tone.

Did not really rate Melbourne up until that night - they are a seriously good team. We play well they play well, I think we have them with more forward options.

I have a feeling Bevo will be happy to go with English and a bit of Bruce against Gawn and Jackson. Dude does not give a rats about convention or what others think. Reckon he might just go Libba for Dunks.

What killed us last time was Dale, Daniel and Libba making horrible kicking errors into the middle, all of which led to goals. Nothing in Melbourne’s forward line should scare us. If we score 80 points we should win.

What's the point of being part of this forum if we can't talk about tactics, gameplan, selection and the myriad of other football subjects that can be influenced by the coach? Beveridge makes adjustments and sometimes doesn't make adjustments, but he not god-like and we can debate what should be done with the team and playing style. Perhaps you might also stop referring to other posters on here as morons.

Talking about those things is great. Claiming the coach is getting outcoached every time we start losing or we lose a match is getting old as ****. It’s terribly lazy and by the amount of posters now making ridiculous comments about it, it seems to be getting contagious.
There’s so many things to discuss about our games during and post siren, yet the lazy posters go with the same stupid rhetoric.
Bevo bad man, Bevo doesn’t change game plans, Bevo choose favourites.

As crazy as this may sound, some times our systems break down due to the 18 on the field and nothing the coaches can do corrects it. Pretty crazy huh? Sometimes players have off games as a group. Sometimes it’s minor stuff like a couple of the mids having off days, so the oppo mids get on top in vital areas and it can become a domino effect, putting pressure on our defence to win more 1v1’s than they have previous weeks. Add to that the possibility that our fwd line may be up against a back line containing a couple of the inform defenders in the comp.
Other weeks it could be an off week for the fwds, or defenders. Some times we may be playing after a 6 day break following a covid stay over interstate and the players are struggling between the ears to get up for the weekends game.
Maybe Bevo some weeks struggles with the messaging pre game and the players don’t hit the ground running as they should against the Tigers/Demons of the comp.
Sometimes we have an off game that’s partially due to the outstanding performance of the opposition (Swans game???)

Luckily for us, any combination of these and other things has resulted in only 4 losses this season. Pretty amazing, that in a game where it only takes a small percentage less than what the opposition brings in systems/workrate/output/preparation etc to be on the end of a bad loss, we’re 2nd on the ladder with only 4 losses.

Coaches make mistakes and Bevo’s no different to other coaches in the comp. The facts are that he and every other coach has every one of us in here covered easily in the footballing knowledge department and anything brought up in here during games or post game isn’t news to them.

It’d be great to see some actual match analysis post game instead of the lazy brain dead out coached horse Shit we hear most weeks. Some posters like Wetdog and a few others are great in the post game threads. It would make for far better reading if we saw more of that kind of stuff.

Given the strong likelihood that we meet Melbourne at some point in the finals, possibly very deep, I am curious as to whether both teams lay all their cards on the table this week or whether a bit of cat and mouse transpires.

I agree, it would be good for Melbourne not to come up against a full strength Bulldog outfit until we really need the win.

How we approach this match from a team selection and tactical point of view is really intriguing.

Last time we had a bit of an off night, whilst Melbourne brought a specific plan for us and executed it.

Given that we expect to play against them again in the finals, we don't want to show 'all our cards' and allow them the opportunity to devise comprehensive countering tactics for next time. However we also don't want to lose both games and give them the psychological advantage of having beaten us twice during the season.

So we want to make some adjustments but still hold something up our sleeve if possible.

In the round 11 match, they focused on negating our key players, and left our lesser lights free. Our lesser lights were found wanting and were simply unable to step up and fill the gap. I would prefer to have fewer fringe type players in the side although it looks like there may not be a lot of difference personnel wise compared to last time.

Dunks is the obvious out from last week, and Libba will slot back in as a direct replacement.
The next selection question will be whether we bring back Sweet or Martin to go with two rucks, or stick with English and the part timers.

Although I suspect Beveridge won't, I would prefer to bring in a second ruck to combat Melbourne's obvious strength in this area.
I would also bring in Lipinski because he is a player that can step up and do some damage (and handle gathering a lot of possessions) if he is left alone.

I would choose two out of Roarke Smith, Garcia or McNeil as the players to make way, with McNeil my preference to remain in the side. I know that Garcia has a lot of fans on this forum but I think there are other fit players currently better than him, including Lipinski.

It’s actually a pretty huge game. We lose and lions & port win, we’re only one game in the 4 and then somehow even with port.

And win and just about lock in top spot with a home final against Brissy or Port, which is a great result.

Huge game, I don’t give a **** about showing them our A game, get it done

If we can get to finals with a couple of games into Treloar, Dunks, Wood, Martin,VDM, all with fresh legs and no further injuries, I fancy our preparation over Melbourne who have played all their keys all year. Already showing signs of tiredness for mine.

Sometimes seeming bad fortune can be a blessing in disguise.
We seem a bit tired too i think. not having the bye off is not helping

12.8.80 to 11.13.79?

It's going to be wet, cold and windy Saturday night. Those conditions don't seem to bother Naughton as he just clunks everything. Bruce will be playing partly in the ruck. How does JUH go in the wet? Even though he kicked 3 last week he may need to go for team balance in the conditions.

Doesn’t sound stupid at all, in fact it’s what was flagged by Lyon last night as a potential reason why Melbourne struggle against some poorer teams - they play six in the forward line and keep May and Lever accountable.

Now I’d be disappointed in Bevo taking really any notice of the superficial “analysis” done on some of these talking head shows but there must be a kernel of truth in some of them. This might be one. Play Naughton, Bruce and JUH against May, Lever and Petty, plus a defensive forward for Salem (JJ?) and round out with our smalls. Six v six and they can’t zone off without risking a free player in our forward 50.

I know it’s not as simple as that but if we play an extra at stoppage and bomb the ball in, and combine that with some risky kicks across our back line or in the corridor, then we’re asking to get beaten exactly like we did last time. Should be an interesting match up.
Melbourne drop a player back from the contest, so it would be 7v7 if we were to match them. Will result in a clogged forward line, but might not be the worst thing.

100% agree mate. I've tried to engage a couple of times with this rhetoric to to try find out exactly how Bevo was outcoached, but I can't say much in the way of analysis or reasoning has ever been provided. I would actually love to engage in that realm as Mutt has described but unfortunately there's often no real substance behind the claim. Other times it's been evident that those making the claim haven't watched the game in person which makes it very hard to have any real discussion on match day strategies.

Not sure we can go into this one with Tim one out against Gawn and Jackson. Time to bring Sweet in?
I do agree he needs help but I’d be swapping Lewis Young for Roarke. They have 3 very large tall forwards and it would be absolutely ridiculous to go in with just 2 KPD with one of them being the undersized and not very good Cordy.

Hmmm not too sure about that.. they have two, but I guess Jackson played some minutes there too but not overly concerned about him in the air. Brown also plays a lot up the ground. Gawn doesn’t push forward, he almost becomes another backman.

I’d go:
Mcdonald - Cordy
Brown - Keath
Fritsch - Duryea/Williams
Jackson - Maybe a switch and go Keath when needed.

Regarding Young, if it’s not Sweet then yeah Young is going to have to chop out in the ruck
