Prediction Changes vs Dees round 19

Your spot on rucking kills a forwards conversion, a few years ago I saw Dixon kicking for goal in a port final , and swore the man needed oxygen with a tank and mask , needless to say the kick was sprayed and woeful . I don’t remember seeing Dunstan / Lockett or Carey ruck that much .
Bruce copped a lot last week in the match day thread, but in fairness to him we were playing him as second ruck.

He is third or fourth in the Coleman and should be playing permanently forward.

It takes a lot out of a player in the ruck. This shouldn’t be underestimated.

Crozier would be a good match up for Fritsch.
I'm betting we will have Williams play above his height.

There's no way Wood would come straight in.

Would have been good to get another game into Dunks and Naughton before this one.

Let’s hope we don’t see a repeat of the first quarter last time. Silly switch passes in the back half and trying to bite off passes that weren’t there. Melbourne will clog up the middle so If we need to go down the line use it. Bevo needs to find a plan B this weekend. It’s what good coaches do.

Again vs Melbourne no Martin, Gardner, Treloar and Dunkley.

Great test for Bev and his coaching staff as an opportunity to pinch a win and still have upside when we may play them again with players mentioned above back in the side.

Bev performance as coach is so important this week. We cannot be blinded by anything Melbourne does and start is so important without the crowd.

Play JUH as a defensive forward on Lever
Need a defensive forward on Christian Salem

I’d back Naughton one on one against May or Lever, problem is the way is gets in there. Template we used against the Eagles should be the way to go.

o God, crozier worries me big time. Against GS, he and Cordy tried spoil the same ball but noone even touched it. Stock is bare down there, would rather young for crozier

Wonder what is going on with him he was Mr Dependable last year. Hope he finds form again

This will be a great test of Bevo's coaching prowess. Quite a few of his best players not available and coming up against the most settled line-up in the comp with a very effective game plan. Melbourne's team defence is just impenetrable when they're on. If he can manufacture a win this week I hope he gets the credit he deserves on here for once.

IF we really want to win, we need to get the ball into Viney’s hands. He is a turnover merchant extraordinaire.
Have JJ sit on Salem OR even put McSteal on him and try to force turnovers.
Gawn won’t be in the ruck that much, he is playing less than 50% now due to being banged up. Gawn then slots in either forward or back.
When kicking forward, their defenders are slower than our forwards, so kicking to space is a good option.
Don’t kick to Cordy in the pocket OR out wide, unless we have someone with pace running past to take the handball.

Dees will clog the middle and put Gawn and May down the line. Aside from Kosi, they lack speed for the run down. Having JJ providing a running option may well be key to breaking their zone.

Dees midfielders aren’t fast, it’s a shame we are missing Treloar, he would love running away from a stoppage against them. We can try using Smith to do the same but he needs to know his limitations.

And if he can't, he'll have been outcoached.

Agreed, this is a major test for Bevo. I still believe the team we field will have slightly more talent. Dees are in a form slump. Some teams have picked them apart. Clarko with a team that should have been smashed by 100 points was able to orchestrate a draw.

Has Bevo learnt from the last encounter and will he adjust accordingly? I still rate our team is better so I expect a win. Players should be up for it, just hope the coach is.

It's just a confidence issue. We know what he can do and he did is consistently for a couple of years but he's just out of sorts. Playing the role he is requires full confidence of your ability all of the time or you find yourself in bad positions (as he has). We just have to hope he gets in back very quickly.

Stop Oliver is the first mission for mine. I would tag him with Libba.
He still can't hit a target but Oliver has become a lot more damaging with the ball, he routinely gets 40m plus bullying out of a pack. Aside from our atrocious first quarter turnovers last time we played that is how they overwhelmed us, surging the ball forward with manic pressure.

Also what was overlooked with the Harmes tag on Libba was how much he hurt us going the other way. 20+ disposals himself, a goal, tackles etc... Simply cannot let that happen, if they are going to tag we need to break even at worst at that match-up.

Fully agree.

I have a feeling we'll win this. If we are to win, it's going to be on the back of a game plan and in-game tactics to counter any moves made by the Melbourne coaching staff.

We're short on troops, but I'm backing in our depth. We're undefeated in the VFL which proves we have depth. I take comfort knowing the likes of West, Lipinski and Schache probably won't play in the AFL this week. Those three, especially Lipinski, would be playing for most teams at full strength. We're below full strength and those three still won't get a game for us.

Richmond have shown in recent years they can get the job done with some of their best players on the sidelines. If we're to win the premiership this year, I feel we have to win big games against fellow contenders despite not being full strength.

Undermanned, on Melbourne's home ground, as (slight) underdogs. We can do this!

Will be interesting if we go back to the strategy of keepings off to avoid Melbourne's strength in defending aerial balls. I think the idea was right in order to counter them, we were just let down in execution with some uncharacteristic turnovers/poor kicking. The other alternative would be play it like Hawthorn did which was kick in low, almost forcing ground balls into the forward line and let our smalls win the ball there. Another option we could try is just to try beat them at the their own game.... back in Naughton/Bruce/JUH/English to beat Melbourne in the air. This is probably the most risky option, but if it works out it probably gives us the easiest and fastest path to goal so it has the biggest pay off as well.

You would back Naughts to either beat or halve contest against May or Lever. The problem is whether Bruce and JUH ensure they drag them defender away with them not for the 2-1 to occur. Both May and Lever zone off. This can be exploited and if we surround the talls with weightman, Garcia and JJ hopefully we can exploit this.

We really need to not send an extra player up to the stoppages which allows Melbourne a loose defender.

Also we almost need to go man on man in our forward line as stupid as that sounds because Melbourne continually want to drop off and have a deep defender or two to intercept a long kick out of congestion or from pressure. Going man on man at least makes a 50/50 contest and prevents easy intercepts and being hurt on the rebound.
