Humphrey was starting to crack the 10 towards the end of the season with his big finish. followed by runner up in the Morrish medal.
Just went back through Cal Twomey’s phantom draft form guide to see when Humphrey first popped up

Was ranked at 7 in his August update released on September 4 after not being in the top 30 a month earlier

He was there in September, effectively replaced by Barnett in this update

Charlie Clarke who has some fans on this board for our last pick also dropped out, replaced by Rowston

Darcy Jones not getting a mention either
Shocked that neither Clarke or Keeler are in there!

In the bigfooty mock draft - Keeler went at 19 and Clarke 26. A lot of keen draft watchers in there, and about where I'd have both.

Jones did go at 8, which I think is unrealistic.

Yep, that coincides with his big finish to the year. He had a game in round 14 where he'd just come back from injury and kicked 4.5 and had 31 disposals - this is when everyone stood up and took notice as he'd missed the champs.
He followed up some big games to round out the year. This is when he started to crack the top 10 and get mentioned.

You're working with the Tigers I'm pretty sure.

Hazzard a guess at any of the below (we should make them pay dearly if they're that hungry)

St.Kilda - 9, 28 (Humphrey/Ginbey)
Carlton - 10, 29 (Busslinger)
Bulldogs - 11, 21 (Phillipou)

WCE 8, F4 (+token pick 70+)?

I can't see us willing to trade down if one of Ginbey or Busslinger is the target. I'm not sure Busslinger gets past the dogs anyway - so if we are keen we are probably more likely to pull the trigger at 9 knowing there will be one of 3-4 mids around at 13.

It Tsatsas slides then maybe Carlton or the Dogs trade up. Surely the saints take him if he gets past us (I'm assuming if he slides it is because the bombers have gone Humphrey, Hawks Clark, GC Ginbey and Geelong Busslinger - so we would be looking at Tsatsas, Phillipou, MacKenzie - if we traded with Carlton and they took Tsatsas then I think saints take MacKenzie and we still get Phillipou). Maybe a future 2nd gets it done (not sure if they hold or can trade F2nds).

Could Allen be developed into a Blicav's swiss army knife type? That's the player i think of when think of his size and athletic profile.

He could possibly play the wing running Issac Smith role which Simmo was trying with Hough minus the goal kicking which could come after a few more preseason’s ..

I can’t remember the last time the Eagles went for the obvious/consensus pick since Sheed. Last year most thought it would be Johnson (once Freo ruined our plans taking Erasmus).

Not my consensus or very obvious to me .. I don’t see it but happy to be proven wrong should we go down that road..

I'd be happy with Phillipou, Humphrey, Mackenzie or Clark with our first pick, but not Tsatas (hopefully he doesn't slide).
Interested why not Tsatas? Behind Ashcroft probably the biggest possession winner. Can play inside a bit. Tall and fast with good run and carry.
If there is one thing the Eagles lack is a high possession player (now that Gaff has slowed down) and someone who can run and carry.
Touted as a top 5 pick.
I watched the champs final and although bagged a bit here, I thought he swung the game in the 3rd quarter. Got 30 odd possessions and 5 clearances .

If he slid to 9 I would thank our lucky stars

Not a huge fan of Tsatas (prefer Mackenzie for instance) but I concur with your opinion, in the very unlikely outcome that he is available at pick 9 we have to take him.

I like Mackenzie too. Would be happy with either but think both will be gone.

I'm going on what WCE_phil said about him. Questions on whether he can win his own ball and his kicking is not accurate at pace. Picking the next Jared Polec at pick 9 would be an absolute disaster.

But that's likely a worse case scenario.
I see a lot of Jackson Macrae in him (who I once saw play a game in the TAC Cup in 2012 in Oakleigh where he basically put every ball by foot out of bounds or directly to the opposition) and could see him evolve more into that quality of player or even a McCluggage/Treloar level.
That's not to say there's not players I prefer, but if he's there at pick 9 and Mackenzie, Phillipou and Humphrey are already off the board then it'd be hard for us to pass over him.
Having said that I think this is a very theoretical discussion as Tsatas is almost certain to be gone before pick 9.

