I have to ask the question - where is this perceived idea that we're scared of drafting interstate kids and only draft local kids coming from?

I've done an analysis of all of our draft picks in the Adam Simpson era - see below.

32 draft selections in total, 15 from WA which represents 46.9% of all draftees coming from WA. Hardly confirms that we are fearful of drafting interstate kids like I'm reading so much of.

A few interesting things:

- The last 3 years it's been 80% drafted from WA, but you must also consider that we've only had 3 picks in the top 40 in that time

- Speaking of when the picks have occurred, it is worth noting what the splits look like when we focus on picks in the top 40, versus later round picks (when it makes a lot more sense to take fliers on local talent that other clubs may not have spent as much time and resource scouting)

- Of the 32 picks, 18 have occurred in the top 40, whilst 14 have occurred after this

- Of the top 40 picks, 8 of 18 are from WA (44.4%), and if we just look at top 30 (where all our selections will likely be this upcoming draft), only 2 of our 8 selections (25%) are from WA (Oscar Allen and Liam Ryan), which suggests the higher our picks, the less likely we are to draft WA kids

- Longer range speculative picks from 41 and above, it's 50% from WA and 50% from interstate (but a lot more WA focused in the last few years

- The biggest takeaway is that of our 8 selections since 2014 that have occurred in the top 30 of the draft, just 2 have been from WA, compared to 6 from interstate. Something to consider when we try to project who we're going to take with 8, 12, 20 and 26 in about 6 weeks time.

The media adding 2+2 together and coming up with 37

• A higher of average number of players playing the go home card when asking for trades this year, including one who got homesick living an hour down the road from home
• The top half dozen draft prospects being Victorian, including a couple who’ve been less than enthusiastic at the possibility of leaving Victoria
• West Coast splitting their high draft pick into 2 at a draft range that includes the 3 most highly rated WA players. Never mind that it also includes another half dozen or so Vic/SA kids

Add all that up and it equals WA bring scared of the go home factor and will focus on local talent

Doesn’t matter if it’s true or not

Yeah 110%, I don’t think the Dogs will send him to the PSD anyway. Brisbanes offer is s**t but turning down 21 and a future 1st out of spite isn’t very smart.
It is a gutsy move taking him to the PSD. Norf have loads of cap space and can afford him.

21 and a F1 (say at 15) rates it at pick 5 for points. Having blocked Dunkley 2 years ago, the asking price of 2 x first rounders for an uncontracted player seems steep, especially without picks coming back.

Conversely, Lions have been trying to bite off more than they can afford. It still peeves me that the AFL haven't closed the loophole on UFA's and trading for them to protect compensation. If I was up to me, I would say compensation not allocated until after the trade period and any UFA is assumed to be free, whether a token pick or multi trade is used.

Glad our business is done.

If you needed any more proof this is a mickey mouse league.
Doesn’t this sort of thing throw the integrity of the trade period in the air?

If they aren’t being processed till the afternoon then there’s a chance that something that was agreed upon early in the day is second guessed by one of the clubs involved, with more time to think it over, and they pull out, when the trade would have been signed and sealed had they done it hours before.

The draft lists for previous years really does show it is hard to get better than two good players in any given year. The idea of building entirely through the draft is a fraught approach.

That horse has well and truly bolted, so long ago that the horse has now gotten across the border and is living under an assumed identity in a non-extradition country.

You cannot downgrade a player from the National Draft in their initial 2 year contract - so no to Clark. You can with Langdon and Foley - you just run the risk that they get picked up as a delisted free agent prior to the rookie draft. And you run the risk that the club needs to pay the top up of any lost salary if offered less from another club that picks them up

Woo. What? If someone else picks them up we need to pay the difference in wages?

That is plain stupid.

Dont they put terms on being redrafted?

Suns eyeing Ginbey apparently, personally I do hope he’s gone before our pick because I’d much prefer Humphries or Phillipou over him

The best thing to do would be to grab a slider in this scenario but I dont trust the club at all with recent drafting as we have looked over sliders before (grabbing Chesser instead of Johnson last draft etc).

I’m gonna giggle really hard if literally nothing happens at this poxy draft night event

“Err yeah a lot happening here but nothing’s been finalised with three seconds left in the period”

“What a great night it was”

* off
The worst was one year when they let Hawthorn do a trade after the deadline because of the logjam that came in from the embargo.
