Latest news and rumours:

  • Zane Trew, Jamaine Jones and Jordyn Baker delisted

  • List Manager Matt Clarke appeared on Gettable - Click spoiler below for summary
On the draft: "We predicted that the draft was strong, but it's probably gotten stronger during the year."

On top end of draft: "You could probably make five or six different choices and get it right."

On Pick 3: "I reckon there's five (players) around that mark."

On splitting: "I think you want to hold an early selection if you can. The depth of this group allows you to maybe have some movement there, and see what you can do to bring in more talent in the first 20-25 picks. Easier said than done, and I think most clubs would be saying the same thing. We'll see what we can do."

On Liam Baker: "He's still yet to make a decision. They're still weighing up a few things. We'd love to get Liam on board from what he offers from a talent and leadership point of view. We understand where we're at as a group, we're rebuilding our group, we need to add some guys in the middle tier to support our young group."

On Jack Graham: "We've got a number of players that we're speaking to. A bit of a wait and see on that one as well. We'll talk to a number of guys."

On Shai Bolton: "I think it will be difficult for anybody, really. He's heavily contracted and a high quality player."

On James Peatling: "He's heavily involved in a finals series at the moment so I don't want to comment too much on it, but I think there's a number of guys that have been playing really good footy this year that could suit what we do and what other clubs do. He's taken his footy to another level this year."

On Tom Barrass: "We've had an early discussion with Hawthorn about it, they understand where we're at. He's nominated Hawthorn as his ideal destination. We want what we think he's worth, as a genuine key back in the competition that can do what he can do. We're obviously mindful of getting an appropriate deal for West Coast."

On Tom Clurey: "Maybe (note: sounded very non enthused). We'd probably need some key back depth, whether that's through the draft or trade and free agency."

On Jack Darling: "We've had initial discussions with his management group about (moving). We're open to talking, as we are with all of our players, but Jack's contracted with us."

On Liam Ryan: "I expect him to be at West Coast next year, yes." (The most definitive answer of the day by a mile, a non-starter of a talking point.)

On out of contact players e.g. Rotham, Witherden, Jones: "We're still working through what it looks like from a list point of view, and how many selections we'll want to have, and players that may come in and potentially may go out. You might want to give a coach an opportunity to look at these guys."

On Harley Reid: "We've had discussions most of the year with his management group. I think it sits in a really good place. We're open to doing really whatever they want to do to be honest. We're really confident in building the right system around Harley, on and off field, to make sure that he's really comfortable, that he's going to play his best footy, and his long term future."

On Jake Waterman's new deal: "Yep, really close. We're working really closely with his management on that. I expect that we'll have something done pretty soon."

On Oscar Allen: "We've been talking with Oscar and his manager most of the year on that one. We're going through some stuff at the moment. I think we'll be ok with that one."

Peatling. Would want. Surely we can offer much more than gws

Someone said earlier that our offer to him isn’t the highest. Semi disappointed if that is in fact the case

Depends on what the offers were

Whilst we can afford to offer good money to the likes of Peatling, overpaying can be counterproductive

Bringing in players on overpriced salaries distorts what existing players might expect when their contract renewals come up

No point being reckless just because we have cap space

GWS pick Cooper Hynes (not Nick Haynes compo!) with Perryman band 2 compo. Assuming no other compo the next three picks go 23- Richmond, 24- North then 25- WCE. I expect Dodson, Oliver, Sims and O’Farrell to be in the discussion for those picks. Maybe also a bolter like Davis, Dattoli or Hannaford.

You’re probably right about Travaglia, Saints are very keen on him but I think it will be him or Lindsay, can’t see Carlton passing on Berry.
Really need Shanahan , Berry & Hotton gone before our pick

9 you'd lock in before Hawks' current pick 13:
Jagga
Langford
draper
FOS
Lalor
Reid
Smillie
Armstrong
Trainor

3 more (prob 4 if Saints get band 1) to be taken prior to pick 13. Best candidates:
  • Berry
  • Hotton
  • Shanahan
  • Allan
  • Tauru
  • TT
  • Lindsay
If Saints get band 1, then of those 4 picks need 3 to be on Berry, Hotton, Shana, Allan (less likely) or Tauru (less likely), with the other going on either TT or Lindsay, meaning one of TT or Lindsay is left for us.

