Rohan O'brien on TR unlikely to be involved in J Sharpe trade back to WA .

Eagles draft hand finalised after yesterday's mega trade .

Hurn away at the minute but Yes Hurn expected to play on in 2023 .

Rohan impressive and measured.

Trading 40 for F3 better be worth it (deeper draft etc).
If we hypothetically hold picks 4, 22, 30 (Port), 40 & 48 (Port), we may not even use the Port F3 depending on list spots.
But should have plenty to clear out along with Hurn & Shuey retirements.

According to the most keen draft followers, it will be. Of course once you get to picks in the 30s it becomes more of a crapshoot but I'd make that trade all the time if what those draft followers say is true - the worst it could be is pick 54 but this would be Port winning the flag (lol)

The Port F3 can still be traded and as you correctly pointed out we're expecting Hurn and Shuey to call it quits after 2023. Accumulating future picks without giving up our own is a good rebuild strategy - that Port F2 in particular was an astute trade, realistically prying away theirs or North's F1 was never a reasonable chance.

Some interesting thoughts on your board

Personally, given the evenness at all levels of this draft, the move to trade back is a great decision

Puts you in the slot for homegrown talent, with 2 picks rather than 1. Even if you are looking at players from other states, at picks 8 and 12, that talent is not that dissimilar in quality to the pointy end

The bonus of adding future picks while retaining your future 1st is also massive

Well done

Sounded more like a broken record script reading

Cal Twoomey on trade radio suggesting Hewitt could be there at our pick 20?

Also that Gibney won't last past the top ten.

So looks like we would have to go one one Gibney or Phillipou?

Oh how I would love Phillipou, Ginbey and Hewitt!!!

Cal has definitely bumped Ginners up his order and cooled massively on Hewitt. Unsure if that's the general consensus, though.

Now that we've secured ourselves 4 picks inside the top 30 this year, is there some chance we package up a few of our new 2023 picks to someone like GC Suns who need points, and try to take a few real quality selections over quantity selections next year?

What would it look like?

And who might be on the way out in 2023 that has currency to play elsewhere?

Gee whiz, imagine our medical staff trying to deal with urinary tract infections for the new kids next year. That's all we need.

I expect our medical staff are brilliant on the whole warfarin vs pradaxa type issues.

On the rehabbing hamstrings, treating stress fractures front...not so much.

Am I wrong to hope we finish bottom 4 again so we can see some change in the club?
I've tried starting a conversation under the 'Age v youth' thread that shows we have a serious selection problem next year. I've listed 19 players the MC seems to consider our best - with 11 currently 27 or more. (NB: the MC not me.) And this doesn't include Hough or Bazzo (or Petro or Rotham) or draftees getting games. That means in total 'the future' gets three games a round (plus injuries) - unless the MC 'manage' some of these 19.

Sure we'll have injuries but unless it is another debacle like this year then almost all 'the future' will only get a game here or there.

Was reading an interesting post of Reddit on regards to the possible slide of Hewitt.

Not good if true?

Not sure if I should be excited or concerned about the prospect of Busslinger being there at 8 and possibly even 12.

On the one hand he is rated 6-8 in many circles, and clearly the best intercept defender this year. Has been spoken about around here for a while as quality.

On the other hand he plays the only position that is not a need for us. We have 4 players for key defence, and only one of those is 30 (31 at the start of next season, so you would expect he's got 2-3 more seasons).

I'd say replacing Darling is much more of a need than replacing Gov (just purely because of what we have on our list now) - so for the junior footy watchers, do any of these players have the possibility (or junior history) of playing as a key forward (I know Barrass has been floated as an option, but that is robbing peter to pay paul):

HEdwards
Bazzo
Busslinger

HEdwards would be the ideal one - as he is tall enough to play 2nd ruck also as a chop-out, but I think from memory he was more of a mid through to U16's or so when he had a growth spurt?

State of play -

We had 37 on the main list at end of the season and 8 on the Rookie list (Sheppard is already taken out)
We have lost 4 off the main list (JK, Redden. Nelson, Rioli) plus upgraded Jones to be 34
We have lost 4 from the Rookie list plus upgraded Jones to be at 3

Therefore total list as it stands today is 37. Max is 42 and we have 4 picks inside 30 to take in the draft.

Hurn has not signed on but The Pieman says he is playing, paperwork to follow

Out of contract therefor are : -
Winder and Witherden on the senior list
West and Trew on the Rookie list

I also have 2 players I would propose to downgrade to the rookie list in Foley and Langdon. Why? Max out the use of the rookie list and salary cap gain from doing that. It also sends a warning shot - you two lads are going to need to step up to stay on the list at the end of 2023. Some tough love input. We need these 2 to play at WAFL like they are playing for their careers.

At the national draft, we take 5 picks. I suggest it is 8, 12, 20, 26 plus a late pick. A Broadbent or Foster or Gilbey may well be there.
We add 3 rookies (whether it is at the rookie draft, delisted free agents, train on, SPD, etc) and West, Witherden, Trew and Winder are in the mix but will compete with other prospects. Time to be selective.

I expect the most pushback on this forum about my treatment of West - with Culley, Chesser, our midfield priorities in 8/12/20 and Clark, I think we have enough cover. He tries hard and is depth but not AFL standard.

We also bring in Dewar as a Cat B - this gives us a small forward as a real option and I think he goes undrafted.

That would bring us to 43 including the Cat B and we are full.

Cal is not a big on assessing talent - he is big on listening to recruiters.

Therefore is he is cooling on Hewett, then there is less interest in him.

I suspect either St Kilda or Carlton are interested in Ginbey. Not in the know, just postulating.

Busslinger is an absolute given that he will be selected if available. And he is the wrong pick for us given our needs

Factoring in how O'brien likes to draft, you think he is going to pass on the best (undersized) key backman who is a local product?

No chance. O'Brien likes backmen as much as he likes pies

I want Phillipou.

Dunno why. Just reckon he'll be a gun

There's a comment around behavioural issues driving a change of schools between y11 and 12 for Hewett on r/westocasteagles. Couldn't say how accurate it is but have definitely seen players slip for such things and with more scrutiny than ever on clubs could be a consideration.

I think we should be holding off until 20 for Hewett, not for this reason but moreso on exposed form.
I believe the Hewett's family moved and hence went from Guildford to Scotch. He is now out of school and not sure whether he is studying or not.

The change in schools did not seem to impact him in 2021 - his finish to the season and his Colts GF was brilliant.

Let us hope that this is there is some worries on him and that he slides. All the way to 20 please. Maybe through to 26 and replicate the Jack Darling story.

With Freo having Erasmus and Johnson from the 2021 draft, I cannot see them pouncing early. Their first pick is 44 but they may well get something back for Lobb or Meeks that gets them in earlier. Not a need for them.

There are 5 Sydney/GWS picks between our 12 and 20 so I cannot see either club taking that risk.

So what are the odds we don't end up with Gibney and Hewett if they're available at our picks?'

I expect the most pushback on this forum about my treatment of West - with Culley, Chesser, our midfield priorities in 8/12/20 and Clark, I think we have enough cover. He tries hard and is depth but not AFL standard.

Not against. Clark vs West for that mature WAFL-level depth as the kids come through and the oldies retire, and Clark is contracted.