Wow - just come back from 2 weeks in the UK and have lightly read items while away. Some observations

1. There is no news. The Melbourne media is making up their normal crap based on nothing. The recruitment teams realise that the last 2 years has meant that clubs will have very different looking first rounds and are holding their cards really close to their chests. Leaks to Cal, Fox and HUN reporters are not happening. This will likely be the most diverging top 30 for some time. Great.

2. The Pieman continues to give nothing away. I love it. No need to share tactics. The fact that most reporters think we will only take WA makes me think that we have other prospects planned.

3. Way too many WCE posters are not understanding why we traded down. Alternatively they are still pissed and cannot get over it. They still can not understanding that the 2 best options in this year are very talented but immature prospects. Neither are leaders and are about as inspiring number 1 picks as Ainsworth was for the Lions. Talent is good but not excellent. Once it was clear GWS wanted 1, we did the right thing and maxed out by splitting.

4. So many fruitless “I want X and Y at 8 and 12”. I am relaxed. We have 2 goes in the sweet spot. The club know we are under strength in the midfield so I expect 2 of the first 3 picks will continue the rectification plans. I am more interested in the pairing of mids.

So I will be glad to remain relatively quiet and sit out the next 3 weeks where it will be more of the same.

I don’t see us trading back down to 5 it defeats the purpose of splitting pick 2.

Have been thinking the last few days that I reckon we will look at a more balanced spread of players than just taking 4 midfielders. We have Culley,Chesser, Hough,Edwards all needing development so I don’t see us taking 4 more mids in one hit.

With that in mind a few possible combinations with where we sit in the draft. Tried to use players where one of the options should be on the board at that pick.

9: Poo /Clarke/McKenzie/Ginbey
13: Hewitt/Hollands
22: Barnett/Keeler
28: small forward or Running back

9: Buss
13:Hewitt/Hollands
22: Hotton/Jones/Konstanty
28:Allen/Szybkoski/Hagen

9: Poo/Clarke/McKenzie/Ginbey/Hewitt
13:Jefferson/Buss
20:Barnett/Keeler
28:Jones/Hagen/Hotton/George/Konstanty/Allen

Or if the media are right and it’s only WA talent

9: Ginbey
13:Buss
15:Hewitt (Traded in with 22 and a future 2nd to swans)
28: Allen/Jones/Hagen/Smith

If junior form was that important Jacob Coniglio, James Embley, Tom Swift would all me premium AFL footballers.

Almost nothing about Ginbey reminds me of Polec. Apart from the obvious physical and athletic differences Polec was allergic to physical contact and mentally soft, his hands were garbage and he wasn't that good overhead.

It still feels like there is a chance Nth take Wardlaw and Tsatas (rather than Sheezel) as it is a good balance of inside and outside.

Assuming then Bombers take Sheezel, GC Ginbey. Clark to hawks maybe Busslinger to cats.

This would be the best result for us. Plenty of options available.

If that's the order I would be happy.

Take McKenzie and hope the saints, blues and dogs dont want Hewitt.

You would think the Saints take MacKenzie if he is available.

It does look like Hewett might get through to 13 at this stage. I'm most worried about the dogs, but I can see them taking either Busslinger or Hayes (if Buss is gone) as they need KPD depth.

It is almost certain that 3 of Humphrey, MacKenzie, Tsatsas, Ginbey & Phillipou are there at 8. If dogs do go for a tall, and Calrton go small (one of that list) along with Saints then Hewett gets to 13.

Whilst our 4th pick is inside 30, some of these players would be in consideration for us, and one or two might be worth using a future pick to trade up for if they slide past 40

* There are a few clubs with picks in the 40’s that may not use them so we might be able to use our future 4th to get one of those picks for a slider

My reference to Polec is in regards to Tsatas.

Wheres the fun in that?
First draft in years that we can actually play a significant part. Half the fun is speculating about players who we might pick up and getting emotionally invested.

I understand why we traded down. Its not overly complicated. We didn't back ourselves to retain one of the top 2 picks and wanted two bites of the cherry. And its an even draft blah blah. I'm over being pissed at it though and am focusing on who we might get at 8 & 12.

BTW I don't think its proven we did the right thing yet. Its as much speculation saying the top 3 picks aren't good leaders and are immature with only mediocre talent. We won't know if we did the right thing until they actually start playing AFL.