I reckon its 50/50 one lasts that far.

He is on 800k next year. Its probably not good list management to have 800k player as depth if it can be avoided. Move that money into front loading someone like Oscar next year so we dont have to pay him as much when Harley is out of contract.

I'm guessing its a lesson we learnt the hard way with Gaff this year, but nobody would have taken him at the end of last year.
I'm wondering how we've managed our salary cap so badly that we need to have Jack on $800k next year, given how poor we've been the last 3 years. Where has all the money gone?

I'd much prefer Garcia to Peatling.
Peatling is a fairly low possession type. We have a bit of that already. Think Garcia would compliment our mix a bit more as he seems a more consistent ballwinner.
Plus I'd imagine we're a better chance of landing him given (i) He's West Aussie & (ii) He's down pecking order at dogs (Macrae shift probably helps that a little but Sanders will overtake him soon).

Do I really have to spoon feed the sudden doubters on Peatling by pointing out he was forward tagging Zorko and not actually playing mid or....? 🥄

Anyone who's watched him recently would know he'd be instant best 22 at our club and improve our midfield if we gave him an actual permanent role.

That said I think the whole Peatling discussion is borderline a waste of time from the feedback we've had this far. The loss will only make him want to stay more.

I'm pretty sure darlings contract was back ended- looks horrible now but wasn't a bad deal at the time. If waterman and jilliams didn't come on this year we'd prob not be talking about it

Its his last year on a long term contract . Probably back ended by the look of it .

Our contact and list management has been terrible since we won the flag .

We should have just let gaff walk on his long term deal .

Probably why we won't budge on extending barrass . We have learned hopefully.

The real head scratcher was giving natanui 2 extra years when he was overweight and struggling to get on the park

If Tauru is gone I wonder if WC go with Shanahan with TB 1st and start him down back. We like Vic Country and you'd think he'd be close with Harley too.

Going off where we've recruited from recently and our needs, you'd think Xavier Lindsay, Tauru, Shanahan, Travaglia and Allan would be right up there for our 2nd pick

Getting the feeling that pick 13 Travagalia, Berry and Lindsay will be off the board.

Bo Allen will slide a bit and be there.

Would much prefer Travagalia or Lindsay or Berry.

The way to do it is front end one year and then the remaining years are on par with other players of a similar level. The front loaded 1st year is basically a sign on bonus for moving.

Everyone understands what is going on and why. Then in future years players of similar levels are getting similar ongoing annual salaries

I think Travaglia or Lindsay will be there, especially Lindsay. Richmond may also go early on Hotton, Dodson or Tauru given their likely plethora of early picks and if the Saints don’t get band 1 we may get a choice of either of them.

Was about to post the same. Spent most of his night on Zorko but just seems to make things happen when he’s around the ball. Whether it’s scrapping for the ball or laying a strong tackle. Bloke doesn’t take a backward step.

Would fit in well for us and would get far more time in the middle than he’d get for them. Has been a low possession sort of guy but I think that’s more to do with not having a clear role in the side.

Hey guys, Peatling was forward tagging Zorko, then Bock and Gunston.

Outside of say 10 players id tell the rest this is the offer, take it or leave. In saying that also we need to show some patience too

Only player id offer big overs for salary wise is Peatling and Cumming . A guy like Peatling id just offer a long term deal. If GWS came in with 3, lets offer 5. When you got a terrible list you can definetly offer guys the benefit of time in any deal

Paul Haselby (there’s my disclaimer) reporting Meek was put off signing with us because of Nic Nats contract extension above.
