Latest news and rumours:

  • List Manager Matt Clarke appeared on Gettable - Click spoiler below for summary
On the draft: "We predicted that the draft was strong, but it's probably gotten stronger during the year."

On top end of draft: "You could probably make five or six different choices and get it right."

On Pick 3: "I reckon there's five (players) around that mark."

On splitting: "I think you want to hold an early selection if you can. The depth of this group allows you to maybe have some movement there, and see what you can do to bring in more talent in the first 20-25 picks. Easier said than done, and I think most clubs would be saying the same thing. We'll see what we can do."

On Liam Baker: "He's still yet to make a decision. They're still weighing up a few things. We'd love to get Liam on board from what he offers from a talent and leadership point of view. We understand where we're at as a group, we're rebuilding our group, we need to add some guys in the middle tier to support our young group."

On Jack Graham: "We've got a number of players that we're speaking to. A bit of a wait and see on that one as well. We'll talk to a number of guys."

On Shai Bolton: "I think it will be difficult for anybody, really. He's heavily contracted and a high quality player."

On James Peatling: "He's heavily involved in a finals series at the moment so I don't want to comment too much on it, but I think there's a number of guys that have been playing really good footy this year that could suit what we do and what other clubs do. He's taken his footy to another level this year."

On Tom Barrass: "We've had an early discussion with Hawthorn about it, they understand where we're at. He's nominated Hawthorn as his ideal destination. We want what we think he's worth, as a genuine key back in the competition that can do what he can do. We're obviously mindful of getting an appropriate deal for West Coast."

On Tom Clurey: "Maybe (note: sounded very non enthused). We'd probably need some key back depth, whether that's through the draft or trade and free agency."

On Jack Darling: "We've had initial discussions with his management group about (moving). We're open to talking, as we are with all of our players, but Jack's contracted with us."

On Liam Ryan: "I expect him to be at West Coast next year, yes." (The most definitive answer of the day by a mile, a non-starter of a talking point.)

On out of contact players e.g. Rotham, Witherden, Jones: "We're still working through what it looks like from a list point of view, and how many selections we'll want to have, and players that may come in and potentially may go out. You might want to give a coach an opportunity to look at these guys."

On Harley Reid: "We've had discussions most of the year with his management group. I think it sits in a really good place. We're open to doing really whatever they want to do to be honest. We're really confident in building the right system around Harley, on and off field, to make sure that he's really comfortable, that he's going to play his best footy, and his long term future."

On Jake Waterman's new deal: "Yep, really close. We're working really closely with his management on that. I expect that we'll have something done pretty soon."

On Oscar Allen: "We've been talking with Oscar and his manager most of the year on that one. We're going through some stuff at the moment. I think we'll be ok with that one."

If hawks pick is 14-18 I’d be chucking a f2 with Barass and asking for them to give us ward and their first.

Then I’d bundle 3+ hawks f1 and hope that’s enough to trade for an uncontracted Liam baker.

Actually though I’d hope we pick Draper and then travaglia, Lindsay or berry.

Would also pick up Jack Avery in rookie draft for key position depth he’s still young I rate him better than a bazzo.

Barnett for soldo would be nice

Overpay peatling get him over here

23 for baker I guess but would rather walk him through psd

Try and upgrade on our worst 10 players that’s where the improvement will come from

Chris D confirmed.

Bombers pick 8 and 28? They might have a cap squeeze though.

Saints 7 and 24.

Dogs (cats R1 Bayley smith compo) Garcia and buzz for barrass and 40(darling trade)

Would take both Bombers and Saints trade and think they are fair. Saints we’d need to send something back and Bombers we can contribute salary if they spent theirs on McSpud.

Dogs we are looking at pick 15-18, Garcia and Buzz for Barrass and 40. Really want a top 10 pick so would probably give that one a miss. No way Buzz leaving now anyway.

It’ll still be the Hawks, he sounds pretty locked in with them. We’ll have to get extras on the deal now, which hopefully gets blown on the Baker trade and saves our main picks.

Hawks pick probably in the Hynes/Davis/Gross/Oliver kind of range if they make the prelim? Unless there’s a slider. Travaglia not in the mix but could Berry be late teens?

Worpel is the Hawks 2nd best mid. Go get a couple of mids that will crack in and have some upside (Peatling and Garcia). Plus pick 3 + 13*

Coach to get accountability.

Last two finals proved it’s not all about the ceilings of players but also players that will do a job and play a role. Hawks list is far less superior to the Dogs on talent but well drilled, belief, generally playing team first and having dip. (Foot skills helped as well)

Think we prepare ourselves for Pick 18 and anything better is a bonus. Too hard to death ride Hokball the way they’re playing.

In: Pick 18 + 30 + F1
Out: Barrass + F2

Is it actually trade 'week', or have the no brains trust at the AFL finally just done what they've clearly always wanted for some reason, and turned it into Trade Month?

Week and a bit - October 7-16

Oh boy, I totally forgot about Trade Radio - about 15 minutes of content spread over a multi-hour block with the most terrible hypotheticals to pad out the awkward silences.

Truly riveting media. chefs kiss

Clean slate for Pyke and Clarke currently but the Barrass outcome will be their first really important and measurable footy KPI. It’s an opportunity to get an important trading win for the club with a sought after player in contract. Freo have shown what can be achieved by being difficult negotiators with the Schultz and Weller trades. I’m looking forward to seeing how the new guys play this.

Not what I said, Allen for a future fourth yes, but Waterman would be a late first if he wants to go. I don't rate Allen at all, struts around with his bumb out like a private schooler at assembly and then plays like its a game of markers up.
Allen for a future fourth jesus. Even if there was a planet on which internally we thought he was only worth that, we could get a lot more for him at the trade table. Guarantee we'd get either a top 10 pick, or 2x teens picks. So suggesting we should just let him go for F4 is derelict

If they play like that against Port, they will beat Port into oblivion.
Port are capable of very good football on their day. Will be highly motivated to perform next week & not go out in straight sets again. Just need Butters to butter up again.

I fully expected Hawks to topple dogs, but I reckon they're 50-50 at best to beat Port if Butters is in

Unless Carlton beat the Lions and then lose to Swans/GWS, then it’s 14. Either way I think we’re out of Travaglia territory now unfortunately.

Unless we do this, which we should otherwise it’s R1 and F1. From memory Freo told GCS they would accept a top 5 pick for Weller. GCS couldn’t trade down and ended up handing over pick 2. Plenty of other Vic suitors we should absolutely hold firm.
If Brisbane progress this week, and Hawks lose to Port, Hawks finish 6th no matter who wins out of Bris v GWS/Swans next week.
So Hawks get 13, loser of Bris vs GWS/Swans gets 14
