Anyone questioning the recruitment of hunt +\- narkle forgets that Simpson is coaching for his career at the expense of complete rebuild. Would you prefer wooden spoon and pick 1 or a bit more fight and pick 1-6?

Hunt and Narkle will absolutely save Simpson's career by helping us go from 2 wins to 8 wins AND an extra 30% (what we would have needed to get Pick 6 this year).

Culley is good overhead and can clunk a mark, makes him dangerous drifting or resting forward.
Agreed,He's always been a forward, its only his recent transition to a mid thats seen this improvement.
With a preseason or 2 under is belt he'll be a beast

Good move to transfer out Naish for Hunt

I think there should be a premium account for the best limerick to welcome Jayden to the club. Keys - can you manage that?
Hunt
Rhymes with campaigner
Opposition attacks he will stunt
Then make like Willie and smoke a blunt

Some of this questioning of recruitment decisions as Simmo out to save his skin is truly bizarre.

-"Simmo's getting in players from other teams to save his skin, sack Simmo!"

-"Can't believe we finished in 14th. That's no man's land, sack Simmo!"

-"We're shit and need a complete rebuild. Sack Simmo!"

-"Can't believe we finished last, sack Simmo!"

-"We need the best draft picks possible, however we finished last. Sack Simmo!"

Make up your ****ing minds please.

Out of the uncontracted players apart from Hurn will be offered a contract, we can really only keep one of West, Winder & Witherden (or none of them).
We'll have 33 contracted players inc Hurn + Hunt as an FA & at least 4 draftees.
That may only leave us with only 4 more spots.
Trew should be gone & Rioli will be traded.
Maximum of one of the 3 W's re-signed will leave us with only 3 more spots.
We can get another player or 2 drafted or traded in, plus at least 1 rookie from the rookie draft or the SSP.
With still 1 or 2 players needing to be demoted to the rookie list depending on if we retain West.
Perhaps we haven't delisted those 3 players in case another team sniffs around. I would imagine only Witho could possibly attract some slight interest, but still unlikely.

Consensus seems to be "Sack Simmo" but Nissy ain't listening.

Exactly. We don’t need a complete rebuild by dumping everyone. The clubs that do so rotate between bottom and mid table. The smart clubs refresh by doing what we seem to be doing now. In any draft year a club is lucky to get two top shelf players by drafting. To go and draft 5 kids and play them in a team with no experienced players won’t work. With half an ounce of luck we have a decent team next year as we bring through some new kids, some recycled buys and our seniors and a have a competitive season while regenerating the list.

My problem is we are paying simmo premium dollars to rebuild when we could bring in a new coach and 4 development coaches for the same price.

Seems like a poor allocation of resources

With Hurn still anticipated to sign for another year and Hunt coming in we’ll have 33 on the main list and one rookie (Culley)

Gives us the ability to use up to 5 draft picks and/or use one of them to trade in a Robertson or Sharp or Bowes in the unlikely event any of them want to come to West Coast

I’d want to use at least one live rookie draft pick (pick 2)

Leaves 2 spots to choose between Witherden, Trew, West, Winder, Narkle or another rookie selection/DFA.

If we only use 4 draft picks which is possible then there’ll be another spot available

We’ve got plenty of experience:
Naitanui
Shuey
Hurn
Yeo
Sheed
Kelly
Gaff
Barrass
Duggan
McGovern
Cole
Cripps
Ryan
Darling

How hard is it to understand that we need to allow room for young players to develop?

The likes of Hunt and Narkle are likely to deprive young players of opportunity.

What position do you see Hunt playing for us?
HBF or HFF.

We just lost 2 HBFs, maybe 3 if Witherden goes, so we need coverage that isn't a skinny kid with no AFL exposure.

Rioli's also going and Hunt's played HFF before. A better option than Langdon, for sure.

Also actually adds pace. Something we've been complaining about for a few seasons now.

Sure, he's potentially not in the age bracket for our next shot at a flag but we still need quality depth and he provides that, for pretty much free.

But how are his angles? are they crazy enough?

Or we could hold the line like Sydney did, hope we draft well and have a premiership coach lead us through till our next tilt.

No guarantees ofcourse and if we don't show improvement next year he is probably gone but we could just as easily bring in new coaches that completely bugger up the development of our young kids.

Easy to hold the line when you have a stack if discounted academy talent already at your club and in the pipeline

I think he’s earmarked for a defensive role. We’ve got Hurn, Duggan, Cole, Bazzo, Hough, Jones, Rotham, Foley, Chesser and perhaps Witherden fighting for the roles in defence that aren’t key positions. Sometimes we may play Harry Edwards too. That’s plenty.

Hunt’s unproven as a HFF and we haven’t had great results trying to convert players into forwards. Generally you need specialist forwards to play those roles.

Does Hunt improve our best 22 next year? He possibly does, although his stats this year are pretty uninspiring. But my objection is that he gets in the way of the development of young players, which is an urgent need. If he was 25 years old, he’d be a possible part of the solution, at 28 he’s just getting in the way.

Trew and West are both Rookies so doesn't really impact our recruitment too much.

The maximum list size for AFL clubs is 44, including up to two category B rookies, since changes were made in late 2020. The combination ranges from 36-38 senior-listed players, then between four and six category A rookies, while category B rookies can increase a list to 44.

33 contracted players give us the option, as you say, to use up to 5 draft picks and/or use one of them to trade in a Robertson or recruit Narkle as a DFA.
Could keep Culley, one of Trew/West and drop Winder down to a Rookie leaving us with 1 Cat A rookie picks and 2 Cat B spots. .

But the rule that allowed clubs to move primary-listed players to the rookie list between the first and second list lodgment periods to open up senior spots will not be permitted this off-season. They will, however, be able to shift players on the senior list to the rookie list in the time between the national and rookie drafts if the player is contracted for 2023.

Doesn't bode well for Witho.

So in Summary
33 Contracted for Main List
36-38 senior-listed players allowed
Up to 5 spots available
1 contracted Cat A Rookie
Up to 5 spots available if we go with a 36 man Main list
2 Cat B Rookie spots available.

Getting in the way of who exactly?

Not much point in just drafting a kid with pick 80, simply because we actually need to fill up list spots.

Club will give every chance to the likes of Culley, Bazzo, Chesser, Hough etc. Not sure who he would be keeping out.

The rest need to earn their spot like the aforementioned players did.

Getting in the way of Hough, Chesser and Bazzo. I’d much prefer to see them get games before Hunt.

It seems we’re a world apart as far as vision for the club. Agree to disagree.

I've heard Devon isn't too keen to move to the west because he'd have to change his name to Polony
