Yeah because we gave them something when he was worth nothing

For those interested.

The Eagles will hand over their third-round selection in next year's draft while also receiving Hawthorn's 2018 fourth-round pick that the Power received via the Jarman Impey deal .

The Eagles originally offered their fourth round pick in this year's draft, pick No.68 overall, while the Power were holding firm at a third round selection.

That would be awesome but I highly doubt port do that. They missed out on dunkley so phillipou at 9 would be a decent consultation prize
I think Jack Graham would be a consolation prize. Dunkley or Graham are here for the now and with Rioli, they get the role players around teh Duursma/Butters/Rozee that are starting to flourish. Phillipou will take at least a year before he starts at AFL.

I would rather (instead of playing Hunt)
a) pumping games into our youth
b) finding out if our borderline players are deadwood or not so we can cut them next year
c) play Gaff on a wing instead of on-ball

Getting in Hunt for basically 2-4 years will be at the expense (to varying degrees) of any if not all of the above.
I think we already know who are deadwood is....cull now , why wait ?

Get Gaff off the ball and leave him on the wing , an explosive bull in the midfield ( Wardlaw) and a classy speedster ( Hewett). Think Wardlaw and Culley in the middle with Kelly and Hewett as first ball receivers and our midfield will develop nicely even Chesser on the wing and Gaff on the bench looks pretty good to me.

Dunkley is worth pick 12-15 Imo he is very good and could flourish when given more opportunity.

Graham is worth a 3rd rounder . Role player at best

Trade Radio with Rendell and Sos gave the eagles and senior players a good whack about weight and fitness. Think they a actually got it right.
Honestly don’t think they know a lot about the eagles list and where it needs to go but our biggest issue in S&C or lack of it was even obvious even to them.

Gaff couldn’t run out of sight on a dark night last year he needs to get his body right, drop 3-5kgs and get his run back to 2018 levels

He won't get there, he has slowed down and won't get any faster. His one pace game ( yes not fast) is at least backed up by the fact he can run at that one pace all day. Or just put him in the magoos and have Chesser and JJ on the wings.

Mainly cause he’s to heavy and fitness is not up to afl level. Stay out of the gym(no weights) and just get the legs back he’s not 35 years old he’s 30.
Look at a photo of gaff this year compared to 2018 you will see how much he has bulked up. Same can be said for a number of his mates

Some logic in that....we are still looking at him as if he is a walk up starter in the side. Chess and JJ on the wings and make Gaff take the spot

Gaff i would give a pass as he has always turned up in top shape but he had serious niggles in the pre-season which is persisted with and he it showed with his running capacity.

I hope the talk of Jayden Hunt is a no go.

Haven't ventured into the Luke Jackson thread but today's paper reckons that Melbourne want two first round picks and a second round pick 🤔 OR two picks in the top ten 🤔.
I'm not sure about that but at least WCE are out of consideration ....

Brisbane pushing for Bowes and pick 7 now

The longer this goes the less attractive Bowes will become as clubs get in a bidding war for what they’ll offer for Bowes and pick 7. Initially it was being reported as if there was no requirement for a club to offer anything in return other than taking on Bowes contract

It was always a too good to be true deal and clubs will offer something to get ahead of each other. Most likely GC will be looking for future picks which will ultimately rule us out - we could offer a future 2nd but clubs expecting to reach finals would be happy to offer their future 1st. Us to offer a future 1st would be silly

Still would be hoping we at least contact Bowes to gauge interest

Brisbane pushing for Bowes and pick 7 now

Interesting move. Tom Berry is a surprise as he hasn't played much football and I thought he was a shadow of his older brother. Confusing by Suns.

Pick 7 and Bowes makes a lot of sense. Local Qld lad and adds to the depth in a contender.

Pick 7 adds them 1,644 points and could be the top 10 pick that gets Dunkley

In
Bowes including excess of $850k over 2 years salary dump
Dunkley with pick 7
Ashcroft - 2,400 points to match
Fletcher - around 750 points to match
Pick 34 compensation for MacStay

Out
MacStay
Matching points
  • pick 15 worth 1,112 points for about 1,600 points
  • pick 33 worth 563 points
  • pick 34 worth 542 points
  • pick 44 worth 362 points
  • pick 69 worth 49 points
A future second rounder to Suns - pick 33 will get them say Suns pick 31 of 606 points
(above points tally is 3,234 means that they will have enough points

So no need for selling Robertson
I would expect this means a very tight salary cap

Didn’t say anything that hasn’t been covered here 1000 times and as is his way showed his own laziness in knowledge of our club

Pegged Gov for being overweight which simply wasn’t true if you’d watched our preseason and his form pre injury was actually pretty good (was leading our B&F) when he got hurt

Yeo, yes he was overweight but he also couldn’t run for about 2 months or more. He was actually training well in December before injury got him again

He forgot we had pick 20

One thing he did say that got my interest was his comments around his time at St Kilda and their new fitness coach. Said that to get their players fit couldn’t be done in 1 year as the work he needed to put in him would break them and that happened. But then the following year it paid off

Now Mark Duffield has said he believed West Coast upped their training last preseason after watching Melbourne and the Bulldogs train in prep for the GF. And the players broke down during the season

Maybe there’s a parallel there. Hope so

Yeah I’m not sure how they can even fit Dunkley and Bowes into their cap considering Ashcroft also will sign a 4 year deal etc.

Brisbanes pick 15 being up for sale though is good news for us imo depending on what it’d cost.

No club outside Victoria has been linked

Just why that is I don’t know but I suspect it has something to do with most trade talk being generated from Victorian based media

Brisbane have now joined the race …. They want pick 7 to help get their targets.
Ashworth
Fletcher
Dunkley.

Ashcroft will only get the standard first and second year salaries - clubs cannot pay more. His 4 year deal will have years 3 and 4 only as being negotiated.

As few as 50 players could be selected in this year’s AFL national draft as clubs increasingly shift their focus to what shapes as bumper crop of draftees in 2023.
Multiple clubs are planning to use just one or two draft selections this year, while there is little willingness to trade out future picks in the early rounds of next year’s draft.

Couple of things
1) If there’s that few draftable players this year it goes some way to explaining why we may not have cut as deep into our list as some would’ve liked
2) A big no to trading future picks and given a choice I’m leaning towards ports future 2nd for Rioli rather than the Amon compo pick assuming that’ll be 27. If I was greedy I’d be asking for 27 and swapping our future 3rd for Ports future 2nd

Rendall was a year ahead of the curve. They replayed what he said this time last year and it was rinse and repeat. Fat, unfit. Lazy… nailed it
