Latest news and rumours:

  • List Manager Matt Clarke appeared on Gettable - Click spoiler below for summary
On the draft: "We predicted that the draft was strong, but it's probably gotten stronger during the year."

On top end of draft: "You could probably make five or six different choices and get it right."

On Pick 3: "I reckon there's five (players) around that mark."

On splitting: "I think you want to hold an early selection if you can. The depth of this group allows you to maybe have some movement there, and see what you can do to bring in more talent in the first 20-25 picks. Easier said than done, and I think most clubs would be saying the same thing. We'll see what we can do."

On Liam Baker: "He's still yet to make a decision. They're still weighing up a few things. We'd love to get Liam on board from what he offers from a talent and leadership point of view. We understand where we're at as a group, we're rebuilding our group, we need to add some guys in the middle tier to support our young group."

On Jack Graham: "We've got a number of players that we're speaking to. A bit of a wait and see on that one as well. We'll talk to a number of guys."

On Shai Bolton: "I think it will be difficult for anybody, really. He's heavily contracted and a high quality player."

On James Peatling: "He's heavily involved in a finals series at the moment so I don't want to comment too much on it, but I think there's a number of guys that have been playing really good footy this year that could suit what we do and what other clubs do. He's taken his footy to another level this year."

On Tom Barrass: "We've had an early discussion with Hawthorn about it, they understand where we're at. He's nominated Hawthorn as his ideal destination. We want what we think he's worth, as a genuine key back in the competition that can do what he can do. We're obviously mindful of getting an appropriate deal for West Coast."

On Tom Clurey: "Maybe (note: sounded very non enthused). We'd probably need some key back depth, whether that's through the draft or trade and free agency."

On Jack Darling: "We've had initial discussions with his management group about (moving). We're open to talking, as we are with all of our players, but Jack's contracted with us."

On Liam Ryan: "I expect him to be at West Coast next year, yes." (The most definitive answer of the day by a mile, a non-starter of a talking point.)

On out of contact players e.g. Rotham, Witherden, Jones: "We're still working through what it looks like from a list point of view, and how many selections we'll want to have, and players that may come in and potentially may go out. You might want to give a coach an opportunity to look at these guys."

On Harley Reid: "We've had discussions most of the year with his management group. I think it sits in a really good place. We're open to doing really whatever they want to do to be honest. We're really confident in building the right system around Harley, on and off field, to make sure that he's really comfortable, that he's going to play his best footy, and his long term future."

On Jake Waterman's new deal: "Yep, really close. We're working really closely with his management on that. I expect that we'll have something done pretty soon."

On Oscar Allen: "We've been talking with Oscar and his manager most of the year on that one. We're going through some stuff at the moment. I think we'll be ok with that one."

Our list is in ZERO position to be giving away first and future first rounders. The list is DYING for young gun players.
Surely, we'd use any future picks we get this year for Warner next year. That has to be the smarter call.

On the effect on culture that has been mentioned with regard to big contracts, will be interesting to see what happens when the payday comes for Harley. Surely nobody else on the team is going to begrudge him the $.

Why give away any future picks? As soon as you do that you're taking Warner (however unlikely) joining us the following year off the table.

The hope is that our F1 and Hawks F1 forms the basis of a Warner trade if needed. if not we use the picks.
Let's say we get two firsts for Barrass and do Elite Pete's idea and on-trade the Hawks' F1 to Gold Coast for 13. We take 3, 12, 13 and 23 to the draft this year and we still have 2025 and 2026 first rounders to play with for Warner.

As Clarke said yesterday, there are a few options in front of them for pick 3 this year so I imagine we'll have a few scenarios cooked up for players like Warner this year and next.

Ideally we go into next year with
Pick ~5 (ours), pick ~8 (hawks - if just miss 8 with tough draw/teams catching up to them) and our F1 (2026).

If we could give up Hawks and our 2026 F1 (when we could play finals with Reid/Draper/Warner powering a midfield) for Warner it would be ideal.

Trouble with that is you have no flexibility, it's two years of no first rounders. If you go into next year with 2 first rounders plus 2026 F1 (3 Firsts in total) you have more flexibility whatever happens with Warner.

Getting Warner could be a pipe dream and next years draft could be poor in comparison to this draft. These are all things our recruiting team need to think about.
If we get Warner to commit to coming to us next year, he will be out of contract. In my opinion, **** Sydney and do what Adelaide did to them with Dawson. We will finish at the lower end of the ladder again
Threaten the Pre Season draft!!!!!

True but all I'm getting at is the we'll still have the ability to make that move happen

I know everyone is looking at Hawthorn at the moment and they are probably overrating them a bit, but 1 thing Hawthorn did do really well was move T.Mitchell and O'Meara who didn't fit the new gameplan of hard run and team defence. They didn't overpay veterans to come in and fit around Mitchell and O'Meara and they also didn't overpay veterans to replace them. They focused on the young players on the list and empowered them.

