I think the first 10 are looking like

GWS - Cadman
North - Wardlaw
North - Sheezel
Essendon - Phillipou
Gold Coast - Humphrey
Hawthorn - Tsastas
Geelong - Clark
West Coast - Ginbey
St Kilda - Mackenzie
Carlton - Busslinger

With rumours of Collingwood trying to get up the order offering pick 16 and multiple 2nds for someone, not sure who though.
I suspect this to be either Clark or Tsatas

I see it as:
GWS - Cadman
Brisbane - Ashcroft
North - Wardlaw
North - Sheezel
Essendon - Phillipou
Gold Coast - Ginbey
Hawthorn - Mackenzie
Geelong - Busslinger
West Coast - Clark
St Kilda - Tsatas
Carlton - Humphrey
Bulldogs - Hayes
West Coast - Allan
Melbourne - Jefferson
Sydney - Hollands
GWS - Weddle
Collingwood - Cowan
Sydney - Hotton
GWS - Clarke
GWS - Konstanty
Eagles - Hewett

I expect Briasbane to land Flectcher somewhere between 10-20 but no idea where. I also expect we'll get some calls draft night, I think there'll be some urgency to land players between us and the Carlton pick before a perceived drop off in talent.

I just can't see Hewett falling to pick 23. We take him at 13 and let Allen drop. If he is there great, if not oh well.

Needs
8 Clark/McKenzie
12 Hewett.

Take a risk
20 26 Next best or speculative

Humphrey won’t last to 10 I don’t think. If Essendon don’t pick him Gold Coast will. I agree we’ll end up with either Ginbey or Clark though just from reading all of the gossip on this website and beyond.

Interesting read on Matt Burgan’s phantom from 2007. He was Cal Twomey’s predecessor.

We took Masten at 3, Selwood at 13 (Ebert was gone), Addam Maric at 20 (Notte was gone) and Dawson Simpson 😬

He got the top 9 largely right, except Palmer and Myers at 6 and 7 swapped spots. Adelaide picking Ebert and not Danger at 10 was the first real miss.

Harry Taylor went 21. Rance 11, Dangerfield 14, Cyril 15.

I think it’s near on pointless guessing who clubs will take and the uncertainty around the selections after North confirms the clubs view that it’s a very even draft through those first dozen picks

Phillipou, Tsatas, Ginbey, Busslinger, Clark, Mackenzie and Humphrey are being linked any from Essendon at 4 to our pick at 12. To a lesser extent add Hollands and Hewett to that mix with Allan more recently being mentioned as well

Very easy to see why we traded out from 2 to 8 and 12

I find it hard to believe myself, but Masten (yes, the same resident "defensive winger" that guarded space and didn't tackle, played outside and was a time trial king) was drafted as inside midfielder. It makes me chuckle to even read that, but bizzarely, its true

I can only hypothesize that he was one of those kids that grew very early and stopped, because by the time he got to the AFL he was getting knocked off the ball by a stiff breeze and couldn't stick a tackle if he was coated in super glue
He was building to something special, 2015?, until the biting incident and then regressed and completely plateaued after that. Never the same player.

Gets way to shit canned for my liking.

We were 2 though, not 4-12.....
I still think Wardlaw is above those listed. I reckon we should've given him a shot and then hoped for one of Hewett/Alan to be there at 20.

Saying that, I'd still be happy with 2 of any combination of the players you have listed.

So with a week to go, I am reading the intelligence as to who is tipped to go where are who might be off the board prior to our picks. It tells me that the reporters will be less accurate with their predictions this year.

What I would like if for the Pieman to have temptation removed. What does that mean? Ginbey goes to the Suns and Cats call out Busslinger. While both could end up at West Coast, I would like them to be off the board prior to our pick. Likewise with Humphrey - a possibility at Hawk or Dons.

At 8, I am hoping that one of Mackenzie or Clark are available (probably in that order). Pull the trigger please.
Then at 12, I am expecting Hollands to be there and that would be perfect pairing.

I would then run the risk that Hewett slides through to 20. If he is gone, I would be happy with one of Allan, Hotton, Hayes, Clarke or Konstanty.

Then at 26, I would be very happy with Kaleb Smith or one of the abovementioned if they were still there.

At a late pick, I would be happy to go a tall and pick van Es (not likely unless we trade a future R4) or Foster who will probably be there as a rookie (not to ruck but as a KPP). With our other rookie, I would like Cleaver. Good chance to get the brother prior to getting his sister. He is also well worth the pick. Theat would leave a final spot that we could hold on for train on, or re-rookie, or take go Broadbent

With our NGA prospects, hope that Dewar and Baker get to be Cat B ( I am still not 100% clear on the process) meaning we get 2 more rookies. If we have to take Dewar on the rookie list, then do so. I suspect Baker will be a free Cat B hit.

That would bring our list size to 44 with the 2 Cat B.

With Mackenzie and Hollands, I think they will be best placed to settle and to be long term starting midfielders. Hollands may even get a gig on the wing in 2023 as his endurance is already there. They compliment Culley, Hough and Chesser.

So to recap:
Balanced mids with our first 2 in Makenzie and Hollands
Pick 20 leaves us options for best available
Pick 26 gets a running half back with great football IQ

Leave the ruck until 2023 unless we believe Broadbent is worth it.

Geelong has its eye firmly on Notte. He is highly rated among the recruiting fraternity, with one believing he has the potential to be the best player from this draft. It would be an interesting scenario if Patrick Dangerfield fell, as he had been earmarked at No.17 until he kept climbing up the order. Scott Selwood also seems unlikely to last until this pick. Don't discount Notte for Sydney (No.11) or Melbourne (No.14). West Coast is also keen but would have to claim him at No.13 – he won't last to No.20 or No.22 now.

EAD Geelong

What a haul. Best player in the 2007 draft in Notte, followed by the best 16 year old of all time (at least until Brander in 2017) in Tom Swift the following year.

We already have restraint of trade with Restricted and unrestricted free agency.

The AFL should introduce a sliding scale as suggested for new draftees AND eliminate free agency all together. Players are bypassing free agency b4 there accrued time anyway.

So clubs at least have 3-4 yrs to impress upon the draftee to stay.longer.

How is free agency a restriction of trade?

People just need to get their heads around the rights of the individual are more important than the club.

Human rights are valued ahead of corporate greed and success.ie. clubs.

Players do a hell of alot of work to get drafted. They earn the right to get drafted. And then its up to the club to retain them.

And if a player leaves the club gets compensated with a trade.

The system works fine 95% ofthe time.

Evenly not as good as 1-4?? The odds are against us

And the players from 1 to 4 very, very likely wouldnt have worked out for the Eagles.

You keep ignoring that.

It would have been an incredible risk to keep and use pick 3 on a player who didnt want to relocate.

It would have been plain dumb to keep pick 3 and use it reaching for a quality player when similar quality would still be there at 9 and even 12.

Who would you have picked with 3?

Instead of Wardlaw we get 2 of those listed and to me that’s the attraction

It’s been well documented that we have very few decent players under 22 on our list so getting two players rather than one makes sense. Especially when you consider the 2 aren’t that far behind Wardlaw and there were legitimate concerns on Wardlaw (hamstrings and flight risk)

This year it made sense when in other years I don’t think it would have

I cannot see the Pieman passing on Buslinger if he is still on the board

And i am not for one minute suggesting that Buslinger can't play. He can

But for what we need (midfielders) it would be a mistake and another failure to identify where we truly deficient
