A few ominous quotes in this thread...

... and to Johnny Reid... a job well done over the years in what is perhaps the most difficult of roles.
Certainly JR a major reason for the AFC having one of (if not the) most professional & respected management teams in the AFL.

I trust the club to get these sort of things right as if it didn't needed to be pointed out to you all, if someone stuffed up then it makes the club look ridiculous. Do you complaining nelley's believe they would allow this to happen?

Get real.

And as was the argument back then - EVERY club, company and business looks to promote from within first. By claiming this is a defect of Adelaide Football club is ridiculous. It is common practice. He was well credentialed and had been groomed for the role. Having said that, there are certainly times when you need to bring external blood into the organisation.

Not true.

(May 2009): Congratulations to Phil - i've always found him to be quite open and informative on his radio interviews.

I guess I was wrong.

Maybe they were good but then underwent a "midlife crisis" and went off the rails :)

Successful businesses will certainly look at their own people, but will also simutaneously use targeted recruiting to find potentially better candidates while the internal review process is happening. If this recruiting process doesn't come up with somebody clearly better than their own, they'll fill the role from within. Having a suitable candidate within your business to fill the role does not mean you already have the best person to fill said role, and assuming otherwise is a poor management practice, and just plain ignorant.

Yes I get that. But as I said in this thread earlier, all businesses and companies I've worked in over the last almost 4 decades, promoted from within in almost all cases. It was only the odd occasion when someone could be "poached" - and on those occasions? Internal appointment would have been shit loads better! :p

When organisations are successful - hiring someone from within is the best principle as they know the finer details of how the system operates. The organisation doesn't need to worry about policy and procedures.

However, as soon as that system becomes broken and organisational change is needed - hiring people from within isn't as attractive as they get stuck in the rut and it becomes increasingly difficult to identify the problems from within.

We need a new CEO abd a new chairman who can then implement a total review of all aspects of the club.

Anyone who isn't meeting targets needs to go and the internal review will also make everyone lift their game.

Was that government or private enterprise?

Either you have a severe confirmation bias or you haven't worked for a professionally run company. Probably both.
