Looks like we intend using 4 picks in the draft - 8,12,20,26.

Assuming Hurn does eventually re-sign as expected but not officially confirmed, we have 34 contracted players, of which only Culley is on the rookie list

After the main draft we’ll have 4 overall list spots - 1 main/3 rookies or 4 rookies

Witherden, Winder, West(R) and Trew (R) are still uncontracted as far as we know, although Witherden’s status is unclear.

I can see us using 3 picks in the rookie draft, one or two of which might be used to redraft from that quartet

Leaving one spot open for a train on player to be selected as a DFA or SSP selection

Not sure if this idea has been floated yet (only on page 410 currently) but if Mackenzie is there at 8 would StK be desperate enough for him to do something like 9 & 28 or F2 for 8? Not sure if we’d need to sweeten it with a F3 or something. Feel like they might do F2 backing themselves to finish higher next year, which I struggle to see happening.

Go in with 9, 12, 20, 26 & 28 or F2 next year

But if we got 28 the haul could look like
9 & 12 would see 2 of Phillipou, Ginbey, Hewett, Humphrey, Hotton, Hollands
And 20, 26, 28 a mix of Hustwaite, Konstanty, Jones, Cowan, Barnett, George, Burgiel, Szybkowski, Keeler or Weddle

I think we will do something like
8 - Busslinger
12 - Hewett
20 - Keeler
26. - Cowan( not sure he'll last)

8&12 could go either way, I figure we take buss first given he is best kpd. Hopefully Hewett is still there (Geelong are a threat for Buss but should take Clark, though Hewett
could be gone too)
I have Keeler and Cowan as sliders, project ruck and best hbf

If we could trade 26 and ports future 2nd for somewhere between 12-20 then we just about guarantee those 4. This gives best kpd, WAs best mid, best hbf, best potential ruck/fwd from the draft Then add in Hunt Culley, Chesser, Allen that gives us plenty to be excited about.

And whilst we're talking draft I still think Wardlaw goes before Cadman. Which could mean Nth go Cadman and Busslinger for key posts🤔

WC don't have the balls to even grab SA blokes now.
Phillipou did do an interview this year where when questioned on moving interstate didn’t exactly sound let’s say thrilled about it.
However I’m sure with both port and the crows being out of the first round he will have got his head around having to leave SA. I think if he’s the best available the club needs to back itself in to retain him.

I’m sure McKenzie would be on the saints radar and would be keen to get him so what your suggesting is possible.

Then again he might be on our radar to he does have some elite parts to his game.

Was interesting that the club seemed so desperate for the 8 & 12 deal there’s obviously a few players in that range they are very interested in and I don’t believe they would be simply just WA boys.

Clarke, Phillipou, McKenzie, Ginbey, Hewitt, Hollands, Hotton, Busslinger and Humphrey. All those guys have a chance of being around at pick 8 and some will still be there at 12.

9-Phillipou
13-Hewett
22-Jones
28-Keeler/Allen

Very hard to predicted a month out and will be reaches and players that fall.

Hold all picks for next year. We have enough to get excited about and GC will be flicking picks here and there depending how their NGA players look. More picks tge more we can try and take advantage of this.

12 months to go in his contract. So a free shot to see how it works.

The days of going full rebuilds are done.

The Pies jumped back very quickly and their top 5 of their bnf were the older blokes. I think we can do the same with a change of game plan and some luck with injures. Golden State Warriors style, just count this as our gap year likely they had.

I’m not stoked with losing pick 2.

However part of me also knows we are at a stage, having blown our draft load on Kelly in the past, where we are in need of quantity of talent as much as quality.

This is O’Brien admitting his faults with the Kelly trade and trying to recoup some talent.

I did have a chuckle reading some facebook comments on JHF.

"Mummy can now breast feed him on the bench"
Childish, he was in business discussions with port six months ago. He has lef a coaches club that will sit at the bottom of the ladder for some time to join a club the looks to play finals regularly (for big cash)

who is analysing what clubs have in relative terms strengthened their list, stabilised and slid down. Relative terms is the key as it is a competition. We look more of a slider.

Stronger so far at a glance look to be Port, Melbourne if they get Grundy, Geelong, Freemantle, GWS with a big rebuild, ??.
Sydney have stabilised with long term signings of good kids, Pies are hard to fathom??

Agree to disagree, west coast always knew his preference was to stay in Melbourne. That would not be unusual. Ollie Wines wanted to stay in Melbourne as well. Sometimes you've just got to back your culture in.

And this is not the time to do that.

Lets be honest, the culture at the Eagles is at an all time low and needs rebuilding. The list has holes everywhere and likely we have a couple of tough years ahead. Our reserve side is a joke and borderline disfunctional.

We can take those risks with a top pick in a year or two. Lets build the foundations for the next 10 years.

One pick 3 isnt going to fix all that, not in this cohort. Something the doubters keep ignoring.

The cake is half baked ATM.

And for us to slide we have to beworse than North. Who just lost a alleged generational talent.

We draft 10 + year players hopefully. It takes a season or two to mature most tallent. B graders like Sheed are lovely fellows but when they compete agaist the best they are fodder. You assessment of culture is probably on the money but why perpetuate the issue. The best lead and set examples - the others follow. We have a team of followers. Look at Danger and Sellwood, Dusty, Melbourne's mids, Neil, Freeo's gun mids, the Bont and Cripps. Thats wherer the contests are won and led.
