Regarding Redden's retirement - I feel like the club and administration's failures have now resulted in a 31 year old who was still going strong and was one of our best players this season having to prematurely move on in life.
Not sure why we're acting like rejuvenating the list means getting rid of 31 year olds that are amongst our best. There's some real immature thinking in here about what a rebuild looks like. It doesn't have to look like that. If we are moving players on then it shouldn't be performing 31 year olds.

I know he 'retired' but I would suggest he was pushed rather than he jumped.

Idiot Alert : The below post is total crap (Keys)

Fox sports says West Coast have traded for North's 1 pick in the PSD so that they can get Narkle.

Make of that what you will.

Not sure what you'd be trading for pick 1 but I think Witherton would be a good get for Clarko. He likes good ball users. I've also heard whispers that witherton would like to get back to Victoria.

North: Witherton
West Coast: Narkle
Geelong: Bruhn

While I like Redden and he was still best 22 its not like he was a superstar and winning us games. He was a reliable footsoldier. I feel its the perfect time for him to step down as we need to blood young guys. There's still a few seniors that will playing and we cant play them all.

And you can't think of any older, less-durable players that could have made way instead?
Not like I'm suggesting we should be booting any of them but just pointing out the inconsistentcy in the arguement.

He's an absolute finals hero - deserved to go on.

I'm not saying he didn't retire - but there are amicable and friendly conversations that can take place that lead to a retirement.

Redden still had good football in him and previously had stated he was eager to continue.

He’d hit his trigger so he was entitled to a new contract if he wanted it.

Not sure what the club could have said in “amicable and friendly conversations” to dissuade him from taking it up, other than telling him he’d be playing WAFL. Which he’d already said he’d be willing to do.

Ryan Daniels’ tweets said the club was surprised at his decision. That seems more likely to me than your suggestion that they were behind the whole thing.

I never thought it was going to be end of first round.

The system is what it is.

You might not have, but it seemed to be a fairly popular theory. It was probably always going to be one or the other, same as Amon.

The difference between Category 2 compo and Category 3 compo is a lot more pronounced when you make a prelim. I know the system is supposed to be set up to help out struggling teams more than teams that make prelims, but that ends up being hugely dependent on where the AFL assesses compo based on its top secret magic formula.

now naish gone as well. How many spots do we now have on our list?

Main list can be 36 to 38 and rookie list 4 to 6. Total can't exceed 42.

At present they are at 38 in total, 34 on the main list and 4 rookies.

Winder, Witherden, Hurn and Rioli are uncontracted for next year from the main list and Trew and West from the rookie list

Redden was one of our oldest mids. Only Shuey is older by 4 months but is almost doubling him in clearances. Its not that big a deal he is moving on whether its his choice or not.
