Good. Now we need to turn some of them into swing men. I mean gov was supposed to be a key forward initially wasn't he?

Even though it looks like a lot of forwards when broken down to AFL / WAFL potential lineups it's not bad at all.

Oscar Allen 196cm - AFL - CHF
Jack Darling 191cm - AFL (for now 3rd Tall)
Jake Waterman 192cm - AFL - FF
Ryan Maric 196cm - AFL / WAFL - Mid size fwd
Bailey Williams 201cm - AFL - 2nd Ruck / Resting Fwd
Youve put 5 tall forwards in the squad. Most clubs like to run 3 with one of them being the backup ruck.
Too many talls and you lack pressure, and you could only fit realistically 2 small forwards and a resting mid into the forward rotation with that many talls.
At least 1 of them has to be left out for sure, or a role change

We are also gathering a bunch of kids from country Victoria - Chesser, Long, both Reids, Johnston, Maric, Burgiel and Culley off the top of my head
Not sure id call culley (langwarrin) or Johnston (mordiallic) country victoria.. they are all within the metropolitan of melbourne.

But your point remains, were not shying away from taking kids from victoria, nor should we.

And even then he forgot Liam Ryan… I mean technically we could easily go with

Maric, Allen, Ryan
Williams, Waterman, Darling

Didn't forget at all, didn't included the smalls as the OP was more regarding too many talls.
We're probably 2 talls too many but JD will be done soon and having some cover for potential injuries is always good.
Plus if we are planning to turn some of them to the backline then it isn't too bad.

Exactly

Lockett Lockett Lockett
Lockett Locket Liam Ryan

Andrew Embley size.

High flying goal kicking winger sounds ok.

He is 22yrs old so likely stopped growing height wise. Puts on a few kgs and off he goes.

Might have some of this wrong but it's looking like a nice bunch of solid forwards for the now and some good depth developing in the WAFL for once.
It’s a nice bunch of forwards at the expense of other areas of our list.

Do you genuinely think the AFL mid season draft is anything more than throwing darts at a dart board blindfolded?

I mean, it has to be more than that. Otherwise why bother involving the recruiting team at all? Just pluck a name out of a hat.

It’s like picking ‘best available’ at pick 40 in the actual draft.

If its a total crapshoot, why melt about not drafting a defender who most likely, in your own words, won't make it anyway?

If (in the recruiters opinion) someone is clearly more talented than everyone else available, even at pick 40, i have no issue with picking them

(I haven't seen a second of any of these guys not playing WAFL but our recruiters clearly rated this guy the best talent available at our pick judging by the statement put out)

we also don’t really know how relevant this ‘medium forward’ tag even is, considering he was playing country footy up until recently. He was probably just pigeon holed there because he was 190 cm (shorter than heaps of midfielders these days).

He’s apparently fast, so in reality his height is meaningless with regard to what position he plays at AFL level. If he was a plodder then you’d be justified in being concerned about being lumped with a Ben McKinley when we already have Waterman, Maric etc.

His highlights suggest he’s zippy and attacks the ball enough to be pretty versatile

You are right it doesn’t really matter at all in the grand scheme of things.

It’s more just our drafting process that’s frustrating. You can’t just keep picking best available however if it makes your list unbalanced and hurts the players development.

Our recruiters also decided will Collins was best available in a mid season draft. Our talent identification sucks at times.

Is there any evidence to suggest it’s much more than that?

Noble pick 14. Durham pick 11. Pickett pick 13 have the most games played.

High picks doing well are Maric pick 1, Newcombe pick 3 and d’ambrosio pick 3.

The curve is pretty flat for games played and pick selection in mid season drafts. You can see that looking at 2019 and 2021 drafts.

Our top three games record holders are Hurn pick 13, Cox rookie draft and Darling pick 26, so by your logic the whole draft system is basically a blind throw at a dartboard.