There was a great interview with Will Day last year where he said that Sam Mitchell told the young players that this is their team and the responsibility was on them to perform and work together. I hate the trend of young players at West Coast being dumped on the wing being told to do the defensive running that others choose not to do. I keep hearing West Coast need a defensive mid around the ball, well what about Clay Hall.

At no point during this rebuild has West Coast stripped it back and focused on a sustainable team first gameplan. Far too much effort has put on trying to fit around senior players who pick and choose when they feel like it. What worries me here is that the club is trying to find the next Masten and Hutchings to fill in gaps around Kelly, Ryan, Yeo etc.

What some posters need to get their heads around is that whilst the likes of Parafitt, Carroll and Graham may not be world beaters, they are better quality footballers than some of the guys that will be delisted or traded out.

Trew, Baker, Witherden and Rotham will be replaced by some of the options listed above to draft in.

Sure they are not spectacular upgrades but they are upgrades never the less.
Carroll has more impact in games than Trew, therefore IMO that’s a list improvement.

You need to both improve you list in top end talent and also improve your lists bottom end talent.
Any players that are UFA and are a list upgrade, are a free hit opportunity that should exploited.

Many here bitched and moaned when we added Hunt to the list and he has been a cheap and mature very handy upgrade.

His addition was a smart piece of business.

Came with a mature body, on a modest contract, as a role player and improved our list.
Can we please have some more of this type of player to replace our spuds.

List improvement and upgrades come in many different forms.
Agreed. Now let me ask you this....

How much Wood can a Woodcock Kock, if a Woodcock could Kock Wood?

I think that is worth reminding our self what Melbourne were prepared to pay for Norf's pick 3 last year. They were ready to offer up 6 and 11. Different draft and different shape of prospects but there were seen to be 3 very top end talents in Harley, McKercher and Walter and pick 3 was not getting any of these 3. As it turned out, Dees offer being rejected meant they took Windsor who looks at this stage every bit as good as Duursma, Watson and Sanders. That is pure hindsight, but reflects what clubs will do to get into a perceived higher bracket.

Therefore any offer this year for 3 needs to be equal to at least 6 and 11. Tigers could well hold both these picks losing Bolton and Rioli.

The funny thing about the top 10 is that there are differing views as to who goes where. There are question marks on all of them. Using Cal's latest listing (excl NGA and FS),
Smith - is he too small and does he not kick deep enough
Langford - is he athletic enough
FOS - was 2023 the anomaly and can he get fit
Smillie - is he a man against boys
Reid - will he relocate and was it just the 2H of this year
Draper - is he too safe
Armstrong - if he tall enough
Lalor - can he build a tank and are his hammies a problem
Trainor - is he undersized as a KPD
Allan - is he only a HBF or could he actually play AFL mid
etc

My feeling is that clubs will get enamoured by a particular player (like some of this board with Travaglia) and be prepared to pay a significant premium.

In a possible 3 for 6 and 9or10, I believe we could get a very good partner for Harley in the midfield and then fill another needs. We need outside run, a running defender, an elite ball user off half back, etc.

Keep our powder dry for 2025 and our F1 meaning we have the chance to add 3 or 4 elite midfielders in 3 years.

Look at the list Cal had in August,

From numbers 6 to 14, I certainly could find 2 players I would be happy to get instead of Langford or FOS.

Peatling and 35
For
23?

Giants have a NGA player in the 30s they would want to get in front of
I would happily give up 23 for Peatling plus 35.

The GWS academy prospect is Logan Smith - a 204 cm ruck. I have him as a pick in the 40's so GWS might jump at 23. Pick 35 will start to look like a pick in the 40's with about 5 to 8 prospects having bids matched.

Premiership teams all need players like Huchings and Masten.

But you need to get them cheap in draft capital and salary.

As long as we don't use top picks or big cash what are you worried about that?

I think the concern is the building around Kelly/Yeo/Ryan rather than the chasing Hutchings and Masten.

Basically we are backing in the guys who have failed us to turn the club around.

Largely agree, and although Yeo re-signed shortly after a few god mode games for us, in hindsight I wouldn’t have been sad if he (or Kelly or Ryan) wasn’t at the club next year.

Interesting definition of “nobodies”, they’ve both won two premierships, finished top two in the B&F, Baker’s a current vice captain…
You can be a somebody before you become a nobody. In the spirit of where we are as a club, both are just horrible fits and by the time we are ready to compete would be playing little to no role with us once we get to where we need to be

cripps in his league of his own where he is nether a star or a role player but I don’t think you get the true value of a role player till your side is decent. A lot of role players are spuds in shitty teams

Role players by their definition play a role. If you don’t have the stars doing the heavy lifting those role players are required to do more than their best limited “role”, and get exposed
