Coach Coach for 2025

My perception is that existing assistants who apply for the senior job and miss out tend to leave but that’s without any research

I think he’s more likely to stay if it’s Montgomery or Lade since they’re both premiership teammates and he might be willing to work with them

If it’s King or McQualter then perhaps not. May depend on whether he’s willing to leave WA

What has McQualter proven other than being able to caretake coach one of the best teams in recent memory to a mediocre record? Richmond overlooked him favouring Yze to rebuild the Tigers. We're in a similar position.

I'd be lying if I said Lade and Montgomery didn't interest me the most of the assistant brigade. However, West Coast has made excellent head coach appointments. Let's hope that trend continues.

Macrae and Kingsley had both been in the system as assistants for a long time and had both been overlooked for multiple jobs they’d interviewed for

I think an older, wiser assistant who’s been in the AFL for a while suits us now more than a younger assistant given the pressure that’ll come with the job

Personally, more confident in Montgomery (or Schofield) than King but that’s an uneducated guess. Unsure on Lade

Skipworth wasn’t on Duffield’s list of six but he could well be on of the other two he couldn’t identify. He would also be suitable as he’s a reputation as being a good development coach

Perhaps but the names being thrown around are all senior assistants at their existing clubs so not sure why they’d move interstate to do the same role. Especially when most of them are at a contending side

all things are possible, this would be sensible to develop a short list. I would think the new coach would then be part of the process. Similarly, IF we are soon appointing a director of footy as indicated by some I would think they would have somer say in the coaches appointment.

Pretty happy with King, if he is indeed the one appointed. High quality candidate who has a background of success. Also, good that he is a complete outsider.

I was thinking 23/24 destroyed on set up and process. I have no idea what influence the line coach had but I suspect art was significant
Importantly we need a fresh voice and a clean break from the past.

Schofield is one of the more attractive candidates especially in relation to coaching his own team to sustained success at the lower level, something none of the other candidates have on their cv.
Also I was surprised at how well he spoke at the press conferences, not that that is all that important in itself although it does point to certain positive attributes he has.

However, on the downside he may have gone from favourite to outsider on the back of the two lamentable games at the end of the year. An insipid performance against a half strength Carlton although they had much more to play for and their strong midfield was still in tact, followed by the horror show at alphabet stadium which reached new lows in a period of record lows. To his and the team’s credit they limited the damage in the second half and two potential players were uncovered in the midfield in Hutchinson and Dewar.

Schofield’s involvement with and association with the club’s lowest period in its history does count significantly against him.
The idea of cutting ties with that shocking period and moving on to a new era definitely has appeal.
The decision is being made by people who have a lot more knowledge and experience than me so I have to trust that they will get it right. Little I can do about it anyway.

I am very underwhelmed with the idea of Stephen King. Would much rather Schofield if we're going for an assistant that's been kicking around.

Trent Cotchin was instrumental in Mini's appointment as coach for Richmond when Dimma left and was last night talking about how good he is and how much the players rated Mini as a leader and teacher as well as hic coaching ability
Went on to mention he was alot like MaCrae in many ways and believed he will make a good coach

I do agree with this in general and think you're absolutely right on the early judgements - it's very hard to tell what an assistant coach will bring in totality.

However (and in fairness this is simplistic) would hope we give a slight weighting to coaches from outside successful systems - we've still got some experienced assistants and players + some recent leaders like Shuey and reportedly Hurn to keep existing positive culture traits going.

Like Simmo coming from the Hawthorn system, outside perspectives may be valuable in seeing the forest for the trees and being able to implement solid change, which I think most of us feel is needed. Knowledge of an excellent system like Geelong's with the drive to apply it to a different list with a unique spin on it I feel is valuable.

Know you weren't specifically advocating for Schofield in your post but for argument's sake, would personally hope if he wins the spot it be with the club seeing him as the better candidate even against the weighting of someone coming from a better system. If it truly was 50-50 (taking into account things like personality, style, strengths etc) would prefer we lean towards an outside perspective given our recent record.

The thing is though I think Schofield had only been in our system for 2 years as before that was assistant coach at Port where I understand he was highly thought of, and possibly only being assistant coach he had to abide by Simmo’s rules whatever that may have been. As a general rule the head coach implements the system and the assistant coach then carries things out as implemented by the head coach. Just a thought!
