Not saying this will be our best 22 in round 1 but by midway through the season I’d hope to see something like this

Cole, Barrass, Hurn

Duggan, McGovern, Hunt

Chesser, Yeo, Gaff

Hewett, Darling, Cripps

Ryan, Allen, B.Williams

Nic, Shuey, Kelly

Burgiel, Hough, Bazzo, Ginbey

Culley?

WEST COAST

9: Reuben Ginbey (89cm, 82kg, Mid, East Perth. Junior club: Dunsborough)

14: Elijah Hewett (185cm, 84kg, Fwd/Mid, Swan Districts. Junior club: Caversham)

23: Harry Barnett (202cm, 96kg, Ruck, West Adelaide. Junior club: Goodwood)

29: Coby Burgiel (183cm, 80kg, Mid/Fwd, Gippsland Power. Junior club: Maffra)

58: Noah Long (178cm, 74kg, Fwd, Bendigo Pioneers. Junior club: Echuca)

SIMEON THOMAS-WILSON’S VERDICT: The Eagles have kick-started their rebuild strongly with four top-30 selections. Rueben Ginbey will quickly find a spot in the Eagles midfield while Elijah Hewett has plenty of upside although there were some behavioural issues that concerned clubs. They then started the second round by nabbing the best ruckman in the pool in Harry Barnett, while Coby Burgiel satisfies the need for speed at the Eagles.

Hey, **** you Simeon you dumb campaigner

Gotta love that predraft, when there was a good chance Hewett might end up at a Victorian club, there was donuts on his rumoured behavioural issues

Now he’s at West Coast it gets a mention all of a sudden

Ginbey is only 89CM tall, I thought he was a big bodied mid???? Pie man strikes again

(I’m sticking this post for now because it’s the best explanation of this draft for us that I’ve read anywhere and everyone should read it at least once - Keys)

How’d we do?

Our off season

Started with draft picks 2, 20, 26, 38, 74 before compensation, FA and bidding shenanigans

Departures :

Traded - Rioli
Retired - Kennedy, Redden, Strnadica
Delisted - Nelson, Langdon, Winder, Trew, Joyce, Naish, Dixon

Additions :
DFA - Hunt
Draft - Ginbey (9), Hewett (14), Barnett (23), Burgiel (29), Long (58)
Cat B Rookies - Dewar, Baker (TBC)
Rookie Draft - TBA (2 places left)

Addressed our most pressing need (midfield) with size and/or pace
Addressed a medium term need with the best ruck in the draft
Replaced a departing small forward
Brought in two development players for free

Added a F2 and F3 draft pick (tied to Port) whilst retaining all our future picks

No ******* about. No overthinking

Well done to the recruiting team

How’d we do?
I believe we aced it and the Pieman has got massive credits in the bank.

What did we need? A complement of mids that have high impact, preferably balanced, potentially goal kicking and not mummy's boys.

Pre Draft
Splitting the pick was brilliantly reading the draft this year. Well done.

Day 1
The pairing on of Hewett and Ginbey certainly exceeded what I think we would of got with just one of Tsatas or Sheezel. I think Ginbey will make it as a mid at AFL, he will at worst be a good HBF. He has great burst, good speed and a tough nut. Hewett has been on my wish list since he demolished my Claremont Colts in 2021. I am sure he will prosper in an AFL environment and bring the balanced bull we have not taken since Shuey.

Day 2
The highlight for me was Burgiel. I expected the Pieman got a tall and whether it was Hayes or Barnett, I was happy. Long as a small forward is a good late pick. In addition we get as outside the cap Dewar and Baker. Barnett is the best ruck by a long way in this year's draft and he wil lplay the pure ruck role unlike Williams and Jamieson who look more like a second ruck. Burgiel I had as earlier than we took him and I was thinking he might be our first balanced mid. A country boy from Maffra and was always leaving home. Smooth mover, quick, makes good decisions and uses his pace to advantage. The trio of mids really do complement each other. Long looks a good prospect. He is quick, clean with hands, reads the ball off the contest and looks for options. I particularly like the pairing of the 2 Vic Country players who offer skills we lack - the ability to kick goals at Kardinia Park.

I believe at each pick, we let the draft come to us and resisted reaching.

Marks out of 10 for draft and Trade. I would go so far as to say this is the happiest I have been in over a decade and the Pieman gets a 10/10.

Here is my summary. I have added Jack Cleaver as the running half back as to who I want on day 3 (could also have been Gibney) and then leave the final spot for a train contender. Whether that be a draft prospect, Narkle, Winder or Trew. It allows us a chance to see what they have to offer.

Real happy with that effort from the recruitment team.
I must admit I was not happy at all when they traded pick 2 for what looked unders (still think it was unders to be fair when history will technically show ashcroft as pick 2...).

I had absolutely no faith in the recruitment team to chase some midfielder but they've delivered.

Burgiel at 29 looks a steal.
Hewett with our 2nd pick was a gutsy move that ruffled a few feathers.

But the honours have to go to Sydney for mine.
At Pick 16 they triggered 2x father son picks.... then traded the pick... that's how you do it!! GWS should have done it with pick1.

Here is my age by position with the new draftees (I took the liberty of including Cleaver (or Gilbey) and there is a train on place that will be open or we take a second rookie on Wednesday.

So after a decade in the midfield drafting wilderness, the Pieman has delivered.

This list is starting to look much better. Add to that 3 in the top end next year and we start rising up the ladder. The talent is looking like we are gathering for a flag 5.

Small forward and tall was what I wanted today and we got that plus a speedy mid/hbf.

Really happy with Barnett. A mobile marking ruckman who is good around the ground. Looks a bit like the last South Australian ruckman we drafted in the 20’s.
Burgiel adds pace and class. Not sure where he plays? He said he’s best position is back flank/mid.
Noah Long was a bit of a nice surprise. Highlights look good. A hardworking mid/fwd who is good around goals. I was sure we were going to pass.

Happy with the selections. I know I whinged about splitting the pick but I can’t be unhappy with that haul, well done Eagles.

Are Dewar and Baker confirmed as Cat B rookies yet? Or can any club still rookie them before we get that opportunity?

Yeah very much reminds me of Lycett but seems more agile and loves a contested grab

Perhaps in a year or two. You don't just throw them to the wolves ala Melbourne in their Dean Bailey years.
I think they'll all get their opportunities, not at the same time of course. I expect TK and Sheed to start in there, maybe it is with Shuey but keep in mind how much time Culley spent in there after next to no game time at all. There's only so many of them you can fit on a half forward flank.

Hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. I believe eligible rookies get prelisted tonight (should have been done by now) ahead of tomorrow’s rookie draft

So provided we’ve done the paperwork correctly they’re our players and aren’t available to other clubs
