We can’t really afford a 2-3 week experiment.

Bevo experiments all the time. He experimented with Young as a no 1 ruck in the finals series... dude will try everything unconventional. Why not experiment with something that is conventional? It's what the majority of teams are doing (playing 2 genuine rucks).

The easy/obvious solution to Stewart is to have one of Dunks/Bont forward at all times and have them as the direct matchup. Both good enough aerially, Dunkley can play more defensively on him and still be a marking threat, whereas Bont will command the defensive attention.

Stewart would run off the likes of Khamis/Schache/Cordy and would outmark the smaller types such as West/Mccomb.

Think Buku has run his race to be fair. Two relatively poor games - missing set shots (even if tough), dropping marks, not really getting involved in a lot of play.

He's shown a lot, but blokes are coming back from injury and he won't be the only one that we think have shown something that might struggle to make the 22 - Cleary's already one, and blokes who were picked earlier than others currently in the team (Wallis, Garcia, Hannan if he recovers) also might struggle to force their way back in. This team did make a Grand Final last year, after all.

Defensive fwd tag on Stewart is an interesting idea.

Seems Stewart would likely impose himself on whoever he chooses however, as he's always done. Nothing like a challenge though, and it would be an interesting arm wrestle and battle of wills for whomever was charged with forcing him to rethink that choice and then imposing their own tag.

I'd like to nominate Ed Richards for the job. He's physically comparable, quick with an aerial presence and the ability to intercept as we observed against the Suns.

Would be a good test for the young man and almost left field enough for Bevo to contemplate.

If he was given that role, Cleary back in, Baz resumes, Sweety omitted (retained as medi-sub) and Wes McComb could consider himself a little unlucky.

Now we have the anti 2 ruck lobby apparently.

We have actually worked out all good teams have a primary ruck 70 to 80 percent of the time with someone providing the other 20 to 30 percent of the ruck????

If we play Sweet so be it, if we play Cordy in that role so be it, if we play Khamis in that role so be it.

Bruce probably won't when he gets back but is best at it.

Footy has moved on. The second ruck must be able to do something the other 30 to 40 percent of the time they are on the ground.

Sweet is no where near that now. If Bev gives him the opportunity I will support that percent but he has not shown he can do that.

Our early losses that we should not have had have put us in a precarious position. The only player at AFL VFL level that has shown competency as a second ruck thus far is Khamis followed by Cordy followed by Sweet.

None are going to make a significant difference at the end of the day but for the Geelong game to my way of thinking the only obvious change is Baz for Sweet with Buku as the the second ruck.

Direct forward entries in proper not just bomb and Stewart is a non entity.

This game will show if we are a genuine competitor right now. Lose and there is pressure to make the finals but pick the best 22 do not experiment or gift games this week

After a long lay off, sickness, short week and trip back from Perth, I think that we need to be careful of English backing up. I would think that English will ruck a significant less % than he did against the Eagles - probably 55 to 60%. In that case, I think that Sweet stays in.

I also think that Buku will hold his spot. He actually good to good positions against the Eagles but just didn't handle the slippery conditions.

After a 100 point win, zero bevo won't want to tinker too much.

My selections:
In- Smith
Out: mccomb

I'd like to see Wallis back into at least a sub spot.
He was excellent in the VFL, particularly when he moved from the forward line to midfield. Had 24 disposals even though he mostly sat on the bench in the second half. JJ also showed his class in the 1st half kicking a couple of beautiful goals. He too was basically subbed out after half time. It's unlikely that either will feature before the bye but it's nice to know they will be fit and ready to grab an opportunity when it comes.

I reckon we’d give away at least two fewer goals per game if Caleb focused on staying behind the pack. We’re good at bringing the ball to ground in the back line, but it’s easily run out the back and then goals happen easily because nobody’s there. Caleb is short enough to crumb really effectively and if he can get it into his hands it’s going to a teammate.

The Sweet debate is very interesting.

I'm on the side to play him. However, if it's playing the role he played against West Coast then no. He cannot play.

I'm wondering whether that was planned or Timmy's complete dominance around the ground against Jamieson and Williams made us leave him in the ruck longer than originally planned.

For Sweet to play in this team he needs to be

Before omitting him, I would like us to give Sweet 2-3 games to see if he can get his head around playing forward. Also wouldn’t mind seeing if he’s useful in a game where we’re forced to kick down the line and bomb it into 50 a lot more than we were last night.
He's 24 and hasn't been able to do it at VFL level why would we experiment with it at AFL level when it's clear and obvious he's a liability?

Only a matter of weeks ago, there were a lot of strong opinions just like this one about how far off AFL level West was.

I don’t think Sweet is a gun, nor expect him ever to be. But he’s also no more of a “liability” than the alternatives.

It's been a deliberate strategy with the 3 tall defenders in the last two games to make our half-backs attacking and high up the ground, playing to their strengths, even if we leak a few goals, leading to higher overall games. We could do that, but then we neutralise a fair bit of our transition ball movement.

At the very least I think we can accept that Sweet has now taken over from Martin as our preferred 2nd ruck/ emergency ruckman. Or, do we believe that there is still some good mileage left in Martin's legs?
I think/hope everyone agrees with this. The argument is around whether Sweet is a suitable best 22 player if English is taking 70/80% of the ruck.

The exact argument if he didn't go past Martin this year there would be some serious question marks. and its closer to 80-90% for English

I don’t think it was that West was that far off AFL level, more so about whether or not he had a role in our 22. He could’ve comfortably started in quiet a few teams, but would he have been a walk up in ours? Far from it.

He’s behind 6-7 mids for a spot, so would have to have come in and play a role he hadn’t been playing. Luckily, he’s played it well across most of the two games he’s played.

Sweet on the other hand... There’s large parts of his game that aren’t AFL level. And if it wasn’t for the fact we shat the bed recruiting any ruck depth over the last few years, he’d be a mile off getting a game.

There’s a fair difference between the two imo.
