So the Brisbane first round pick has dropped in value by beating Richmond. No longer 12, it becomes more like 14 meaning more affordable for us to move up the board
The only problem is that they will trade it pre draft (I.e. want nominal pick 14 value plus a bit extra) but it will be at least 15 maybe 16 after f/s selection/s.

Unfortunately it may be a scenario if needing to get it pre draft, then upgrade it on draft night to get our desired player (what Port did with us last year). Could cost quite a bit....

afl.priddis saying Naitanui set to sign a two year extension. Madness. Surely it’s gotta be one year deals at this point
It is technically a one year deal if he plays 11 games each year. Then the big man makes way for l Tim English

You have seen the out of contract list for 2023? plus add 3 almost certain retirements in Shuey, Redden and Hurn (assuming they all go on).

Not sure JJ would be cut ahead of about 9-10 players regardless, so may as well give him the extra year that his form in 2022 warrants.

Hurn was an almost certain retirement this year yet here we are, he is still going..

Fact is he is a fringe player who halfway through the year was borderline gone, found a new lease of life playing off half back where he added run but cant defend and turns the ball over way to much…

No one is going to be coming for him so one year with an option of a second if he improves further is a no brainer..

As it is he now has a second year no matter what happens.

If Junior wants to leave its better now when he has currency than in 2 years when his value drops.

The bloke is always a stress. Could get done for possession tomorrow.

If we can cash in on his obvious talent then we should.

Go the rebuild. If a few teams are interested we should be able to weasel something juicy and cash in.

Despite the sentiment I expressed above I can see the rationality of your position. I think a pick in the mid twenties would be about right.

I have no evidence of this but I wonder if the club didn’t low ball him with the contract they offered, hoping they could get a return when his value is high. There were hints in media reports that not all the other players were enamoured with him. I remember Josh Kennedy saying how angry he was when the bomb dropped before the 2019 semi final against Geelong. We don’t really know what is happening behind the scenes.

He'll get dropped for Rayner next week.
I've been interested in getting him home but not any more after that game. Great intensity but he doesn't do enough. I think he's more of a Hutchings type. He'll be dropped this week for Raynor, and will have Ashcroft as well ahead of him next year.

I'd wait another year or pass all together.

See I disagree, but I can see why you’d think that. I live in Brisbane and go to most games and any time Dev has played, he goes into the midfield for 25% of the game, shows a bit, and then is pushed forward to not do as much.

Last night he was given Jarryd Lyons’ role and looked more than comfortable in that space. He has more toe than Hutchings ever did and is clean by hand.

Popular guy at the club, and I would want him wearing the wings. I reckon he’d be a perfect fit age-wise. Happy to cough up one of our 20s for him. With Ashcroft and Fletcher coming in, the logjam of midfielders is only getting worse at Brisbane.

You mean wait in case he comes good? And then pay peak price?

Buy high, sell low.

Geez you are consistently negative.

I dont think we will have problems in 12 months finding retirees and other to move on.

Hows it negative?its good list management.. if he starts next year well he gets his second year but now we are locked into it either way.

All this talk about not trusting our S&C to fix Wardlaws hamstrings is a bit silly. It's a theme everyone on here has latched onto and Wardlaw gets dismissed as a draft option. It feels like it diminishes the conversation.

If they hammies are fixable, the club will fix em or find a specialist who can.

If Wardlaw is a clear pick at #2, I can't see ROB hesitating because "ooh, I just don't trust our clubs medicos".
A few points

1. Our S&C team have been questionable for some time not just this year
2. Individual clubs are not allowed to do seperate medicals on draftees prior to the draft.
3. Wardlaw has missed a lot of football in the last 3 years. Two of the years are not his doing. In 2022, he has not been great on 2 important ability requirements- availability and reliability
4. Having taken an injury prone Chesser and not had him this year, I suggest our list team will be nervous to take another injury prone top pick 2 years in a row
5. He is not in my mind a stand out number 2 pick - we will be able to match up a strong inside mid at 20 to go with whoever we pick.

It might feel like an Andrew Brayshaw pick but I’d be ok with Jye Clark at 2.

All fair points.
All I'm saying is "I don't trust our S&C" shouldn't be mindlessly parroted.

Playing Devils Advocate -

1. Our S&C team have been questionable for some time not just this year (This department is now under review and will be revamped it has been said publicly and by Bond, hasn't it?)

2. Individual clubs are not allowed to do seperate medicals on draftees prior to the draft. (Why not- Bloody stupid!)

3. Wardlaw has missed a lot of football in the last 3 years. Two of the years are not his doing. In 2022, he has not been great on 2 important ability requirements- availability and reliability (as you said, two years aren't his doing. I'm not so worried. Flipping it, he could have an even higher ceiling because of this too)

4. Having taken an injury prone Chesser and not had him this year, I suggest our list team will be nervous to take another injury prone top pick 2 years in a row (Chesser was very unlucky with his ankle. Could be a blessing in disguise for his meniscus. )

5. He is not in my mind a stand out number 2 pick - we will be able to match up a strong inside mid at 20 to go with whoever we pick. (Injuries aside, he's arguably #1. A dynamic inside mid who can go forward. Exactly what we need. I say take the punt.

It might feel like an Andrew Brayshaw pick but I’d be ok with Jye Clark at 2. (I'd much rather us split the pick if this is the case, get two for one at this level)

All good, I have read that the club has matched Ports offer but the WC ofer oincludes a lot of non dollar conditions (very wisely i would think). Perhaps it the club is smarter than many give them credit. Perhaps the Junior team dont like the conditions and thats the issue. He is also at an age and has the right profile where we should look to move him on for the right price to help building investments.
