Couple of things
1) If there’s that few draftable players this year it goes some way to explaining why we may not have cut as deep into our list as some would’ve liked
2) A big no to trading future picks and given a choice I’m leaning towards ports future 2nd for Rioli rather than the Amon compo pick assuming that’ll be 27. If I was greedy I’d be asking for 27 and swapping our future 3rd for Ports future 2nd
On 1) - I'm hoping that the cuts we have made are just round 1. If that's all we're doing that's not even scratching the surface. There's still a few on there that I'd rather see replaced with speculative picks this year.
On 2) - Abso-****ing-lutely

There’s still Naish, Witherden, West, Winder and Trew without contracts for next year

I can only see probably 1, or at most 2, of that group being offered a new contract.

I think we already know who are deadwood is....cull now , why wait ?

Get Gaff off the ball and leave him on the wing , an explosive bull in the midfield ( Wardlaw) and a classy speedster ( Hewett). Think Wardlaw and Culley in the middle with Kelly and Hewett as first ball receivers and our midfield will develop nicely even Chesser on the wing and Gaff on the bench looks pretty good to me.
100% agree

Draft Wardlaw and Hewett this year!

Hewett will go at pick 7-10, so we need to get creative!

Didn’t say anything that hasn’t been covered here 1000 times and as is his way showed his own laziness in knowledge of our club

Pegged Gov for being overweight which simply wasn’t true if you’d watched our preseason and his form pre injury was actually pretty good (was leading our B&F) when he got hurt

Yeo, yes he was overweight but he also couldn’t run for about 2 months or more. He was actually training well in December before injury got him again

He forgot we had pick 20

One thing he did say that got my interest was his comments around his time at St Kilda and their new fitness coach. Said that to get their players fit couldn’t be done in 1 year as the work he needed to put in him would break them and that happened. But then the following year it paid off

Now Mark Duffield has said he believed West Coast upped their training last preseason after watching Melbourne and the Bulldogs train in prep for the GF. And the players broke down during the season

Maybe there’s a parallel there. Hope so
Perhaps we need to be more accepting of criticism from outsiders. Gov always looks fat.

hey briztoon - how are Brisbane able to think about bringing in Gunston (UFA) which will effectively wipe out a lot of any McStay compo?

Your club is trying to get Dunkley in the door and both Ashcroft and Fletcher as F/S. A big ask this year.

Without the McStay compo, you only have 2,086 points in 2022 and roughly 1,983 in 2023. I had thought that the Lions would get a real advantage in selling off pick 15 at a premium, but that pick will need to be the centrepiece of the Dunkley deal so the 500 point premium vanishes.

Ashcroft and Fletcher are likely to cost around 3,100 points (already discounted 20%) meaning roughly 1,050 points to get Dunkley and that is about pick 16. That would be your picks of value for the next 2 drafts. I am assuming you finish the same place in 2023

How do you see Lions getting Gunston, Ashcroft and Fletcher?
This probably answers the question.

We send Tom Berry and our future 2nd and 3rd round picks to Gold Coast. We get back Jack Bowes and pick 7.

We send 7 & 44 to the Bulldogs for Dunkley and 29.

Winder ?. I'm told he is only being kept because Rioli is going otherwise he would of been delisted. He is still touch n go to get delisted. Said to be a bit lazy.

I’ve been saying that for most of this year.

My perspective is the talent really drops early in the second round this year.

There were kids picked in the second round of last year’s draft, from 21 to 30, that are better than kids projected I the later half of the first round this year.

Would leave you with 15,33,34 (McStay compo unless you get lucky and get end of 1st round) to bid on Ashcroft and Fletcher.

Leaves you 183 short of matching a bid on Ashcroft at pick 1, and then whatever Fletcher is bid on

Robertson for 26 gets you an extra 729 points. 😎

I think Jack Graham would be a consolation prize. Dunkley or Graham are here for the now and with Rioli, they get the role players around teh Duursma/Butters/Rozee that are starting to flourish. Phillipou will take at least a year before he starts at AFL.
The deal would be great for us but clubs don't give up top 10 picks for scraps. Will never happen.

You missed where I said we get Dunkley and 29.

2023 draft in high in KPP and ruckman we need midfielders so 2022 is okay for WCE .

2023 top 20 midfielder prospects:

Reid
McKercher
Hardeman
Duursma
Rogers
Ridgeway
Roberts
Lorenz
Molan
Frangalas

By this time next year that list will grown, but thats 10 names already.

No shortage of good quality mids in 2023.

I saw that

Then forgot about it. Oops

Leaves you with 470 towards what you need for Fletcher. Arguably puts you close enough to just take the deficit into next year on your 1st round pick I guess

Unless you lose the McStay compo when you bring in Gunston

Rogers is GC academy.

I haven’t looked at the father son kids next year, but there’s probably 5 northern academy kids in the top 40 (GC 3, GWS 1, Syd 1).

Dont take this the wrong way, but I ****ing hope not.

WB to ask for 7 and 33, leaving us to come in and offer Pick 38 for Dev ;)

Say it’s a short draft with only 60 picks taken to the draft.

Our second and third picks will slide back to 59 (158) and 60 (146), and gain the points associated with those picks.

Pick 34 slides back to around pick 38 or 39.

That’s going to give us around 770 points towards matching the Fletcher bid.

But when the bid for Fletcher comes in, it won’t be known how many picks are going to be taken so will it being a short draft make any difference?

Or does any deficit only get calculated after the draft is complete - I’m not up to full speed on how the deficit works

Trade Radio with Rendell and Sos gave the eagles and senior players a good whack about weight and fitness. Think they a actually got it right.
Honestly don’t think they know a lot about the eagles list and where it needs to go but our biggest issue in S&C or lack of it was even obvious even to them.
I f$&&ing hate agreeing with Rendall; his assessment of our list was spot on. For the 2nd year in a row 😔
